  6.    Compressed files are commonly used on BBS's to reduce the space required
  7.    to store the file thereby reducing the transmission time.  In addition,
  8.    it allows you to save complete programs containing multiple files into a
  9.    simple and easy to manage single file.  The two main problems associated
  10.    with these files are knowing what they contain, and in their present form,
  11.    are not usable, thus requiring an additional utility to restore them to
  12.    their original form.

  14.    Selecting this option allows you to "look inside" the selected file.  From
  15.    here, you can choose a variety of options ranging from reading the contents
  16.    of embedded ASCII text files to marking specific embedded files for
  17.    download.

  19.    Please note, selecting this option allows you to view the contents of a
  20.    SINGLE compressed file (commonly referred to as an archived file).  If you
  21.    would like to view the contents of any additional compressed files, you
  22.    must exit this program and return to the file listing presented by the BBS
  23.    and reselect a new file.

  25.    Shown below is a sample display using the file BOBST12.ZIP.

  41.    Shown above is a listing of the files contained with the compressed file
  42.    called BOBST12.ZIP.  Below is a description of the available commands.
  43.  
  44.        [filename] -
  45.             This option allows you to enter in the EXACT filename of the
  46.             ASCII text file you wish to read the contents of.  This is useful
  47.             for reading the contents of .DOC, .TXT, READ.ME and various other
  48.             text type files.  If a binary file has been selected, such as a
  49.             .EXE, .COM etc, the system will inform you its not an ASCII file
  50.             and will not display it.  Between each screenful of information,
  51.             you're presented with the following sub-prompt:

  53. More - [Y]es, [N]o, [C]ontinuous, [B]ack, [H]ome, [E]nd, [S]earch, [J]ump?

  55.             Below is a description of these options.
  56.  
  57.                  [Y]es -
  58.                      This will display another screenful of information from
  59.                      the selected file.
  60.  
  61.                  [N]o -
  62.                      When selected, this will abort the read mode and return
  63.                      to the main prompt.
  64.  
  65.                  [C]ontinuous -
  66.                      This option will display the remaining contents of the
  67.                      file in nonstop mode.  If you select this option and
  68.                      wish to abort the continuous mode, you may do this by
  69.                      pressing the [SPACEBAR].  As a matter of fact, pressing
  70.                      the [SPACEBAR] anywhere will abort whatever is being
  71.                      displayed at the time and return you to the main prompt.
  72.  
  73.                  [B]ack -
  74.                      This will move backwards in the file by one page length.
  75.                      The page length is the number of lines per page you have
  76.                      set in your user defaults.  Typically it is 23 lines.

  78.                  [H]ome -
  79.                      Moves back to the beginning of the file.
  80.  
  81.                  [E]nd -
  82.                      Moves to the end of the file.
  83.  
  84.                  [S]earch -
  85.                      Searches the file for a text string.  The search begins
  86.                      from the last line displayed.  The first line in which
  87.                      the string is found is displayed followed by the next
  88.                      screenful of lines.

  90.                   [J]ump -
  91.                      Moves to a specified line number.
  92.  
  93.         [#] to read -
  94.             This option performs exactly the same as the [filename] option
  95.             listed above except instead of entering in the filename manually,
  96.             you simply select the number to the immediate left of the desired
  97.             file.

  99.         [D]ownload -
  100.             Selecting this option allows you to choose specific files listed
  101.             in the current archive for downloading.  This can be useful when
  102.             you only need one or two files, thus saving you download time by
  103.             not transferring the entire compressed file.  Selecting this
  104.             option presents the following sub-prompt.

  106. Enter [filename] or [#] to DownLoad, [M]arked, [A]rchive, [Return] to quit?

  108.             Shown below is a description of the available options.
  109.  
  110.                 [filename] -
  111.                      To select only this file for download, you must enter
  112.                      the complete filename as displayed via the [L]ist or
  113.                      [V]iew commands.  You will then be asked if you wish
  114.                      to have the file compressed.  If you say "No", then no
  115.                      compression will be performed on the selected file prior
  116.                      to downloading.  It will be transmitted in its original
  117.                      size.  If you say "Yes", then it will be compressed.

