- <f1><c000> The Mysterious Bird
- Still on the wing!
- <f0> article dedicated to the exceptional atari dream-machine
-
- written by Grey / Mystic Bytes
-
- to celebrate a 10 golden years of Atari Falcon existence!
- ----------------------------------------------------------------- -- - --- ----
-
- Gossshhh... Could you believe it? It's already 10 years after this cool machine
- left the hands of Atari engineers and Jack Tramiel's factory! It was their last
- computer but surely one of the most successful ones, even if it wasn't sold in
- the quantities it surely deserved. What failed? The policy of (almost
- non-existant) advertising. Atari was sure that "good hardware is able to sell
- itself". Well, I could agree with it if were not for the brutal reality... It's
- not a sweet cartoon, it's a place of the battle - you have fight to survive.
- Atari made an excellent weapon to fight with enemies but... wasn't able to
- shoot with it - even if the target was so easy to destroy... Someone should
- slap Mr Tramiel for it :o(
-
- Atari also didn't supply too much ammunition, if we hold this metaphor. Ammo
- means software. Yeah, there were some serious tools, but mainly showing the
- top class music possibilities of sample-recording, midi etc. But almost nothing
- to attract the potential gamers... There was probably one or two exceptions
- just like a preview of "Space Junk" making *extremely* cool impression - this
- game would became an absolutely *smashing-hit*, no doubt! However, the Falcon
- needed more projects like this...
-
- Month after month, the Falcon became a more mysterious machine. It was a mine
- of possibilities but... still undiscovered yet. Paradoxically, thanx to that,
- the Falcon was even more respected :o) Everybody knew about dreaming potential
- inside this box and kept their eyes wide open to see anyone trying to dig them
- out! Who could make it better if not the Falcon demo scene? :o) The first demos
- started to show up, like Warum from Lazer for example. We could taste this
- power, it was a new quality of atari demos, rather unknown for us in that
- time... Finally, the Falcon flew high! The next demos brought other unforgotten
- impressions... There was huge abyss between the ST and Falcon visible now!
-
- From this moment everything became clear - the Falcon is an excellent machine
- for professional music recording, midi and... sceners! :o) And thanx to the
- community of the demo scene, the Falcon survived. They decided to take things
- into their own hands, seeing that this powerful machine became pissed off by
- her own creators... A short time later we could see various Falcon games
- released, professional graphic tools like "Apex"... The community of the demo
- scene simply started to fill the gaps...
-
- I think it was an exceptional feeling to know that all depends on themselves.
- Simply, the future of the Falcon lay in their hands! And this machine became
- one of the friendliest ones, without any kind of commercial feeling!
-
- The demo scene survived 'til today... so the Falcon did! Latest releases from
- EIL perfectly show what this machine is really capable of... Let's prepare
- ourselves for the forthcoming EIL edition which will surely let our Falcons
- fly even higher! :o)
-
- Remember:- as long as the scene exist - Falcon will be still on the wing!
