ADDITIONAL NOTES FOR THE "RU" RTTY UTILITY
This program is a slightly modified from the original RTTYU program
by KF4NB. It's operation is mentioned in the documentation for his
RTTY program on this system.
Changes to look for are:
1) Prompt for drive that has pix; with "B" being the default. Simply
hitting enter will save having to type the "B:" every time when
printing pix. If you want to override the default type "d:", with
"d" being the desired drive.
2) Request for pix size - with "Small" being the default. This results
in a much better picture. The matrix printers used are rather thin
in putting ink on paper so the pix that look OK on a Teletype
machine look weak and washed out on the IBM Grafix printer. In the
Small (default) mode the pix look great!
This change simply sends a printer modification command before the
pix is printed. The command will set the printer to compressed
print and 6/72 " line spacing (I think). This makes for a nice
tight pix that looks fantastic. If you have another type of printer
that can't handle this, use Full for full size pix or modify the
basic RU program to suit your printer, and recompile. The basic
version runs very slow with out compiling.
3) When the quote (') is sent I suppressed the corresponding "BELL" or
annoying beep. Some pix have thousands of 's in them and running
thru a pix can make the computer more annoying than the old noisy
TTY machines we just got rid of!
4) Not a change - just a note: When you save a file you will be
prompted for additional info regarding compression. If you say
Yes then the file will be saved as compressed data. I have found
that most pix will shrink to 50% of the original size. This depends
how many redundant characters there are in a pix, of course.
Another note, you can send the compressed pix right from your RTTY
program as it will un-compress it as it is sent out. NOT necessary
to un-compress with RU and then send it with RTTY.
5) For this program to operate correctly, a received RTTY pix must have
been received with the RTTY program in "ART" mode. This is done with
the ALT-A key while the RTTY program is running, but before a pix
has started to be received. Of course, you will have hit F3 to
receive a file to disk!
A file that has been properly received for RTTY ART will have special
characters added to each line for carriage control and line feed
control. Those characters are listed below.
Backwards "P" or paragraph symbol will cause a LINE FEED
The "vertical arrows" will cause a carriage return.
Note that if the pix has overline printing there will be the
vertical arrows without the backwards P. This of course, will
cause a carriage return with no line feed. The result is over-
striking capability.
6) File sizes are listed below. Use to verify that the download
is OK. This size should show up on a directory list on your PC.
RU.BAS - 5338 bytes
RU.EXEBIN - 22784
PARMS.RTY - 175
GARFIELD.PIX - 7629
TUMBLWEE.PIX - 6779
"Happy Pix" - de W9HLQ
