  8.         2.  The Second commandment
  9.             "Thou  shalt not make a graven image,  nor bow to them,  nor serve
  10.             them."  Exodus 20:4-6.
  11.  
  12.             Key Thought - Belonging to God.
  13.  
  14.             a. The Problem - Exaltation and protection of the flesh.
  15.  
  16.                Man has an inherent tendency to desire the blessings of God  on
  17.                his own terms.  He seeks to store them within himself.  Genesis
  18.                3:5, "Ye shall be as gods."
  19.  
  20.                Those  who  fail to place God first in their lives will  always
  21.                start to construct their own edifice of self-worship.
  22.  
  23.             b. Symptoms of Spiritual Decay.
  24.  
  25.                "The  idols  of the heathen are silver and gold,  the  work  of
  26.                man's hands.   They have mouths,  but speak not, eyes, but they
  27.                see not,  ears,  but they hear not, neither is their any breath
  28.                in their mouths.   Those who make them will be like them.  Yes,
  29.                everyone that trusts in them."  Psalm 135:1-18.

  31.                1. Empty Mouths.
  32.                   They have nothing to say.   They have empty hearts, there is
  33.                   no real communication or communion with God or others.
  34.  
  35.                2. Blind Eyes.
  36.                   They see truth not as it really is,  but as it appears  from
  37.                   their own point of view.  They are conceited, no one else is
  38.                   right.   Distortion.  (eg.  when  my  sight  went  funny  at
  39.                   Lockhardt.)

  41.                3. Deaf Ears.
  42.                   They  are  not receptive to the Word of God,  and  will  not
  43.                   accept  the authority structure of God's Word.  Because they
  44.                   have  refused the word of reproof,  they  remain  unchanged,
  45.                   deteriorating all the time,  yet refusing to admit they have
  46.                   a need.  2 Corinthians 3:13-15.

  48.                4. No Breath.
  49.                   Breath is synonymous with life, (or spirit).  They are empty
  50.                   and only have a pretense of spiritual life.
  51.                   Deut.  9:19,  "When he hears the words of this curse that he
  52.                   blessed himself saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in
  53.                   the stubborness (or imagination) of my heart."
  54.  
  55.                   The Adamic nature is here revealed, "He blesses himself."
  56.  
  57.                      (i) Deception - He refuses the facts. He is hard-hearted.
  58.                     (ii) Rebellion - He walks according to his own will.
  59.                    (iii) Pride  - He  has  a tremendous urge to  preserve  his
  60.                                   image.

  62.             c. God's Answer - The Baptism of Fire.

  64.                1 Corinthians 3:12-15,  "If any man builds upon the  foundation
  65.                with...wood,  hay  and  stubble.   Each man's work will  become
  66.                evident, for the day will -
  67.  
  68.                Reveal it, it will be revealed by fire.
  69.  
  70.                "The axe is already laid at the root of the trees...thrown into
  71.                the fire...,  He himself will baptise you with the Holy  Spirit
  72.                and  fire.   He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."
  73.                Matt. 3:10-12, Gal. 5:15-16; 6:8.

  75.         3.  The Third Commandment.
  76.             "Thou  shalt  not take the name of the Lord God in  vain."  Exodus
  77.             20:7.

  79.             Key Thought - Faith in God.

  81.             a. The Problem - God is not real.
  82.                Suggest to a blasphemer consequences of taking the Lord's  name
  83.                in vain, he will reply, "I didn't mean anything by it."
  84.  
  85.                His problem - unbelief.  God is not a reality to him.
  86.  
  87.             b. The Answer - Submission to God alone.
  88.  
  89.                Heb. 11:6, "Without faith it is impossible to please Him (God),
  90.                for he that cometh to God must believe that He is,  and that He
  91.                is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him."

  93.                1. Submission to whom?  "To God"
  94.                2. Submission how?  "Come believing"  "Must Believe"
  95.  
  96.                   A.  (i) That God is - His existence.
  97.                      (ii) That He rewards - His grace.
  98.                     (iii) Those that diligently - His children seek Him.

  100.                   B.  The  principle of faith is also amplified positively in
  101.                       Hebrews 11:6:
  102.  
  103.                       (i) Purity of motive.
  104.                           "Seek Him":- His presence, His will, His glory.
  105.                                        (eg. Moses)
  106.                      (ii) Earnestness of purpose.
  107.                           "Diligently  seek":-  seek   sincerely,    openly,
  108.                                         persistently.  (eg.  lost sheep,  lost
  109.                                         coin. Luke 15:4-10.)
  110.                     (iii) Simplicity of faith.
  111.                           "Believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder" Luke
  112.                           9:13. Note there:-
  113.                                 First we see God's attentiveness,
  114.                                 then we see God's benevolence.
  115.  
  116.                "God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
  117.                "Submit  therefore to God.  Resist the devil and he  will  flee
  118.                from  you.   Draw  near to God and He will draw near  to  you."
  119.                James 4:6-8.

  121.         4.  The  Fourth Commandment.
  122.             "Remember the Sabbath day,  to keep  it holy."  Exodus 20:8-9.

  124.             Key Thought - Waiting on God. Psalm 37:1-9.
  125.             "Fret not,  trust,  delight, commit, rest, cease and wait upon the
  126.             Lord."

  128.             a. The Problem
  129.                Wilfulness, self-effort.
  130.                Lev.  25:1-12,  describes  the  principle of the Sabbath as  it
  131.                applied to the man on the land.   Only great faith in God would
  132.                enable obedience to this law, the farmer had to trust God:  the
  133.                exhortation to us is:-
  134.  
  135.                "The  fear  of the Lord is the beginning of  wisdom."  Proverbs
  136.                9:10.  Note also Proverbs 3:5-10.

  138.                  (i) Unite ourselves with the Word of God. Heb. 4:2.
  139.                 (ii) Open our hearts to the purpose of God. Isa. 55:8-9.
  140.                (iii) Disregard  self-effort,  give God a go (to  work).  Matt.
  141.                      16:24.

  143.                God will:-  perform His will. Phil.2:12-13.
  144.                            reveal His will. Rom. 12:2.
  145.                            pour out His blessings. Isa. 58:13-14.
