  112. B1  The V7SETUP-Logo hardly affects the starting time of Windows!
  113.     The SPEA logo informs you about the installed version of
  114.     the driver - which is important for tech-support - and at the same 
  115.     time it proves that the driver has been correctly loaded!
  116.     Set up a permanent SWAP-file. 
  117.     Defragment  your hard disk regularly (e.g. with Norton 
  118.     SpeedDisk or DEFRAG from DOS).
  119.     Remove all unnecessary entries from the WIN.INI (e.g. unused 
  120.     fonts). 
  121.    
  122. B2  Install (Superdisk) the GDC-Software (Pos.1)!
  123.     Activate (in System BIOS) the SHADOW RAM for the Video BIOS.
  124.  
  125. B3  -Add the following line to SYSTEM.INI under [CAR1K.DRV]: 
  126.      CHIPSYNC=1 
  127.     -For the MIRAGE/MERCURY P64: BASEADDRESS=1 or 2 
  128.      (1 for >= 32MB, 2 for >= 64MB)
  129.     -Decrease the vertical frecuency with the V7SETUP or CLMODE. 
  130.     -For systems with AWARD BIOS 4.50: You`ll find in BIOS, under the 
  131.      option CHIP FAETURES,the point SNOOP AHEAD. Set it to "enabled".
  132.     -AMI System Bios: disable external cache.
  133.     -AWARD System BIOS: install BIOS 4.50G Update Rel. 1404.0103.
  134.      Important: Before installing a Bios update please prepare a backup
  135.      of the hard disk!
  136.     -PCI Bios: set option "CPU to PCI byte merge" or "CPU to PCI burst write"
  137.      to "disabled".
  138.     -EMM386 Option delete the HIGHSCAN (CONFIG.SYS) option. 
  139.      Use EMM386 Version 4.49 from DOS 6.22!
  140.     -Increase the "Files=" option (SYSTEM.INI).     
  141.        
  142. B4  Set - according to the AMI-BIOS setup in your computer -  
  143.     DEQUOPLE REFRESH, REFRESH=HIDDEN , REFRESH=AT-STYLE or REFRESH 
  144.     from "disabled" to "enabled" or vice versa.  
  145.  
  146. B5  If you use EMM386, QEMM, 386MAX etc. then exclude the area of the 
  147.     VGA-BIOS with the parameter X=C000-C7FF (X=C000-CFFF for P64 PCI 
  148.     boards); don┤t use includes in the area A000-BFFF.
  149.  
  150. B6  With the TEST-button you can only test the setting of
  151.     the vertical frecuency in its actual resolution and colour depth. 
  152.     If you change resolution or color depth, the TEST-button will be 
  153.     deactivated.
  154.     For V7-VEGA: There is no TEST-button available. 
  155.     In order to adjust the vertical frecuency, use the program CLMODE.
  156.  
  157. B7  Find in the block [boot] of the file SYSTEM.INI the line  
  158.     DRIVERS=MMSYSTEM.DLL. Delete the entry V7START.DLL.
  159.     Install the current BIGWIN driver (available in the SPEA BBS). 
  160.  
  161. B8  Add the following line to the CONFIG.SYS:
  162.     E.g.  C:\qemm386.sys R1: ST:M RAM x=C000-C7FF
  163.     Use  the memory exclusion X=C000-C7FF also for other cases of
  164.     memory shortage  (EMM386, ...).  Another alternative would be EMM386.
  165.  
  166. B9  Insert the following line: logooff=1  in the block [car1k.drv] of 
  167.     the file SYSTEM.INI.
  168.      
  169. B10 The Programm EFIX can help you against this unpleasant message. 
  170.     (EFIX is available in the BBS)
  171.  
  172. B11 Slow down the bus-clock using the system-BIOS or jumpers on the 
  173.     main-board.
  174.  
  175. B12 Delete (but save it first!) the file IFSHLP.SYS.
  176.  
  177. B13 Use COM 2 for your mouse; load the mouse driver MOUSE.COM additionally.
  178.     Using the Mitsumi mouse driver 6.0 only 256 colors are available 
  179.     under Windows 3.1. 
  180.     Use the actual (Microsoft) mouse driver.
  181.  
  182. B14 Remove - if it exists - the item "Double Buffer" which appears in the
  183.     line SMARTDRIVE in the file CONFIG.SYS. 
  184.  
  185. B15 The driver VideoSeven specified in Windows SETUP cannot be used for the
  186.     graphics-boards from SPEA. It only works with the VideoSeven boards 
  187.     (e.g. URAM11) of the american V7-series.
  188.  
  189. B17 TIP:
  190.     Windows uses two blocks of 64KB each for the administration of the 
  191.     system. These blocks can┤t be accesed nor increased.
