"WHEN" is a Message Alarm Clock & Scheduler that will beep when any alarm
time & date has come due. If the computer was off when the alarm came due you
will be beeped when you power-up your computer. It will continue to beep at
the user programmed interval until you acknowledge it. You will NEVER miss a
message. You can keep, view, and print messages before and after they come
due. Create a printed schedule at any time. It has a phone dialer and the
resident portion occupies less than 5K of RAM. Tie a text file to each
message and edit it with your word processor with the push of the F3 function
key. You may enable the first page of each text file to print on your
schedule.
Use any IBM PC/XT/AT Compatible computer.
Notice to previous "WHEN" users
To update to this version please do the following.
1. Copy WHEN.EXE & WHENREAD.DOC over your existing files.
2. Type WHEN (Enter)
3. Type O for Options.
4. Type R for Re-sort.
5. WHEN INIT may be replaced with WHEN BW in autoexec.bat for Laptops.
6. This completes the Update.
Notice to Laptop users.
WHEN INIT in your autoexec.bat may be replaced with WHEN BW for Laptops.
This gives you a black & white display.
New features for version 3.1
1. Allows printer output to be directed to the printer or an ASCII text file.
2. Left button on mouse scrolls through messages.
Right button will cause Exit from WHEN.

Use WHEN BW in the autoexec.bat file.
Other computers use WHEN INIT in the autoexec.bat file.
2. Status can be changed to "Disable alarm" while you are working with "WHEN".
3. "WHEN" will now warn you if WHENRES.EXE has not been run first.
4. WHENTXT.EXE makes a text file of all data in WHEN.

New features for version 2.9
The Dialer in previous versions of "WHEN" would not work with
some AT clones at high CPU speeds. This version fixes the
Dialer so that it will work on all IBM compatible computers at
any microprocessor speed.
v2.9 ADDITIONS
1. Select date range for schedule printout.
2. Select number of monthly calendars to print on Schedule.
3. View Calendar.
4. Calendar display and printout note which days have something
in their schedule.
- denotes that a Message and a Text file will be printed with your
schedule.
: denotes that a Message will be printed with your schedule.
. denotes that a Message is programmed for the associated day.
5. Option to include a text file printout with each printed message.
(The file is printed up to the first "New Page" character)

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT
If you already have WHEN installed, then copy WHEN.EXE and WHENREAD.DOC into
your ROOT directory. Refer to top of this file for Notice to previous "WHEN"
users.
If this is a new installation, assure that you do not already have files
named WHEN.EXE, WHENRES.EXE, WHENREAD.DOC, WHEN.CFG, WHEN.PTR & WHEN.DAT in
your ROOT directory. This program is designed for these files to reside only
in your ROOT directory.
The files for the WHEN program must be on a diskette in drive A: or B:
before proceeding.
Hard Drive Info:

During installation some commands will be added to your autoexec.bat file.
After installation the commands "WHENRES.EXE" & "WHEN INIT" should be moved in
front of any command that runs a program without exiting to DOS during
execution of your autoexec.bat file during power-up.
If you don't have an autoexec.bat file in your ROOT directory, then create
one now: COPY con autoexec.bat (Enter) (Ctrl) Z (Enter)

HARD DRIVE INSTALLATION:
1. AT THE C:\ PROMPT TYPE: A:WHENaTOc (ENTER) or
1. AT THE C:\ PROMPT TYPE: B:WHENbTOc (ENTER)
2. Press (Enter) when prompted to create your data file.
3. Type E to Exit.
4. Remove your WHEN diskette from drive A: or B:
5. Type WHEN (Enter) to get back into the WHEN program.
Four lines will be added to your autoexec.bat file.
PROMPT $d $p $g (* Makes your DOS prompt show the Path & Date *)
VERIFY ON (* Enables disk error checking *)

FLOPPIE INSTALLATION:
1. Make a DOS diskette & put it into drive A:
2. Put your WHEN diskette into drive B:

4. Press (Enter) when prompted to create your data base.
5. Type E (Enter) to Exit. (Your WHEN program is in drive A: now)
6. Remove your WHEN diskette from drive B:
7. Type WHEN (Enter) to get back into the WHEN program.

