==================
What is Shareware?
==================
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before
buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you
are expected to register. Individual programs differ on details -- some
request registration while others require it, some specify a maximum
trial period. With registration, you get anything from the simple right
to continue using the software to an updated program with printed
manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and
the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions
as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just
like commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In
both cases, there are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference
is in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the
right to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or
3
to a specific group. For example, some authors require written permis-
sion before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.
Youshould find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether
it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your
needs easier, because you can try before you buy. And because the
overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate
money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for
it.

Some Fundamentals
Before you install BCM, it might be wise to get acquainted with a
few terms and fundamental. The screens of the BCM programs have many
parts and although they are easy to use, not understanding them can
be frustrating. Here are some terms and conventions used in BCM.
All functions of BCM can be easily accessed by keyboard but full
mouse support is provided.
This manual is divided into sections that explain the different
parts of BCM. The descriptions of each section are followed by a
listing of the key strokes and mouse clicks that are available.
Keystrokes and mouse clicks are surrounded by "<" and ">". When two
keystrokes are listed next to each other, the function is activated by
pressing the first key combination and then the second.
Example:
<Ctrl-Q><D> means that you should hold down the <Ctrl> key and
press the <Q> key, let both keys up and then press the <D> key.
========
Hot Keys
========
<Hot Keys> are keys or combinations of keys that provide a shortcut
to many of BCM's functions. You'll find them in the Main Menu, Menu
Bars, Function Lines and DialogBoxes. On color monitors they are red and
on monochrome monitors they appear bright white. In some cases, merely
pressing the <Hot Key> is adequate. Other times, it must be pressed
while holding down the <Alt> or <Ctrl> key. Don't worry about some of
these terms because they are all discussed below.
============
The Menu Bar
============
When a Menu Bar is available, it appears near the top of the
screen and is identified by the word "Menu" at its far right end.

screen and looks similar to the Menu Bar. It is activated by clicking
on the desired item or by using the <Hot Keys> listed there.
--------------------------

Message Windows
===============
Message Windows give information and do not necessarily require any
action on your part. One place that you will see a Message Window is in
BCM File Maintenance; where, during the copying of a file, a Message
Window will tell you what file is being copied and displays a graph to
give you some idea of how far along you are in the copying process.
===========
Dialogboxes
===========
They will prompt you for input, which may be as simple as acknowl-
edging the information conveyed by the Dialogbox. They might also ask
6
you to type information on an Editline or select options by using Check
Boxes or Radio Buttons.
Pushbuttons are listed at the bottom of all Dialogboxes and are
used to tell BCM what you want done with the information. To activate
a pushbutton, simply <Left-Click> your mouse on it. You can also tab to
the pushbutton and press <Enter> or Hold down the <Alt> key and press
the listed <Hot Key>.
=============
Radio Buttons
=============
Radio Buttons allow you to select only one option in a list of
options. Each option is preceded by a set of rounded brackets and the
selected option is identified by a dot.
===========
Check Boxes
===========
Check Boxes are similar to Radio Buttons, except they allow the
selection of more than one alternative or option. They are identified
by a set of square brackets which may contain a capital X. The X
identifies the option as activated.

Getting Started
You should have the following two self-extracting files:
- 21BCM1.EXE (Main BCM program files)
- 21BCM2.EXE (BCM Editor, help files and documentation)
In the following instruction press the <Enter> key after typing the
described commands. If this is your first installation of BCM, create
a directory on your hard drive by typing:
MD C:\BCM (creates sub-directory BCM on drive C)
Note: BCM will run from any directory on any hard drive.
If you are updating BCM from an earlier version, you must erase all
the BCM program files currently in your BCM directory because many of
the earlier version files are not compatible with version 2.0.
If you are installing BCM from floppy drive A:
-Put the floppy disk containing 21BCM1.EXE in drive A.
-Type A:\21BCM1 C:\BCM (Extracts files into C:\BCM).
-Put the floppy disk containing 21BCM2.EXE in drive A.
-Type A:\21BCM2 C:\BCM.
Note: BCM can be installed from any drive.
Assuming that you installed BCM into C:\BCM, type:
C: (changes you to drive C)
CD \BCM (changes you to directory \BCM)
BCM (runs the BCM Menu System)
If you plan on using BCM's compression shell capabilities, make
sure that any or all of the following programs are in the same directory
as BCM:
-PKZIP.EXE..........PKZip file compression utility
-PKUNZIP.EXE........PKZip file decompression utility
-PKPAK.EXE..........PKPak file compression utility
-PKUNPAK.EXE........PKPak file decompression utility
-LHA.EXE............Lha file compression-decompression utility
-ARJ.EXE............ARJ file compression utility
The shareware version of these compression programs can be easily
obtained either on computer bulletin boards or through Shareware
vendors.
It is helpful to put BCM's path in your AUTOEXEC.BAT path statement
and add BCM at the end. This causes BCM to run each time you boot your
computer. Read Building a Menu to see how to setup the BCM Main Menu.
If you need help anywhere in BCM, press <F1> or consult the manual.

