Title: Tables: Placing Tables Side-By-Side on a Page
Product: WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS
Number: 1015-10/93
Problem
The document you are preparing contains information that needs to
be formatted in two tables. You want to place those tables
beside each other on the page so those who read your document can
compare the information in the two tables. You have created two
tables to be placed side-by-side, and the codes for them display
side-by-side in Reveal Codes, but the tables display one above
the other when they are printed.
Concept
The Tables feature of WordPerfect 5.1 lets you stack tables, but
you cannot place one table next to another. You are also able to
wrap text around tables, but only if you are using tables created
within graphics boxes. WordPerfect will, however, allow you to
place table boxes side-by-side by creating them in columns,
positioning them right and left at the same vertical point on the
page, or using the Advance feature. You can also create the
appearance of side-by-side tables using one table.
Solutions Each of the methods below will accomplish the same
purpose. We suggest that you view your document before you print
it, to make sure that the two tables are aligned correctly.
1 Press Print (Shift+F7).
2 Choose View Document.
Method 1:
You can create two columns and put a graphics table box in each
column. First, you need to create and edit the columns.
1 Press Columns (Alt+F7), then choose Columns and Define.
2 Make sure that the column Type is set to Newspaper, and that
the Number of Columns is 2. You can modify the Distance
Between Columns and the Margins, but if you leave the
default settings as they are, your two columns will be
evenly spaced and centered across the page.
3 Press Exit (F7), then choose On to turn the columns on.
Now you need to create and edit the first table box with a table.
4 Press Graphics (Alt+F9), Table Box, then Create.
5 Choose Edit, then press Columns/Tables (Alt+F7).
6 Choose Tables and Create; then enter the number of Columns
and Rows that you want in this table. Press Enter after
each entry.
You are now in the Table Edit screen. At this point, you can
edit the table to fit the specifications of your document. When
you are finished, continue to step 7.
7 Press Exit (F7) twice to return to the Definition: Table Box
screen.
8 Choose Horizontal Position, then Left to position the first
table box on the left side of the page.
9 Press Exit (F7) to return to the document editing screen.
10 Press Ctrl+Enter to begin the next column. This will place
a [HPg] command in your document, and will move your cursor
to the top of the next column.
Now you need to create and edit the second table box to include a
table.
11 Press Graphics (Alt+F9), then choose Table Box and Create.
12 Choose Edit, then press Columns/Tables (Alt+F7).
13 Choose Create, then enter the number of Columns and Rows
that you want in this table. Press Enter after each entry.
You are now in the Table Edit screen again. You can also edit
this second table to fit your specifications.
14 Press Exit (F7) twice to return to the Definition: Table Box
screen.
15 Choose Horizontal Position, then Right to position the
second table box on the right side of the page.
16 Press Exit (F7) to return to the document editing screen.
17 Press Columns/Tables (Alt+F7), then choose Columns and Off.
Method 2:
You can create two graphical table boxes and position them on the
right and left at the same vertical point on the page.
Start by creating the first table box and positioning it on the
left.
1 Press Graphics (Alt+F9), then choose Table Box and Create.
2 Choose Edit, then press Columns/Tables (Alt+F7).
3 Choose Table, then Create to create the table for the first
table box.
4 Enter the number of Columns and Rows that you want in this
table. Press Enter after each entry.
You are now in the Table Edit screen. At this point, you can
edit the table to fit your specifications.
5 Choose Exit (F7) twice to return to the Definition: Table
Box screen.
6 Choose Horizontal Position, then Left to position the table
box on the left side of the page.
7 Choose Exit (F7) to return to the document editing screen.
You now need to create the second table box, and position it.
8 Repeat steps 1 through 5 above to create the second table
box and table.
9 Choose Horizontal Position, then Right to position the
second table box on the right side of the page.
10 Choose Exit (F7) to return to the document editing screen.
Method 3:
You can use the Advance feature to place your tables side-by-
side.
The first step is to create the first table and position it on
the left side of the document.
1 Press Columns/Table (Alt+F7), then choose Tables (2).
2 Choose Create (1), then enter the number of columns and rows
you want in this table.
3 Choose Options (6), then choose Position of Table (3).
Choose Left (1).
4 Since this is the only table that has been created, the
columns will extend across the width of the page. Use the
Ctrl key and the arrow keys to resize the columns.
5 Press Exit (F7) twice to return to the document editing
screen.
6 Press Format (Shift+F8), then select Other (4).
7 Select Advance (1), then select Up (1). Then enter the
Distance. The distance you enter is measured relative to
the cursor position. For example, if you enter an Advance
Up measurement of 1" and the cursor is at line 3.5", you
will be advanced to line 2.5". Choose a distance from your
cursor point that will align the second table with the
first.
Now you need to create the second table.
8 Press Columns/Table (Alt+F7), then choose Tables (2).
9 Choose Create (1), then enter the number of columns and rows
you want in this table.
10 Choose Options (6), then choose Position of Table (3).
Choose Right (2).
11 You will also have to adjust the width of the columns in
this table so the two do not overlap. Use the Ctrl key and
the arrow keys to resize the columns.
Note:
If a Center Page code exists on the page, the tables may not line
up or may not be positioned correctly. Remove the Center Page
code to correct the problem.
Method 4:
You can modify one table to look like two tables. For example,
if you need two tables with five columns each, you will first
create a table with 11 columns.
1 Press Columns/Table (Alt+F7), then choose Tables (2).
2 Choose Create (1), then enter 11 for the number of columns.
Enter the number of rows you want in this table.
3 In the Table Edit screen, move your cursor to cell F1 (the
sixth column)
4 Press Block (Alt+F4, or F12 on an expanded keyboard). Press
Home and the Down Arrow key to highlight the whole column.
5 Choose Lines (3), then choose All (7). Choose None (1) to
remove all the lines from the sixth column.
6 Use the Lines feature again to edit the border of each open
cell. Set the new borders to match your predefined table
border. For example, if your table has double lines around
it, change the open edges of the cells to double lines.
