- <f1><c000> when dreams become nightmares<f0>
- collectin' the remnants of the ruin
- - by Grey / Mystic Bytes -
- ------------------------------------------------------------------ - - --- ----
-
- Everyone dreams... Sometimes dreams come true... sometimes they fall into a
- deep vacuum. Like one of mine... Here is a bit of a sad story about one of my
- biggest disappointments - the fading of the Polish ST/Falcon scene in leaps and
- bounds.
-
- In the previous issue of Chosneck, I wrote that nothing had happened at all
- 'coz we didn't expect ANY Falcon crew to be born in the polish wasteland. And
- that we should just be happy for the remnants which are left. That's true, but
- I am not able to forget that our scene could grow in power. So what happened?
-
- So let's take a closer look!
-
-
- ----- - - ------------------------------------------------------ - - - --
- A.D. 1994, the birth of performing dream
- ---------- - - - ----------------------------------------- - - -- -------
-
- I don't remember the exact date of the day, but one of my friends sent me a
- copy of a new Atari XL/XE production. It was the "INTEL OUTSIDE" demo released
- by "OUR 5OFT" - Gods of the code-skills, creators of various high quality demos
- and games for this system. It was a great demo, no doubt, bringing some fresh
- air, effects known from 16 bits and x-cellent Pokey tunes. But why do I mention
- that? Well, in the credits part, we could read the following message from a
- coder known as Pirx: "it's our last 8-bit Atari release" - gosh! c'mon! them
- too?! This broke me down completely... What a huge loss... At that time a lot
- of people from the 8-bit Atari scene turned out to be traitors, moving to such
- systems as the PC and pissing off their activity on the beloved (at least in
- the past) XL/XE systems. Also the loading screen didn't bring any better news,
- made in the form of the Amiga OS (a hand which holds the WB disk). So after
- reading words telling us it's their last Atari release, I was under no
- illusions. I thought "oh yeah, another chaps sell their fuji soul"! Dammit. But
- wait!. A short time later when the txt was movin' up, I read something that
- cheered me up a bit. At least one of the most respected Atari crews didn't
- decide to leave us for a system from another family! They gladly invited us to
- watch out for their forthcoming Falcon releases :o) Wowness! That wa s a great
- sign to the existing 8-bit Atari scene - there IS an alternative apart from Ami
- or peezee! "OUR 5OFT" wore the path for other paratroopers from the 8-bit Atari
- scene. So the chance for unfolding the Falcon's wings over the Polish
- wastelands became more likely!- this thought was drilling my naive young head.
- It appeared that it was a small world as my friend known as Gandalf (the polish
- producer of the 1st turbo-card for the Falcon) knew Pirx pretty well! He even
- sent him his first effects e.g. textured vector objects. Not so bad for a
- beginning to be honest! Some water had swum into the ocean before "OUR 5OFT"
- appealed to other crews to follow their footsteps. The Falcon became the
- powerful mystic machine, everyone was talking about this newest Atari babe,
- respected it's possibilities and so on. And if not for the cost(which prevented
- many sceners laying their hands on it - as I know from experience) we could be
- witness to massive Atari 8-bit paratroopers fallin' into the Falcon's clutches!
- (e.g. Pet from Bit Busters, the code-wizard who didn't manage to find enough
- money to become a lucky Falcon user).
-
-
- "SHADOWS" - One of the most respected crews decided to open a Falcon
- section. Even if "OUR 5OFT" was the 1st group wishing to
- release something for the Falcon, "SHADOWS" was the 1st group
- which DID release something, instead of just saying it. It was
- the "FIRESTARTER" demo, given to the demo compo at QuaST party
- '96.
-
- What happened: the musician of Shadows sold his Falcon and
- since then, the group faded away completely from
- the scene. Some time later it came to light that
- they moved to the... peezee's shitland. There
- was a rumour spread around that Cedyn and Yonek
- were going to release another Falcon demo under
- the "Freezers" label, but, due to internal
- conflicts it, was impossible...
-
-
- "COBRA" - Maybe not a groundbreaking demo-team, but respected for various
- releases and contribution to the 8-bit Atari scene. They also
- decided to open the Falcon section and one year later we could
- see their debut with a 128KB dentro given to the intro-compo at
- QuaST party '97.
-
-
- What happened: Cobra died after the hundreds splits in their
- memberlist (entering groups like Whelpz,
- Underground, Aids...). The only active members
- seem to be Mayonez and MacGyver doing some stuff
- on 8-bit Atari. Winio doesn't have motivation to
- code on the Falcon anymore. However, he mentions
- sometimes the possibility of releasing another
- multi-part demo with brand-new effects if he
- finds some spare time.