USER INSTRUCTIONS
To PROGRAM an ALARM:
1. Type WHEN (Enter).
2. Type the letter 'A' to "Add Event".
3. Follow the menu driven instructions.
Note: The (Enter) key is used to go from item to item.
To ENABLE a MESSAGE alarm to be PRINTED on your SCHEDULE:
1. By typing the letter 'T', while at the main menu, the : or -
in the display will toggle off or the : will toggle on or off.
2. By typing the letter 'I', while at the main menu, the - will appear
noting that the text file connected with that message will print with
your schedule.
When you see : ,the displayed message has been programmed
to be printed with your schedule.
When you see - ,the displayed message has been programmed
to be printed with your schedule and the text file connected with
that message will print with your schedule.
To PRINT your SCHEDULE:
1. Select 'Options' from the main menu.
2. Select 'Print Schedule' from the 'Options' menu.
3. Select 'All' for all messages marked with : and - or
3. Select 'Select date range' to limit the range of dates for
messages to be printed.
4. Select the number of rows of calendars to be printed on
your schedule. There are two monthly calendars per row.
To VIEW the CALENDAR:
1. Type V
2. PgUp/PgDn etc.
3. (Esc) or (Enter) to quit.
To ACKNOWLEDGE an ALARM:
When a message comes due, type 'N' to acknowledge it. You can then delete
it by typing 'X' for eXtract Event. Or, you can Change it in any way you
wish. Or, you can leave it in the file for your review or printout.
To RESUME where you were in the list of messages after changing the time or
date, Adding a new message, or Making another message PRESS F4.
To EDIT the TEXT FILE connected to a message press F3.
Put the name of your editor into the Setup Option. At the main menu press
O for Options, S for Setup, then E to change the name of the Editor.
Note: WHEN.TXT requires an ASCII editor.
To DISABLE ALARM:
Type 'S' for Status. This will toggle the Status from 'Alarm Enabled' to
'Alarm Disabled' or vice versa. The alarm will not beep again until you
enable it by typing 'S' again. This feature should be used if you go on
vacation and leave your computer on.
Extra Notes: 1. EXIT use: (Alt)X or E.
2. You can set Alarm Duration and/or Interval to 0. This will
cause a time of about 0.1 seconds to be used.
3. All WHEN files will reside in your ROOT directory.
4. Your calendar text files will be put into your current
directory.
5. You can print your calendar text file, created by the Option
"Calendar file", with Copy CAL1989.TXT PRN (Enter).
6. This program will work through the year 2098.
7. Calendar printout will work through the year 9999.
8. While editing, F7 will make characters lower case.
9. While editing, F8 will make characters upper case.
RE-SORT MESSAGES: During a power outage or computer lockup the WHEN.PTR file
may be corrupted. In the event your messages are ever
listed out of order or not listed properly, use the Re-sort
Option.
More details
1. CGA monitors may have some snow. EGA, VGA & Monochrome work perfectly.
2. Use OPTIONS SETUP before Dialing if your modem is not on Com1.
3. This version will work with Com1 & Com2.
4. You can use WordStar type commands to edit your messages.
5. (Ctrl) backspace will delete a line.
6. WHENTXT.EXE makes a text file of all data in WHEN.
USE: WHENTXT > textfile.ext (Enter)
Note: Do not copy your WHEN.CFG, WHEN.DAT, or WHEN.TXT for distribution.

You create WHEN.TXT with an ASCII word processor.
TECHNICAL INFO for the technically minded curious.
WHENRES.EXE is wedged into Interrupt 1CH. It alters alarm status, controls
the sound, then calls Interrupt 1CH, and finally executes an IRET.
WHEN.EXE communicates with WHENRES.EXE thru Software Interrupt 5E Hex.
Registered user's benefits
1. I will send the most recent version of the program to you.
2. The letter 'R' that flashes on your screen will be removed.
Once you have registered "WHEN", I will send a password to you to
remove the Registration prompt on your screen.
BBS uploads
Please put all of the files into a .ZIP file named WHEN30.ZIP or the
appropriate archive format for the BBS that you are uploading to.
Also, WHENBBS.TXT has a description of WHEN30.ZIP that you can use.
