  9.      Pliny   the  Elder,  of  Roman
  10. fame, stated that  garlic  has very
  11. powerful properties.  He claimed it
  12. is an antidote for poisonous snakes
  13. and dogs.  He also  said  the  odor
  14. alone would drive away serpents and
  15. scorpions.   Many  physicians   and
  16. herbalists   used  garlic   as   an
  17. antidote  for  poisons.   If   they
  18. didn't work, do  you  really  think
  19. the stories  would  have come to us
  20. down the ages?
  21.     And, Pliny claimed garlic acted

  24. as an aphrodisiac.  (Jones, 1964)
  25.      Vikings and  Phoenicians carried
  26. it with them on their excursions.  It
  27. undoubtedly prevented scurvy on those
  28. long  voyages.   In  the   thirteenth 
  29. century, Marco Polo related  the many
  30. uses  of  garlic  in  his  documented
  31. journeys from the far east.
  32.      The Chinese, not  to be outdone,
  33. have known about and  used garlic for
  34. centuries.  It  was  mentioned in the
  35. Calendar of the Hsai  over 2000 years
  36. before Christ.  Ballads  said  to  be
  37. written by Confucius  mention garlic.
  38.      An ancient Welsh  rhyme tells us
  39. another story . . . 
  40.      "Eat leeks in March and wild      
  41.            garlic in May,