  119.                 [#] -
  120.                      This is the number to the immediate left of the filename
  121.                      used for selecting only this file for download.  Similar
  122.                      to the above command, selecting this method will not
  123.                      perform any compression on the selected file prior to
  124.                      downloading and thus will be transmitted in its original
  125.                      size.

  127.                 [M]arked -
  128.                      This option when chosen, will select those files that
  129.                      have been previously marked for download via the
  130.                      [M]ark files option.
  131.  
  132.                 [A]rchive -
  133.                      This will send the entire archive intact.
  134.  
  135.                 [Return] to quit -
  136.                      This aborts the download process and returns to the
  137.                      main prompt.  Those files that have been previously
  138.                      [M]arked, remain intact.

  141.             If you've chosen files via the [M]ark option, the system will
  142.             then proceed to extract those file(s) from the original archive
  143.             and re-compress them into a new filename similar to AVIEWnnn.???.
  144.             Where nnn refers to the archive number and ??? is the original
  145.             compression format.  At present, this is not a selectable
  146.             compression method, but rather the same method used in the
  147.             original archive.

  149.             After the the desired file(s) have been selected, you are then
  150.             prompted similar to below:

  154.                  [T] MobyTurbo Zmodem  [A] Abort or Protocol?

  156.             From here you can select the desired file transfer protocol to
  157.             send the file to you in, or select [A]bort to return to the
  158.             main prompt.  If for whatever reason the file transfer was NOT
  159.             successful, you will then have the option to resend if desired.

  161.             Please note, that if you've selected files for download via the
  162.             [M]ark option, the file received will be named similar to
  163.             AVIEW000.ZIP or AVIEW001.ZIP and not the original filename.

  166.         [M]ark -
  167.             This option is used to select the desired file by entering in the
  168.             number associated with it displayed to the left of the filename.
  169.             Multiple files may be selected, but only one at a time.  Stacking
  170.             of file numbers is not permitted.  Also, any file(s) selected by
  171.             this method will be automatically compressed prior to downloading
  172.             thereby reducing the overall transfer time.  Selecting this
  173.             option presents the following sub-prompt:
  174.  
  175. Enter [filename] or [#] or [R]ange to Mark, [C]lear, [Return] to quit?
  176.  
  177.             Shown below is a description of the available options.
  178.  
  179.                 [filename] -
  180.                      To mark this file for download, you must enter the
  181.                      complete filename as displayed via the [L]ist or [V]iew
  182.                      commands including the file extensions.
  183.  
  184.                 [#] -
  185.                      This is the number to the immediate left of the filename
  186.                      used for marking this file for download.
  187.  
  188.                 [R]ange -
  189.                      This allows you to enter the numbers of an inclusive
  190.                      range of files you wish to mark.  All files in the range
  191.                      will be marked.  The Start# is the first file to mark,
  192.                      and the End# is the last file to mark.
  193.  
  194.                 [C]lear -
  195.                      This option is used to clear the ENTIRE list of
  196.                      previously [M]arked files.
  197.  
  198.                 [Return] to quit -
  199.                      When selected, this option will abort the file marking
  200.                      process and return to the main prompt.
  201.  
  202.         [V]iew -
  203.              This option is used to redisplay the detailed information on
  204.              selected archive.  This information is often useful when
  205.              searching for a newer release of a spcific program by checking
  206.              the file date and time information.  Additional information is
  207.              displayed regarding the compression percentage, file sizes
  208.              before and after and so on.  Shown below is a sample display.

  221.              This option is used to display general information on the files
  222.              contained in the selected archive.  This is commonly used to
  223.              display which files have been marked for download.  Shown below
  224.              is a sample display.