Setup
================
The Setup Screen
================
In the setup screen, there are two windows displayed side-by-side
with a Function Line at the bottom of the screen. The left window is
the Entry Window. The right window is the Directory Window.
----------------
The Entry Window
----------------
The Entry Window displays a list of menu item components. The
current menu or sub-menu is displayed at the top of the Entry Window.
Each item's title is entered into the Edit Line beside an Alpha Code
(capital letters A-Z). The Alpha Code identifies each menu item as
unique. Each item's path is entered below its title and into the Edit
Line beside the word "Path".
--------------------
The Directory Window
--------------------
The Directory Window is used as a quick and convenient way of
locating and entering the menu item paths. It lists the disk drives,
sub-directories and EXE, COM, and BAT files on your computer. The path
of the listed sub-directories and files is at the top of the window.
To locate a file, select the drive and subdirectory that the file
is in. The desired file will then appear in the Directory Windows list.
Selecting the file places the entire file's path into the last high-
lighted Menu Item's Path Edit Line.
The key strokes and mouse clicks are the same as in the Pick
Window. (See Pick Window Key Strokes and Mouse Clicks)
-----------------
The Function Line
-----------------
The following Setup functions are available through the Function
Line:
Exit Setup <Alt-X>
------------------
*Exit Setup program and return to the BCM Menu
Insert Menu Item <F2>
---------------------
*Insert blank line for the entry of a new menu item
Delete Menu Item <F3>
---------------------
*Delete selected menu item
12
Move Menu Item <F4>
-------------------
*Move menu item to another location
Create/Go To a Sub-Menu <F5>
----------------------------
*Display or create a sub-menu
Previous Sub-Menu <F6>
----------------------
*Go to previous sub-menu
Create/Modify a Password <F7>
-----------------------------
*Enter passwords for menu items or blank them out to delete them
Menu Item Options <F8>
----------------------
*Disable Control-C
+Disable Control-C during application switching. This can
prevent the user from leaving BCM by pressing <CTRL-C> during
program switching.
*Pause After Application
BCM Menu Setup <F9>
-------------------
*Menu Caption
+Allows you to enter a caption that will appear at the top of
the BCM Menu.
*Screen Blanktime
+Allows you to set the amount of time the main menu will wait
before it blanks the screen. Striking any key, after the
screen is blank, brings back the main menu screen. The
default time is 5 minutes. Screen blanking is disabled if
you enter 0 minutes.
*Override Password
+May be used to override any password in the system. To use
the override password in the main menu, type "override" when
you are prompted for the password. You will then be prompted
for the override password.
*Exit Password
+If set, the exit password will be needed to exit BCM and
return to the DOS prompt.
*Filer Password
+If set, the filer password will be needed to access the BCM
File Maintenance program.
*Setup Password
+If Set, the setup password will be needed to access the BCM
Setup program.
13
*Use Alpha Code
+If set, the Alpha Code will be the <Hot Key> for each menu
item. Otherwise, the first letter of the menu item title
will be the <Hot Key>.
+If not set, the first letter of each menu item's title will
be the <Hot Key> for that item. If there are two or more
menu item titles with the same first letter, the <Hot Key>
will only cycle through the possible menu item titles. You
must then press <Enter> to select the desired menu item.
+As an example:
Given the menu item titles "Word Processing" and "World
Almanac", pressing <W> will only cycle between the two.
You must then press <Enter> to select the desired menu
item.
===============
Building a Menu
===============
When you first run BCM, a window will appear to inform you that you
must run BCM Setup and create a menu. Also, the menu that appears,
tells you that there was no menu found. Select Menu Setup at the BCM
Main Menu screen. The BCM Setup screen will appear. Each menu item can
either be assigned a filename and path or it can be assigned a sub-menu.
If it is assigned a filename, that filename will be executed when that
menu item is selected from the BCM Main Menu. If it is assigned a sub-
menu, by selecting Sub-Menu from the Function Line, an empty list of
menu items will be displayed. Again, each menu item can be assigned a
filename and path or a sub-menu. You can create sub-menus up to six
deep from the main menu.
When you exit Menu Setup, all menus and sub-menus will be automati-
cally stored and loaded when you return to the BCM Main Menu.

