  10. This is the NEWOPUS Echo. It exists to offer assistance to Sysops who have
  11. recently made the transition to Opus CBCS either from some other BBS
  12. software or from that dreaded plane -- from scratch [Arrrgghh!]. [grin]
  13.  
  14. It also offers information to advanced Users who are considering taking the
  15. plunge into running their own BBS so they can make their own rules.
  16.  
  17. The current version of Opus is 1.7+. That is the version most often dealt
  18. with in this Echo. However, we have plenty of oldtimers who might remember a
  19. thing or two about the previous versions if you happen to be starting from
  20. one.
  21.  
  22. This Echo is for Sysops and Users!
  23.  
  24. Anything related to starting, running and maintaining an Opus based system
  25. is on-topic here. If you want to ask questions about other BBS programs
  26. you'll need to find a specific Echo for those elsewhere. You can get limited
  27. answers to front-end mailer [like BinkleyTerm, and others] questions
  28. depending on who is reading here at any given time. Those questions that
  29. deal with interfacing with an Opus setup will be considered on-topic as well
  30. but if you need detailed information on front-end mailers, check the ELIST
  31. [master list of Echos] or ask your NEC [Net Echo Coordinator] about specific
  32. Echos for your particular mailer.

  34. That's what we do here. The following list of specific Echo rules are lifted
  35. directly from the MEADOW Echo [thanks, Bev!] where the veteran Opus Sysops
  36. hang out and deal with new and future Opus stuff.
  37.  
  38. RULES:  In addition to general rules for any conference, NewOpus rules are
  39. simple, standard, and may be bent a little, but not trashed.  The NewOpus
  40. "spirit" is one of cooperation.  And remember: Guido is watching. [you'll
  41. find out about him in the MEADOW.]
  42.  
  43. 1.  Keep your messages on-topic --
  44.     On occasion, the Moderator may get the feeling that message content
  45.     is inappropriate or has the potential to attract a barrage of
  46.     inappropriate messages.  In such instances, the Moderator will post
  47.     a reminder of the rules or send netmail.  It's not personal.  If
  48.     you post an off-topic message, let it be for comic relief and the
  49.     fostering of friendships.

  51. 2.  Be excellent to one another and keep your sense of humor --
  52.     Personal attacks (thinly disguised or not) are prohibited.  The
  53.     useful exchange of information requires you to accept that people
  54.     have opinions or experiences which contrast yours.  The object of
  55.     this conference is to learn from others, not argue with them.

  57. 3.  Be helpful --
  58.     If you can help someone with a technical problem, PLEASE do, but
  59.     avoid blind guesses.  You'd be doing a disservice.  If you're not
  60.     certain of a proper response, wait a few days to see if someone out
  61.     there has the definitive answer.  Then everyone learns something.

  63. 4.  Never use NewOpus to reply to inappropriate messages --
  64.     If you feel a message is inappropriate, simply take a deep breath and
  65.     ignore it.  It'll go away.  And if it doesn't, LET THE MODERATOR
  66.     HANDLE THE PROBLEM.  If you feel particularly strong about a specific
  67.     posting, send the Moderator private netmail, or take your beef
  68.     off-echo and flame the person directly.  Leave the others out of it.
  69.     The Moderator has probably already addressed the problem via netmail.

  71. 5.  Keep your quotes to a minimum --
  72.     People read NewOpus regularly; you don't need to quote and explain
  73.     the obvious.  If you get a bad case of quotitis, the Moderator will
  74.     come over to administer something you hated as a kid.
  75.  
  76. 6.  Keep your messages public and without nuisances such as encryption,
  77.     encoding, or rotation --
  78.     If you have a driving need to send a private or fancy message,
  79.     there's something intriguing out there called netmail.  Use it.
  80.  
  81. 7.  Keep to a minimum BBS ads and notices on new conferences or toys --
  82.     Such advertisements and so on should be restricted to no more than
  83.     ONCE per month.  We hear ya, already.
  84.  
  85. 8.  Running a barefoot Opus is not the same as running Opus bare.
  86.  
  87. HANDLES:  While not encouraged, "handles" or anonymous names are permitted
  88. provided they are not used with the intent to conceal the identity of a
  89. person posting malicious, annoying, or illegal messages.  Please include
  90. your proper name someplace on every message.
  91.  
  92. NONCOMPLIANCE:  If you cannot abide by and comply with the rules, you are
  93. requested to forego posting messages to this conference.  Anyone who posts
  94. inappropriate messages will be warned of the infraction.  If such postings
  95. continue, you will be asked to drop the conference.  If you do not drop
  96. the conference voluntarily, the system(s) uproute will be asked to
  97. disconnect your feed.  This method of keeping NewOpus interesting and
  98. productive is not preferred.  It is preferable that participants simply
  99. abide by the rules and "spirit" of the conference, and that they serve
  100. one another.

  102. That's it. Remember that as an Opus Sysop, you pledge to avoid becoming
  103. serious [you did read the docs, yes?]. You can be serious about Opus so long
  104. as you don't become serious. [grin]
  105.  
  106. Take the WOC pledge and welcome. Above all, enjoy your new adventure with a
  107. continually evolving software legend!
