A search string is typed in at the prompt and consists of field name(s)
and literal text, for example:
'DRAW' IN LOCATION
This will find the record with Drawing Room in Location. DRAW is the
literal text and must be enclosed in ' ' and LOCATION is the field name.
Field names are shown on the left hand side of the screen. Where they
are marked with a S (string or text) you can use IN. Numeric fields can
use the operators such as = > (greater than) < (less than) etc. Most
of the time you will be using IN.
Search strings can be connected together:
|'SCHUS' IN PUBLISHER AND 'WE' IN AUTHOR
tThis would find (among others probably) Schuster in Publisher and Wells
in author. It would also find an author called Frewe for example.
_To save a selection press ALT_S at the scrolling table. Saved selections
can be used in the Reports Section of BOOK STACK.
nPress F10 for a picklist of often-used search strings. ALT_F10 to add to list.

Fields which are marked with N are numeric and the "range" operators can
be used. For example the date field DUEBACK is numeric - to find all
books which are due back by 4 May 1994:
|DUEBACK <= 04/05/94
DUEBACK is the field name (see left hand side of search screen) and
<= (less than or equal to) is a numeric range operator (operators are
listed on the right side of the screen).
xDates must be entered in the format shown: dd/mm/yy
lAnother example: to find all books priced between
12 and
bPRICE >= 12 AND PRICE <= 15
This translates as : select books whose Price field is greater than or equal
to 12 pounds and is also less than or equal to 15 pounds.
gSearch strings can joined up by AND/OR/NOT and be up to 255 characters long.

jBOOK STACK - Program Overview
kThe program has four main functions:
|1) Storing of book and magazine details (title, publisher etc) and
searching/selecting on any of these fields or combinations of
fields.
2) Keeping track of borrowers - a report can be produced which shows
any books on loan which should have been returned by now.
c3) A study aid - unlimited notes can be attached to each book and for
each note a revision date can be set. A reminder (optional) will display
when the program is first run each day to show that there are notes that
should be revised. Staged repetition has been shown to be one of the best
ways to memorize information. (see REVISION help topic for more details)
T4) Maintains a database of your favourite quotations, which can be browsed
and searched by topic.
The bottom three lines of each screen are context-relevant help, the next
line up shows the keystrokes to use and the one above is for mouse users.

pREVISION SECTION
rResearchers have found that the best way to retain information is to
review it at staged intervals such as: one day later, 3 days later,
and after a week and then a month. This enables the memory to be
refreshed just before it would otherwise start to fade.
iBOOK STACK makes this process easy by means of a Revision Date for each
Note Field. Every day you should run BOOK STACK and choose option 1 from
the Revision Menu to see what needs reviewing. At this point you can reset
the Revision Date by either a predefined period or by keying in a new date.
UThere is a field called Previous Revision which is the number of days
between the Next Revision date you entered last time and the PREVIOUS
Next Revision date. So if the Previous Revision shows as 3 days it would
indicate that you should now review in, say, 7 days - and therefore click on
the 7 button which will add seven days on to today's date and put that date
in the Next Revision field.
Eventually, when you are sure you have learnt the material, you can select
a Next Revision of NONE which will take the Notes out of the Revision
System.
