- Grey: Howdy, Mayonez!
-
- Mayonez: Hi Grey!
-
- Grey: Yea', I am so f*ckin' pleased to catch ya finally! It's time to show
- your pants to our readers! Just do your best to dig out all memories
- and secrets from your scene-life :) scared already? :)
-
- Mayonez: NO!!! I'm not scared:) This is a big honour for me!
-
- Grey: Eh... it won't hurt anyway. C'mon, let's start with serious stuff.
- How many candles did you blow out on your last birthday cake? :) And
- what are you doing outside of your scene-life?
-
- Mayonez: Hmm..., On the 22nd of September I started the 28th year of my life..
- Extremely old, yeah? My non-scene life interests and work are not
- really connected to computers. It is.. biology (ecology) science.
- I'm doing my doctoral work about caddis-flies (Trichoptera) :). They
- are insects - larvae that live in the water and build cases made of
- wood, sand and leaves. I take some lessons with students also - just
- like a university lecturer.
-
- Grey: Try to search in your memory for your first "touch" with Atari
- machines. When and where was it?
-
- Mayonez: Hmm... It was in 1991, I think. My colleagues and I decided to buy
- an Atari, one of them bought an Atari first, this was my "first
- contact". Some months later I bought my Atari (It was in September
- 1991, I think).
-
- Grey: Any funny memories concerning these days?
-
- Mayonez: Funny...hmm...They were nice memories, for sure... Playing on Atari
- with only a tape-recorder and a tiny black and white TV... Waiting
- for games to load... staring at the tape counter... First some basic
- programs rewritten from "Bajtek" magazine, then my own basic
- programs, and... finally... my first 'big' code written using Quick
- Assembler!
-
- Grey: At the end of the 80s many gamers decided to exchange their Atari for
- C64... why did you decide to stay with Atari? In hindsight your
- decision was justified as later Atari grew in power, but you couldn't
- know it at that time :)
-
- Mayonez: As I told you before, my colleagues and I decided to buy Atari, but
- only I stayed... Atari is better comp. For programmers, I'm not a
- gamer, so more games for C64 was not what I was looking for...
-
- Grey: Ok, let's get back to so called scene-affairs :) How did you know
- that something like the demo-scene exists at all?
-
- Mayonez: There were some famous demos at the time of old-school scene - The
- Top series, etc... But I discovered the "real" scene in 1995...
-
- Grey: And how did You manage to get in touch with the scene-community? Your
- first activities?
-
- Mayonez: As I've said, it was in 1995, before the Quast '95 Party. It was
- before COBRA. Rav, Chris, Fatman and I were at BQL (BECUEL). Chris
- swapped with Slight Team, so then we could see what the Atari scene
- looked like. My first scene activity was with general music stuff.
-
- Grey: Who was a founder of "COBRA"? Could you write us at least short
- description of each member and his function in the group?
-
- Mayonez: It was 1996, 3rd September, I think... Chris, Macgyver, Winio & I
- decided to start COBRA. Chris was a swapper, Mac, Winio and I -
- coders. I was also a musican. We didn't have a gfx-man back then.
- Some time later Vulgar joined. After creating COBRA, Eros joined.
- On the 8 bit side, we also have BLB in COBRA (8 bit coder). Hermes
- (8 bit swapper), Wodz and Kuchara (8 bit coders) were members of
- COBRA, too.
-
- Grey: It would be so cool if you could name all your 8-bit Atari releases.
- I know that your group was quite active on this scene in the past...
-
- Mayonez: It is very hard to recall them all... Some utilities... to convert or
- view pictures (like INT CONVERTER, INT VIEWER, etc.) or famous Mac's
- MEGAPLAYER... One partro.. nothing special.. And a lots of my music..
- Almost no effects or demos...
-
- Grey: And at some point, the famous Mayonez rather surprisingly became a
- lucky (at least I hope so!) user of the humble ST... :) Was it proof
- of your dedication to Atari machines? This was quite an unexpected
- move esp. 'coz many 8-bit Atarians moved to Amiga or PeeZee trash...
-
- Mayonez: Yes, I bought an STE at Quast '97...It broke down a year later, and I
- lent one from Chris. I've written some code using Winio's Falcon
- before. I was never going to buy an Amiga... I've always coded on
- Atari and decided to continue.
