  5. I.   THE BOOK OF ACTS

  7. 1.   It is obvious that the title "The Acts of the Apostles" is both too
  8.      comprehensive and too limited to be correct because:
  9.  
  10.      (1)  The book deals, in the main, with the acts of only two of the
  11.           apostles, Peter and Paul.
  12.  
  13.      (2)  The ministry of other notable individuals, besides apostles, is 
  14.           also recorded.
  15.  
  16.      (3)  The acts recorded in this book are in actuality the acts of Jesus
  17.           working through a diversity of instruments by whom be continues 
  18.           "to do and teach" what he "began to do and teach" in the Gospels.

  20. 2.   The book of "Acts" forms a necessary connecting link between the 
  21.      Gospels and the Epistles.
  22.  
  23. 3.   It is evident from the "we sections" in the book, e.g., 16:10-17, that 
  24.      Luke was the author, a companion of Paul, and an eye witness to many 
  25.      of the incidents which he relates.
  26.  
  27. 4.   The chief doctrinal emphasis in the book of Acts is upon the 
  28.      personality and activity of the Holy Spirit in fulfillment of the 
  29.      promise in 1:8.
  30.  
  31. 5.   The book opens with the preaching of the gospel in Jerusalem, the 
  32.      great ecclesiastical centre of the Jewish nation, and closes with the 
  33.      preaching of the gospel in Rome, the great political centre of the 
  34.      earth, thus testifying to the power of the gospel.
  35.  
  36. 6.   The events recorded in Acts cover a period of about thirty years.
  37.  
  38. 7.   The key verse of the book is 1:8.
