- Over the years, our SanTa brought us a lot of surprises, sometimes very
- unexpectly! Let's borrow Santa's sledge to have a short trip through the
- twisted way of Atari history...

- :::::::::::: ATARI XL/XE - FEEL THE MADNESS ::::::::::::
-
- Who doesn't know this machine? Yeah, it's the same small grey-box from the
- 80's, with 6502 heartbeats. The 8-bit Atari was one of the machines that wasn't
- treated well or taken seriously by it's opponents. The C-64 and Speccy
- community loudly laughed at the capabilities of the XL/XE series, blaming the
- machine for poor games uncomparable to their "cool ones". We didn't agree with
- their opinion, but we had to face one very sad fact - 8-bit Atari seemed to be
- ignored by big software publishers. We couldn't play as many "smash-hits" known
- on other systems, such as Robocop, Dizzy, North and South... Many people
- switched to the other machines supplying new arrays of the enemy. Only die-hard
- Atarians survived, some of them decided to hide their machine deep in the
- wardrobe waiting for better times. Their eternal answer for the spiteful
- opponents were words like:
-
- "we'll see who will win this battle!"
-
- Their patience became prized a few years later! At the beginning of the 90's,
- the 8-bit Atari came back to life with a flood of new fantastic releases! Since
- this moment another era knocked on the Atari's door. New games featured neat
- graphics, great POKEY tunes and cool playability! Opponents lost orientation in
- things happening! In the space of one year, this "ridicilious and poor machine"
- became respected and won the battle so easily.
-
- "Isn't it Ironic? Don't You Think?"
-
- New software companies started to grow on the XL/XE market like mushrooms after
- rain, in a time when the C-64 and ZX Spectrum markets shrunk at terrific speed.
- The 8-bit Atari community didn't have to cry for many smashin' hits known
- before from these systems, no... why's that? Because Atarians could play such
- kewl games as faithful conversions of "Another World", "Lemmings",
- "Civilisation" (Cywilizacja), "Storm Lord" (Darkness Hour), "Operation Blood"
- (Operation Wolf), "Dizzy" (Wloczykij)...
-
- Who did Atari owe this respect? The faihful Atari scene. Many people worked
- hard to prove that this machine hid a lot of undiscovered or properly used
- features! Their target had been reached - Atari survived and they could keep
- dreaming...
-
- Is it possible to inject such kind of behaviour to the ST scene for example?
- Of course it is! Lost respect of the Atari XL/XE has been re-built from the
- foundation. This community worked very strenuously to recover the reputation.
- They started from the beginning, writing new tools to create a new quality of
- software. And they achieved great success!
-
- The demo scene showed everyone what this machine was *REALLY* cabale of... The
- creators of the XL/XE series wouldn't believe what their babe was now able to
- show! Atari definitely won this battle.
-
-
- ::::::::: GO FORWARD ST SCENE! ::::::::::
-
- Don't look back, look forward! Nothing is lost, look at the XL/XE scene! There
- is always time for resurrection! Our beloved ST isn't such an old baSTard,
- this machine has a chance to survive! Look at the Amiga 500 users. It seems
- that the ST scene, even if gathers only a small amount of members, is still
- stronger than the community of our main rival A500!
-
- I still remember their awful 4chn *.mod poking fun on ST that "this machine
- has possibilities of Spectrum" and "it's our pride". But now 8-bit Atari
- community plays this *.mod using their small grey-boxes proving that spitting
- on anyone can be very dangerous - it can change the direction...