-
- Grey: BTW - So lets touch on this topic... do you think that many ppl from
- 8-bit Atari seemed to show something like an aversion to ST machines?
- "Anything but an ST"?
-
- Mayonez: Yes, I think so, but I don't know why... I liked the ST very much :)
-
- Grey: In fact there were some ppl who countered this situation, e.g. a
- well-known 8-bit Atari crew called "SLIGHT". Seban, their main coder
- was willing to do something on this machine, as well as a God of
- 8-bit Atari coding - Konop from "SHADOWS"... both were ST users as
- well. But shit happened and nothing saw the light of the day... :(
-
- Mayonez: You know... Sometimes it is hard to break the ice. There are some
- problems when changing platforms. Maybe they didn't like this, or
- just didn't enjoy coding on the ST at all.
-
- Grey: What was your first thought when you heard that Shadows, one of the
- coolest 8-bit Atari crews decided to open Falcon section of their
- crew?
-
- Mayonez: I was very glad that the Falcon was given an opportunity to show its
- abilities, and that we got a chance to see some polish demos on it.
-
- Grey: Shortly after that, "Cobra" decided to follow "Shadows" step and
- opened a Falcon section as well... :) Not to mention "Pandemonium"
- (ex-High Voltage) and Excellent team (ex Pentagram) who also followed
- suit. Was this the result a fascination of the Falcon's possibilites?
- What do you think about this machine in general?
-
- Mayonez: Great machine for coding... The features that the ST does not have -
- truecolor, faster proc... But the Falcon was/is not well developed :(
- sad....
-
- Grey: We were the witnesses of Falcon scene's birthday in Poland. Esp. at
- QuaST '97 where 3 Falcon releases were shown to the public (contribs
- by Shadows, Cobra and Pandemonium). One of the contribs was the
- "Insanity" intro coded by you in co-operation with MacGyver.
- Considering this was your 1st attempt in Falcon asm this intro was
- astonishing!
-
- Mayonez: Oh no! Do not exaggerate! But at the time I was really proud of this
- intro, really. I was surprised that it was so easy to start 16-bit
- coding. I was expecting more problems!
-
- Grey: A short time later a rumour spread that "Cobra" was working on their
- first multi-part demo for the ST. At the beginning it was gonna be
- called "Silent Breaker", finally you decided to change it to
- "Awaken". Many effects were done but... eh... sorry to say this but
- you seem to be a very UNLUCKY FELLOW! You lost your sources at least
- two times - at the QuaST '98 where you attempted to code an ST intro/
- demo and a 2nd time at EIL'99 where only a preview was shown! After
- the party only a few effects were rescued after another HDD crash. :(
-
- Mayonez: Hmm.. It was a hard period... We had devoted lots of work to
- "Revertant". Some parts of its 3d engine were coded by me on ST, it
- worked on it. I was going to use it in "Awaken". I lost some sources
- (not all of them).
-
- Grey: Mate, did You ever hear about something called "backup"?! arf! I've
- been busy awaiting your ST demo and this news simply destroyed me!
- HOW COULD YOU DO THAT?! HOW COULD YOU! HOW!! :)
-
- Mayonez: Yes, I did :) But it was not such a big loss, because.. the sources
- had to be rewritten: the 3d engine could be faster. I was going to
- completley rewrite the 3d-texturing, too. There was no time and
- motivation to do that.
-
- Grey: Without any doubt the scene lost a chance to see another great ST
- demo released by a very promising polish coder. Hopefully it seems
- that you are again motivated to do things on the ST! That's REALLY
- great news! We were talking about it on one of the atari forums and
- you said it's maybe possible to see COBRA's ST demo at SV2+4!!! :)
-
- Mayonez: Yes, I wasn't motivated, but now I am, after Quast 2003. I haven't
- much time, but I will try to code all the stuff again. Maybe I will
- have to buy an ST, the emulator approach is not always suitable.
-
- Grey: Good luck in coding then!! I am so glad that you didn't announce your
- last words in ST coding :) Just can't wait to see your ST release!
-
- ST LIVES!
-
- Now feel free to use the few lines below for your own use!
- Greet someone, send some slaggins... whatever!
-
- Mayonez: Greets to all Atarians!!!
