  4. 40 ON JAKE
  5.  
  6.     as his pace intensifies... he has to get out of here, 
  7.     it's all he can think about. He scrambles up a hill in 
  8.     front of him, panting and out of breath, he reaches the 
  9.     top, only to realize too late that the drop on the 
  10.     other side is steeper than he thinks... his momentum 
  11.     carries him forward, and he goes tumbling down the hill 
  12.     into --
  13.  
  14. 41 EXT. A DITCH
  15.  
  16.     as Jake skids down it and suddenly collides with 
  17.     another body that we barely see... there's a glint of 
  18.     steel, then a RIFLE BUTT swings into view and connects 
  19.     with Jake's head... the impact of the blow sends Jake 
  20.     sprawling into the dirt -- he lies there, stunned and 
  21.     out of breath...

  23. 42 NEW ANGLE
  24.  
  25.     For the first time we see Jake's assailant, a badly 
  26.     wounded Starfleet Lieutenant, his uniform soaked with 
  27.     blood -- he's BURKE, a seasoned combat veteran of 
  28.     about forty.
  29.  
  30.     He's lying on his side, the phaser rifle nearby, a 
  31.     terrible wound in his abdomen completely debilitating 
  32.     him -- hitting Jake with the rifle has left him lying 
  33.     helpless, unable to move...
  34.  
  35.     For a moment, all either of them can do is lie there in 
  36.     the dirt and stare at the other man. We see them 
  37.     realize that the other is not the enemy, and they both 
  38.     lie there, fighting for breath. The shelling in the 
  39.     distance has stopped.
  40.  
  41.                     BURKE
  42.                 (through the pain)
  43.             Medkit...
  44.  
  45.     Jake doesn't respond, still too disoriented, still 
  46.     stunned by the blow to his head...
  47.  
  48.                     BURKE 
  49.             Over there...
  50.  
  51.     He does his best to point toward a MEDKIT lying on the 
  52.     ground a few yards away. When Jake doesn't react, he 
  53.     orders him through clenched teeth --
  54.  
  55.                     BURKE
  56.             Now.
