NEWSDATE
================================
version 1.00 released 12/18/93
by
Michael A. Conley
A public domain SysOp utility from the Charlatan's Cabin BBS
for Wildcat! 3.x SysOps
WHAT IT DOES:
-------------
NEWSDATE generates a brief ASCII display file which reports the time
and date your NEWSLETTER was last updated. We suggest using this as
a HELLO screen. The program will let you add another text file to the
internally generated message, so you can personalize the display.
HOW IT WORKS:
-------------
NEWSDATE reads an ASCII configuration file to learn the location of your
newsletter, the name of an additional text file (if desired) and the
name of the output file you want NEWSDATE to write (usually a HELLO
screen.)
INSTALLATION:
-------------
Installing the program is easy.
1. Place NEWSDATE.EXE anywhere in your path so it can be run
from any directory. The program requires BRUN40.EXE
which you almost certainly already have. If not, it's
widely available, including my BBS ... see below.
2. Edit the sample NEWSDATE.CFG file to suit your directory
structure and filename choices. A typical NEWSDATE.CFG
file is enclosed in this ZIPfile, and is reproduced here
for your convenience:
NEWSLETTER=c:\wc30\disp\newsltr.bbs
OUTFILE=c:\wc30\disp\hello7.bbs
ADDTEXT=c:\wc30\newsdate.txt
| The three lines above are all that is required to run NEWSDATE.
| Place this configuration file anywhere in your DOS path.
|
| Edit the entries above to place a complete drive/path/filename
| on each one.
|
| NEWSLETTER= this is the location of your newsletter in the
| Wildcat! display directory.
|
| OUTFILE= this is the name of the file (usually a HELLO
| file) that you want NEWSDATE to write.
|
| ADDTEXT= this is optional. If you want to add a text file
| to the display file created by NEWSDATE, put its
| complete drive/path/filename here. You may use
| Wildcat! color codes in this file if you wish,
| and you may place an optional @PAUSE@ at the end
| if you want Wildcat! to pause after displaying
| the HELLO file.
3. ADD NEWSDATE to your daily maintenance batch file, so that you don't
need to remember to run it manually when you edit your newsletter.

PROBLEMS, SUGGESTIONS:
This program is public domain. I don't seek or accept any donations or
registration fees for any of my Wildcat! utility programs, including
TODAYBBS, FLOP, NETBULL, USTAT, and others ... however I invite you to
read the short textfile "CHARWARE" enclosed in this ZIPfile. It suggests
that you make a contribution to YOUR favorite charity if you find this
program useful.
I welcome suggestions, and will try to help (no guarantees) if there are
problems.
You may contact me at The Charlatan's Cabin BBS (213) 654-7337. Mention
your Wildcat! registration number in the comment and you'll be upgraded to
visiting sysop level without the usually required registration by mail.
My Internet address is: michael.conley@cabin.com
You may also leave a message via CompuServe EMail. My CompuServe account
number is 70250,220. I also regularly check the Mustang Software head-
quarters BBS, especially the "3rd Party Utilities Help" conference.
Please, NO VOICE CALLS. This isn't meant to be unfriendly, but with the
price of public domain software these days ... I just can't afford to be
"on call." I WILL respond to your questions via my BBS, Internet,
CompuServe, or via the Mustang Software registered SysOp BBS.
