Message:
The names shown on the METISNET SURNAME LIST are those which have been
submitted by Researchers and indicate that at least one subscriber is
doing research on that family name. A few Surnames are being researched
by as many as 15 Researchers and to provide an example, many names like
Boyer, Bruneau, Cardinal, Delorme, Grant, Houle, McKay, Ross, Spence and
Vandal, all show over 10. This means that 10 or more Researchers always
know that they can share information or research tips with the others,
get help, or even brag a little.
This SURNAME list was prepared 15 Nov 1993 and includes about 600 names.
The same list was less than 200 in 1992. There were 66 new subscribers
to the service during 1993 and they registered the names which created the
increase of 400 Surnames. This clearly shows that each new subscriber
sent in 6 names which were not on the Surname Register before. The
new subscribers also registered as being interested in many of the names
which were already there and this is how the "count" gets higher for the
names which have been on the longest. The count for each Surname
couldn't be shown here because of space limitations however the Annual
Update to the list does show this in detail.
If your Surnames don't appear on the Surname List, and you'd like to
have them included, please follow the procedure noted in the main letter
(ie.send a Pedigree Chart). Even if your Surnames are already on the list,
follow the same procedure as it will help other subscribers to learn
that you have information on that family which you are willing to share,
or that they can share information they have, with you.
This is the text in a README message which will be included in the
METISNET File which will go out to the Bulletin Boards. This is intended
to compliment the Information Letter by providing more insight into how
the system works and also illustrate how there can be advantages and
benefits for subscribers.
