  3.                         Chapter 13.  Feet Washing

  6. 1.   Jesus washed the Disciples' feet. v. 1-17.
  7.      In the beginning man desired to become as God, an exalted
  8.      being.(Gen. 3) Here God became a man, a servant,
  9.      The hour of departure to the Father was at hand.
  10.      Christ's love endured.  Love is the true basis of services
  11.  
  12.      (In Gen. 18 the Three Angels (including the Lord) came to 
  13.      Abraham who entertained them and washed their feet.  Two 
  14.      thousand years later one of the Angels, even the Lord 
  15.      Jesus knelt before humble believers and washed their feet.) 
  16.      Note also 1 Tim. 5:10.

  18.          The Type                           The Fulfillment

  20. Jesus became a servant------- ) "Took upon Him the form of a servant.."

  23. Laid aside His garments ----  ) "Emptied Himself" . (Literal translation)

  25. Prepared for service -------  ) The prepared Body.  Heb. 10:5, Mk. 10:45.

  27. Washed the disciples' feet -- ) Cleanses our hearts and walk by His death
  28. in humility.                  ) on the Cross.

  30. After washing He took ------  ) After the Cross He arose from the dead
  31. His garments.                 ) and took again His glory.

  33. He sat down ---------------   ) He sat down at the right hand of the
  34.                               ) Majesty on high. Heb. 1:3, Eph. 1:20.

  36. Declared Himself Lord-------- ) Declared to be the Lord and Christ
  37. and Master.                   ) Acts 2:36.

  39. As a servant He commissioned  ) As the Servant He commissioned His

  46.      Christ taught by example and by precept to serve in humility
  47.      and love To truly serve we must love and be humble. (Note
  48.      Luke 22:24-27--the strife in the shadow of the Cross.  "Who
  49.      is the greatest?" The same today.  Cf. 3 John 9.)

  51. 2.   Jesus showed who would betray Him. v. 18-30.
  52.      As He conversed with His disciples He announced that one of
  53.      them would betray Him. v.18-21. Cf.  John 6:70-71.
  54.      Jesus then showed that it was Judas by giving him the
  55.      sop. v.22-26. Satan entered in Judas.  He went out
  56.      immediately."And it was night"--naturally and spiritually.
  57.      He had treacherously deserted the Light of the World.
  58.      The disciples did not know why Judas went out.  Jesus kept it
  59.      secret. v. 28-30,
  60.      Christ's death was not an accident, but He knew full well that
  61.      it was coming and voluntarily went to the Cross, He had said,
  62.      "I have power to lay down my life and to take it again." John
  63.      10:18.
  64.      He did not die as a martyr for a righteous cause but as a
  65.      vicarious substitutionary offering for the sins of the world.
  66.      John 1:29.

  68. 3.   Jesus began to tell of His departure. v. 31:38.
  69.      Now the time had come. Judas had gone, death was fast
  70.      approaching.  Christ saw the glory in and through the Cross.
  71.      Five times He used the word "Glory".  Cf.Heb.12:2,
  72.      Philippians 2:5-11.
  73.      He told them that in a little while He must go.
  74.      Love is the bond that must keep the disciples. v. 34.
  75.      love is evidence that we are Christ's. v. 35.
  76.      Jesus foretold Peter's fall. Peter thought his love was strong
  77.      but it was weak. v. 36-38.
