  10. This guide will help you with WordPerfect 6.0 for DOS
  11. installation questions.  These checklists contain questions
  12. similar to those you will be asked if you call Customer Support,
  13. as well as supplemental information the Support Technicians may
  14. also give you.

  23. Installation Checklist
  24. The following checklist is helpful in pinpointing WordPerfect 6.0
  25. installation problems.

  27. ∙    Does your computer meet the minimum system requirements?
  28.  
  29. ∙    286 or above DOS-based PC   
  30.  
  31. ∙    480K free conventional memory 
  32.  
  33. ∙    DOS version 3.0 or later
  34.  
  35. ∙    7M free disk space on the drive where the WordPerfect 6.0
  36.      files will be located
  37.  
  38. Note: 
  39. These are the minimum requirements only.  See Tips below for the
  40. recommended system configuration.
  41.  
  42. ∙    Are you using the WordPerfect installation program or simply
  43.      copying the disks to your drive?  WordPerfect 6.0 files are
  44.      compressed and cannot be used if they are copied to your
  45.      hard drive.
  46.  
  47. ∙    Are you choosing a Standard, Custom, or Network
  48.      Installation?  Options vary according to the installation
  49.      type you've selected.

  51. Network Installations
  52. This checklist will help you with problems in installing
  53. WordPerfect 6.0 to a network.
  54.  
  55. ∙    Is your network type listed?
  56.  
  57. ∙    Do you have sufficient rights to the program directory?
  58.  
  59. ∙    Are the program files flagged correctly?
  60.  
  61. ∙    Are the .SET files on the network?  Where?
  62.  
  63. ∙    What rights do you have to the .SET file directory?
  64.  
  65. ∙    Ensure that you are logged in to the network.
  66.  
  67. ∙    Check to see what rights you have in the appropriate
  68.      directories.  If your rights are restricted, you may not be
  69.      able to install to the network.
  70.  
  71. ∙    Try logging in as another user or the network supervisor. 
  72.      This will help determine if your rights or access are an
  73.      issue.
  74.  
  75. ∙    Are you installing the program to the server from the server
  76.      or a workstation?  Some networks require that programs be
  77.      installed from a workstation to be properly configured
  78.      during the installation.

  80. ∙    Try installing from a different workstation.
  81.  
  82. Tips 
  83. ∙    While WordPerfect 6.0 will run with the minimum system
  84.      configuration, the following is the recommended system
  85.      configuration:
  86.  
  87. ∙    386 or above DOS-based PC
  88.  
  89. ∙    520K free conventional memory
  90.  
  91. ∙    DOS 6.0 or memory management software
  92.  
  93. ∙    16M free disk space on the drive where the WordPerfect 6.0
  94.      files will be located
  95.  
  96. ∙    VGA graphics adaptor and monitor
  97.  
  98. ∙    The same installation process is used if you are upgrading
  99.      or installing for the first time.
  100.  
  101. ∙    To increase the performance of your system, we suggest 2M
  102.      free extended or expanded memory to load the overlay files
  103.      and menus into memory using the /R startup switch.
  104.  
  105. Troubleshooting Hints
  106. Every effort has been made to make your installation of
  107. WordPerfect easy and error free.  However, if you find you are
  108. having difficulties installing WordPerfect, the following
  109. suggestions may help locate the source of the problem:

  111. Note:
  112. Some of the steps listed below assume a basic understanding of
  113. DOS commands, DOS utilities, and DOS structure.  If you find some
  114. of the steps confusing, contact a WordPerfect Customer Support
  115. Technician for assistance.
  116.  
  117. ∙    Write down any error messages you receive and at what point
  118.      during the installation you receive them.
  119.  
  120. ∙    Try running the installation again to see if the same
  121.      problem occurs.
  122.  
  123. ∙    If you have enough extra free disk space available, create a
  124.      directory on the hard drive and copy the files from each
  125.      installation disk to the directory.  Try to install from
  126.      that directory.

  128. ∙    Try booting with a simple configuration.  This will help
  129.      eliminate possible conflicts between the installation of
  130.      WordPerfect and other programs loaded into memory.  The
  131.      safest way to accomplish this is by creating a system disk
  132.      that contains a simple CONFIG.SYS file.  The CONFIG.SYS file
  133.      should, in most cases, contain only a FILES=30 line and a
  134.      BUFFERS=30 line.  Users of special hardware and/or disk
  135.      compression programs should refer to their respective
  136.      reference manuals for special instructions in creating a
  137.      boot disk.

  140. ∙    If you suspect a disk is bad, try running the installation
  141.      from the disks on another computer or try installing with a
  142.      different set of disks.  If you purchased the program from a
  143.      software dealer, they may   be able to help you determine if
  144.      a disk is bad and help  you get a set of replacement disks.
