  14.             Not much to show for a life's  
  15.             work, is it? I'm going to get us  
  16.             some tea.

  18.                     MELANIE  
  19.             I savored those stories, read them  
  20.             slowly, one each day. And when I  
  21.             was finished, I wished I hadn't  
  22.             read them at all.

  24.     Jake looks at her quizzically. Melanie realizes how  
  25.     that must have sounded and quickly explains herself.

  28.             So that I could read them again...  
  29.             like it was the first time.

  31.     Jake smiles, nods that he understands. As he sits down 
  32.     with the tray...

  35.             There's only one "first time" for  
  36.             everything, isn't there?

  38.             And only one last time, too. You  
  39.             think about that when you get to  
  40.             be my age. That today might be  
  41.             the last time you... sit in a  
  42.             favorite chair... watch the rain  
  43.             fall... enjoy a cup of tea.

  45.     Melanie looks at him, then cautiously asks the question 
  46.     that brought her here.