program name and version. The Menu Caption follows; and below that is
a Pick Window containing a list of the menu item titles, called the Menu
Window. The Menu Window is followed by the date and time, four Dialog
Buttons and Copyright information.
The BCM Menu Screen is used in the same way a Dialogbox is
used. For more information see the sections on PickWindows and
Dialogboxes.
---------------
The Menu Window
---------------
The Menu Window always displays the menu item titles in one menu or
sub-menu. Selecting a menu item title causes the associated application
to be run. If the menu item title is associated with a sub-menu, the
new sub-menu will be displayed.

Tool #1 is always the Virus Scanner. When the Virus Scanner is
selected, BCMF checks the selected compressed file to find out what
compression method was used to compress it. It then uses the appropri-
ate compression program (LHA, PKZIP, PKUNZIP, ARJ, etc.) to extract the
files into a temporary directory. It then activates your virus program
to check the files in the temporary directory. After your virus program
has reported its finding, BCMF erases the temporary directory.

compression program (i.e. PKZIP/PKUNZIP). In this case,
the extraction filename should be supplied. If the
extraction and compression are handled by the same
program (i.e LHA) then supply same filename that is in
the Compress Name field.
+Use List File
>Most compression/extraction programs allow the use of a
list file that contains a list of filenames to be
extracted or compressed. If this is the case, select
this option.
+The commands
>The commands can be customized to your needs. (See each
compression program's manual before resetting these
options.
*Tool Setup

tool, simply supply the full path and filename of each tool's
executable file in the Edit Line to the left. In the Edit
Line to the right, supply the program's parameters. You can
send a filename to the tool by typing a tilde (~) in the
parameters line, at the spot in the command line, that you
want the last highlighted filename placed.
Example:
Tool #2 #2 Parameters

The BCM Editor
==============
The BCM Editor
==============
The BCM Editor is the text editor that is distributed with the BCM
Menu System and cannot be distributed separately. It can be used to
create and modify ASCII files.
The BCM Editor can be used from File Maintenance by highlighting
the file to edited and selecting Edit from the Menu Bar or Function
Line. To use it from the DOS command line, just type "BCMED" followed
by the path of the file that you wish to edit. That file will then be
displayed in the text screen. If no path is entered or the path is
invalid, a blank text screen will be shown and no filename will appear
at the top of the text screen.
The BCM Editor has a hidden clipboard that you can cut or copy text
to and paste text from. Once text has been copied/cut to the clipboard,
the text remains there until either new text is copied/cut to it or you
exit BCMED.
The size of the file that the BCM Editor can edit is limited only
by the amount of available base memory.
=====================
The BCM Editor Screen
=====================
At the top of the screen is the Title Bar. Below the Title Bar is
the Menu Bar and the Text Screen. The name of the file being edited is
displayed at the top of the Text Screen and a scroll bar is on the
right hand bottom. At the bottom of the screen is the status line. The
status line displays the line and column numbers of the cursor, tab mode
(fix/smt), insert mode (ins/ovr), indent (on/off), wordwrap (on/off) and
the word "SAVE" (if the file has been modified).

Questions & Answers
Q. I accidentally erased my "BCM.BAT" file. Do I have to go through
the installation process again?
A. No. Go to the directory that BCM is installed on and activate it
by typing "BCMM". Then Exit BCM. If BCM can't locate the
"BCM.BAT" file, it will create one. You can now restart BCM by
typing BCM.
Q. I typed "BCM" and BCM did not activate. What can I do?
A. You probably either corrupted or erased the "BCM.BAT" file. Go
to your BCM directory and attempt to locate the "BCM.BAT" file. If
located, delete it. Whether or not you found it, follow the
instructions above for creating the "BCM.BAT" file.
Q. How do I quickly get from one filename to another within the
directory windows?
A. Entering a letter puts the cursor on the first filename that begins
with that letter. Also entering a period puts the cursor on the
parent directory (..) and entering a left square bracket ([) puts
the cursor on the first drive in the list. Repeatedly entering
the same character cycles the cursor among filenames beginning with
the same letter.
