READ BUFFER
When you read a file into PC-TYPE+, only parts of your file are read
in at a time. They are converted into a better format for PC-TYPE+ to
use, and then another part is read from disk. The bigger the pieces
which can be read, the fewer reads have to be made from your disk.
These pieces are read into an area in PC-TYPE+ called its Read Buffer.
The bigger the Read Buffer, the fewer reads will be made from your
disk, and the faster the file will be loaded. On the other hand, the
bigger you make this buffer, the less memory will be available to use
for editing large files or a number of files at the same time.
You may modify the size of this read buffer in a sub-panel to the
MODIFY DEFAULTS panel labelled "Size of Read Buffer" by moving the
Option Selection Bar to this field and then pressing F10. (You get to
the MODIFY DEFAULTS panel by pressing F8 and then F2).
Press the PgDn Key
Read Buffer (Continued)
If you do modify the size of the Read Buffer, the change will not
become effective during the current session. You must first make the
modified defaults permanent (see the HELP file DFLTS_SV), exit
PC-TYPE+, and then re-enter.
If you do a lot of work with multiple files, you will probably find
that the 4K - 6K setting is reasonable. If you work with large files
or you work mainly off of floppies, you may want to try a higher
setting. If you normally use small files and seldom edit more than
one file at a time, a lower setting of 1K or 2K is probably fine.
There is no right answer - just use what seems to work the best for
you.