  192.     Little free space in these blocks may lead to various problems in 
  193.     Windows. These factors cause shortage of free space in these blocks:
  194.     - high resolutions combined with high colour depth
  195.     - if there are many Import- and Export-filters installed
  196.     - If there is a big amount of installed TrueType- oder PostScript-
  197.       (Adobe) Fonts
  198.     - many windows/icons in the program manager
  199.     - some programs, when ended, do not release the resources they need to 
  200.       run.
  201.  
  202.     Some specific hardware configurations may happen to accentuate these
  203.     problems; but an absolutely smoothly running system is also possible!
  204.      
  205.     According to Microsoft, the solution will come with the release of 
  206.     Windows 4.0 (Chicago). In the new program the resource administration
  207.     will be adapted to the current hardware and software demands!.
  208.     Until then we can only hope that the following tips and solutions may
  209.     be of help in case of lack of resources: 
  210.      
  211.     
  212.     = Install the current Big Win Version (>= 2.1)!
  213.  
  214.     - Keep the resolution and the colourdepth as low as possible or change 
  215.       them according to the main application. 
  216.       The V7-BIGWIN Utility: SPEAVIEW would be helpful here.
  217.     - WIN.INI Files:
  218.       deactivate all unnecessary filters and fonts 
  219.       (e.g.  add a semicolon at the beginning of the line)
  220.     - Check on the use and release of resources of all Windows-applications
  221.       you use. Select, if possible, a lower resolution or colour depth for 
  222.       the display.
  223.     - Close all unnecessary windows in Programm Manager and try to avoid 
  224.       running any utilities when starting Windows 
  225.       (keep the Autostart window empty)                 
  226.  
  227. B18 Close the program SPEAview.
  228.  
  229. B19 Please notice:
  230.     The single user has no longer his own system-directory. 
  231.     Drivers, fonts, grabbers and so on will be loaded from a directory on 
  232.     the server, which has been installed by the administrator of the 
  233.     network. Since this directory as well as the files in it contained are 
  234.     usually write-protected, only the network administrator can install new
  235.     drivers.
  236.  
  237.     - Driver installation for V7-MERCURY und V7-MIRAGE:
  238.     The network administrator copies (unpacks) all the files from the
  239.     Installationsdiskette/s into  the Network-directory from Windows:
  240.     E.g.  x:
  241.           cd\public\windows
  242.           expand a:*.drv
  243.           (expand a:*.fnt)
  244.           expand a:*.386
  245.           expand a:V7*.*
  246.           expand a:s3vga.*
  247.           copy a:V7*.*      
  248.           attrib +r *.*     // protect files against writing
  249.     It is not necessary to copy the remaining files of the installations-
  250.     diskette (e.g. fonts) for they are already available in the 
  251.     network-directory (just like "expand.exe").
  252.     If you want to install more versions (V7-MERCURY and V7-MIRAGE), use 
  253.     the new files "V7*.*". (The drivers have different names, therefore 
  254.     they do not affect one another)
  255.     You can now select the driver you desire on your Workstation.
  256.  
  257.     - Existing Installation (e.g. with VGA-driver):
  258.       Start "WIN V7SETUP" .
  259.       Since the Windows-Server-directory must be contained in the path too,
  260.       the file "v7setup.exe" will be found without resorting to the 
  261.       installations diskette.
  262.       IMPORTANT:
  263.       If V7SETUP asked for the installationsdiskette, that would mean that:
  264.       either not all the necessary files are in the server, or 
  265.       "v7setup.exe" has been found somewhere else (in this case call
  266.       "win x:\public\windows\v7setup" directly).
  267.  
  268.     - New installation of a workstation:
  269.          E.g.  x:
  270.                cd\public\windows
  271.                setup /n
  272.       Select userdefined setup .
  273.       Choose the driver (Manufacturer┤s diskette ).
  274.       Select desired drivers.
  275.  
  276. B20 For S3 cards: Get the current *.DLL files from Borland.
  277.  
  278. B21 In order to deinstall the old BIGWIN driver (or to install the new one)  
  279.     the following files are to be deleted :
  280.                   V7*.*  
  281.                 SPEA*.* 
  282.                   S3*.*
  283.                 BIGW*.* 
  284.               SPVHOOK.DLL
  285.                [CAR1K.DRV] Block in the file SYSTEM.INI  
  286.      First configure Windows to standard-VGA using Windows-SETUP.
  287.  
  288. B22 Please make sure that the system, the system-BIOS and the graphics-
  289.     board comply with the same level of PCI. The following PCI-boards 
  290.     support the PCI Version 2.0 : VEGA-PLUS, MIRAGE-P64 and MERCURY-P64.
  291.  
  292. B23 Copy the file MSSPEL2.DLL, version from may.11.94 (available in the 
  293.     BBS) to the directory MSAPPS\PROOF.
  294.  
  295. B24 Memory Manager 386MAX: Remove parameter VGASWAP.
