LAVER
SERIES: MOSES' TABERNACLE. LESSON NO.3.
1. POSITION.
The Laver was the second piece of furniture in the Court on the
way into the Presence of God.
The Brazen Altar - blood - John 19:34
The Brazen Laver - water - 1 John 5:6
When the blood and water flowed from His side at Calvary, the pro-
phetic truths of the Brazen Altar and the Brazen Laver were
fulfilled.
Heb.9:21 - Laver sprinkled with blood - although the Laver is a
separate experience from the Altar, it is founded upon it and
depends on the shedding of blood.
2. IT'S PURPOSE AND DESIGN. Ex.30:17-21.
Speaks of the sanctifying power of the Word of God. John 17:17.
(a) Washing.
Before a Priest could enter into the Sanctuary, he had to be
cleansed and washed "that they die not". Psa. 24:3 4;
Ex.:30:19 21. Eph.5:26 - "That he might sanctify and
cleanse it (the church) with the washing of water by the
Word" Psa. 119:9; John 15:3.
Ex.40:11- "And Thou shall anoint the laver- -"
Today we find God sanctifying His people through an
"anointed" word.
1 Cor.6:11.......... but ye are washed, but ye are
sanctified...... by the Spirit of our God".
- Jesus said "The words that I speak unto you are Spirit and
Life" - John 6:63; 2 Cor.3:6.
The Laver was sprinkled with blood and oil.
Many people minister the Word sprinkled just with blood -
The result being a word that is lifeless and without the
energy of the Holy Spirit. 1 John 5:6-8, John 3:5.
Water Baptism. - the burnt offering was always washed in
water. Lev.1:9 - "But his inwards and his legs shall he wash
in water. .." We die inwardly at water baptism and rise to
'walk' in newness of life. Rom.6:4.
Therefore, if we desire to be totally surrendered (burnt
offering) and a "living sacrifice", the need is to experience
the washing of water baptism. Heb. 10: 22-1 Rom. 12: 1.
(b) Material.
Ex.30:19 - "Thou shalt also make a Laver of Brass........
- The judgement of God - As we look into the Word any dirt
that might be on us is judged and cleansed
Ex.38:8 - to make the Laver the women of Israel were to
surrender their brass 'looking glasses'. Looking glasses
were for the glorification of the flesh. They were brought
from Egypt - the old life - the world. They are a symbol of
vanity and pride. The Laver then speaks of separation from
the world and from the flesh with its pride, lusts and sins.
1 Tim.2:9-10; 1 Pet.3:3-4; James 1:22-24 the mirror of the
Word.
- The emphasis should not be on the outward man (as the
women of Israel found out) but on the inner man of the heart
- we are to look into the 'mirror' of the word and see what
manner of man we are.
Measurements.
(i) Scripture is silent of its size - a mystery -
Eph.5:26,32;
1 Tim.3:16.
(ii) Cannot measure Holiness - need to be led by the
Holy Spirit
in details of holiness (e.g. length of hair and skirts etc.)
(iii) Silences in Scripture often speak louder than words
- the supply of the Word of God is limitless, Every
time the priest sacrificed or approached the
Presence of God it demanded washing - it must have
happened dozens of times a day. The source never
dries up, always a continual flow from the Rock.
(d) The Water
(i) Water from the smitten rock - Ex. 17:6, 1
Cor.10:4, Christ was smitten on Calvary - the
result being an outpouring of the Holy Spirit
(water). All cleansing and washing finds its
source in the smitten rock (Christ).
(ii) Running water - "A Laver and its foot". This is
the only description. The Eastern tradition of
running water must have been incorporated in the
Tabernacle to fulfil the Laver's purpose. As the
first sacrifice was washed in the Laver, the water
would have been polluted from its blood, leaving
the water unclean.
Speaks of the continual cleansing flow of the word
washing over us as priests and our spiritual
sacrifices.
Lev.15:13; 14:5-6,50-51; Num.19:17; 2 Kings 3:11.
