Title: Graphics: Second-Level Graphics Box Numbering
Product: WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS
Number: 1131-10/93
Problem
You have several graphic boxes within each chapter of your
document, and you want to number them using the chapter number as
well as the figure number. You also want the figure numbers to
start over with each chapter.
Concept
With WordPerfect 6.0, you are now able to number each figure
using different levels of numbers. For example, you can number
the figures of Chapter One as Figure 1.1, Figure 1.2 and Figure
1.3, and so on. You can have up to five levels, and you can
have 65,535 numbers within each level.
When you create a caption for a graphic box, the caption contains
a style with the type and number of the box you are creating,
such as Figure 1 or Table I. By adding second-level numbering,
you are simply editing the caption numbering style that has
already been created.
Because second-level numbering is set in a style, you can add it
at any point in the creation of a document. However, you cannot
turn off second-level numbering in the middle of a document. If
you turn off second-level numbering anywhere in the document, it
will be turned off in all of the boxes in the document that have
been created with that style.
Solution
Edit the caption numbering style to include second-level
numbering.
1 Select Graphics Boxes from the Graphics menu, then select
Numbering.
2 Highlight the type of graphics box you are using under the
Counter section.
3 Select Edit (2), then select Levels (2) and enter the number
of levels you are using. Then press Enter.
4 Select Numbering Method (3) if you want to change the style
of the numbers. Make the appropriate changes.
5 Click OK twice to return to the document screen.
6 Select Graphics Boxes from the Graphics menu, then select
Styles.
7 Highlight the type of graphics box you are using, then
select Edit (3).
8 Select Options (5), then Caption Options (2), and then
Caption Text Styles (9).
9 Choose Initial Style and highlight the type of box you are
using in the list of styles. Choose Edit (3), then Style
Contents (4).
10 Add the desired level separator, such as a period, comma, or
dash, after the [Box Num Disp] code.
11 Select Character from the Layout menu, then select Counters.
12 Find the type of box you are using in the list of Counters,
then highlight each level you want displayed and click on
Display in Document (8). Click OK when you are finished.
13 Press Exit (F7), then click OK.
14 Highlight the type of box you just edited, then choose
Select (1).
15 Click OK twice, then click Close to return to the document
screen.
If you want to change the first-level numbering for a new chapter
or section,
1 Turn on Reveal Codes (Alt+F3 or F+11 on an expanded
keyboard).
2 Place your cursor on the code for the box that you want to
change.
3 Select Graphics Boxes from the Graphics menu. Then select
Numbering.
4 Highlight Level 1 under the type of graphics box you are
using.
5 Choose Set Value (5) and enter the new chapter or section
number.
6 Click OK.
