The Gospel of John Lesson 17
Chapter 16. Comfort.
This is a continuation of the theme of John 15:18-27, the Believer
and the World.
1. Tribulation in the World, but Comfort by the Holy Ghost.
v.1-15.
a. Persecution by those professing belief in God. v. 1-6.
Christ forewarns His disciples that they will suffer
persecution
b. Christ must go away so that the Comforter might come.
v.7. He must leave them but he assures them that
Another is coming to take His place.
c. The Comforter's Work toward the World. v. 8-11.
1. Convince of sin--because of unbelief in the Lord
Jesus.
2. Convince of righteousness--because of Jesus'
ascension.
(received by the Father as the Righteous One).
3. Convince of judgment--because Satan is judged.
(by the Cross and the Resurrection).
d. The Comforter's Work in the Believer. v. 12-15.
1. He will guide into all Truth
2. He will show things to come,
3. He shall glorify Jesus.
4. He shall take of "the all things" of the Father and
of the Son and show them unto us.
2. Present Tribulation but Future Consolation. v. 16-33.
a. Jesus tells them that in a little while they will see
Him no more because He must go to the Father, - that is at
the time He died.
b. Then in a little while they would see Him again, - that is
when He arose from the dead.
At His death they would enter into great sorrow but it
would be transformed into joy at His resurrection.
Verses 16-24 are spoken in a parabolic way.
c. Then Jesus makes it very plain where He is going. v.28-30.
"I leave the world, and go to the Father."
d. The disciples' weakness and failure. v. 31-32.
e. Christ has overcome the world and its tribulation. v.33.
"in Me ye...have peace."
"In the world ye..... have tribulation.''
"Be of good cheer.'"
Christ the Victor in Us is Our Victory!
