The Gospel of John Lesson 10
Chapter 9. The Blind man.
The healing of the man born blind must be understood in the light
of Chapters 7 and 8. Signs and wonders are God's order for the end
of this age but the "Pharisees" will refuse "The Light" and abide
in darkness. At the close of the Feast of Tabernacles which is
symbolic of the end of this age, Jesus said, "I am the Light of the
World." (John 8:12) Now He demonstrated it by healing the man born
blind. Notice how often Jesus used the natural to reveal the
spiritual. In John 2 the natural temple and the spiritual temple,
in John 3 the wind and the Holy Spirit, in John 4 natural water and
spiritual water, in John 6 natural bread and the Bread of Life.
The sin of an individual or of his parents cannot be said to always
be the cause of a sickness or infirmity.
Note: Job 1-2. Job was righteous yet was stricken.
Philippians 2:25-30. Epaphroditus sick nigh unto death for
the Gospel.
Dan. 8:27. Daniel sick because of a vision.
James 5:15. "If he has committed sins..."
There is both physical healing and spiritual healing in Christ.
The spittle of the Living Lord, who had said, "I am the Light of
the World," mixed with the dust of the earth was used to anoint the
blind eyes. The same Lord, who took the dust of the earth and
fashioned the perfect eyes of Adam (Gen. 2:7), could easily make
these whole.
Note how the man washed in the pool of Siloam from whence the water
for the Feast of Tabernacles had just been drawn the day before by
the priest with the golden pitcher. The priest, the pitcher, and
the water are a type of Jesus as the Baptizer in the holy Ghost.
Now this miracle by the waters of the pool of Siloam (which means
"sent") shows that Jesus, the One Sent from God, is our Healer, by
the power of the Holy Ghost.