-
-
- "CONFUSIONS" - They showed up suddenly and unexpectedly on the ST scene with
- a little intro featuring shade-bobs... Since Sqward, the ex-C64
- coder, bought the ST and decided to release his productions
- under the "CNF" label, this group became famous and started to
- gain respect. Sqward's first babe was the "AMOK" demo with
- various effects never seen before on the ST scene.
-
- What happened: Sqward decided to co-operate with Mystic Bytes
- as well and finally left "CNF" due to the
- internal conflicts.
-
-
- "EXCELLENT - (known before as Pentagram group) Also one of the most
- TEAM" promising groups following the in the footsteps of the SHADOWS.
- Van Eijk, the main organizer of famous QuaST parties, promissed
- that the winner of 1st place in the XL/XE demo compo would get
- a Falcon for a prize in the official invitation. Their hard
- work turned out to be worth the effort, 'coz they reached the
- podium! Even before laying hands on the prize, they started to
- think out about their activity on this machine! Surprisingly,
- the organizer suddenly and brutally dashed their dreams by
- tellingthem with drawn smile on his face that instead of
- winning the Falcon he decided to give them... his used STe. In
- one second all their plans seemed to fizzle out.But they didn't
- give up and warned Van Eijk that if they didn't get the
- promised prize they would spread the fact over the Atari scene.
- It thankfully worked out and Van Eijk probably felt something
- hot inside his pants 'coz he decided to give his own Falcon
- (together with lotsa source routines... e.g. almost finished
- X-Tris game).
-
- What happened: after this weird battle they announced the 1st
- release - a music disk containing various *.XMs
- composed by one of their musicians. And another
- problem appeared - there was lack of a good
- quality *.XM replayer on the Falcon :o( Seeing
- this and being very disappointed they started
- desperately looking for help. And because they
- didn't receive any help from anyone they decided
- to cancel the project :o( All that was left were
- a couple simple effects... Since the time of
- this defeat there has been no life-signs from
- them... What a pity, huh?
-
-
- "PANDEMONIUM" - (known before as HIGH VOLTAGE) The founder of this group,
- Darth, seemed to be a big Falcon enthusiast. We could read in
- his XL/XE release "Entrance of Dragon" that he was looking
- forward to get this machine into his hands 'coz he was very
- excited about the drowsing possibilities! Their entrance to the
- Falcon scene became reality with the release of the "IGNIS"
- demo, a contribution to the demo-compo at SILIconvention '97.
-
- What happened: Paradoxically, Darth seems to be still
- Falcon-addicted. However... he sold his Falcon
- last year. He explains he was "forced" to do it
- 'coz of his financial situation. He still keeps
- saying and believing he'll back on the Falcon
- scene 'coz he has to show the atari scene what
- he's REALLY capable of :o)
-
-
- "SYNTAX" - the miracle of the polish ST scene. Yoyo quickly turned out to
- be the most promising ST coder, bringing lotsa fresh air and
- new trends into the old-fashioned sleepy ST scene. Their 1st
- serious release was the "Reanimation" demo, entered in the
- Atari demo-compo at InterJam '98. The latest project they were
- working on was "Killer demo 2000" which has been loudly
- announced as the absolute ground-breaker never seen on the ST
- scene so far.
-
- What happened: The graphician Klocek lost all contact with
- Yoyo who seemed to disappear to an unknown place
- without giving any explanation :o(
-
-
- "QUAST CLUB" - founded by Van Eijk, mainly known from organizing the
- traditional Atari parties during every summer holiday, but
- also as a main editor of "QuaST Magazine". He also did a lot
- of small intros for the ST as well as a big demo. When he
- became a lucky Falcon user, he started to think about
- releasing a special version of his magazine using the
- possibilities of the new machine.
-
-
- What happened: Finally Van Eijk began work on a Falcon game
- called "X-Tris", with graphics made in an
- X-files style. This project has been roughly
- cancelled 'coz Van Eijk gave his Falcon away as
- a prize in the 8-bit Atari demo-compo at QuaST
- party '97.
-
-
- "MYSTIC BYTES" - built from the remnants of the Shadows and Confusions
- demo-groups. The main coder of this group entered the Falcon
- demo-scene with the (almost) never-ending 4ktro named
- "Surprise!" which became a big success.
-
- Currently the only active Atari demo-group in Poland with
- lotsa projects and a bright future concerning activity in the
- scene.
-
-
- I won't mention older ST groups 'coz it would be rather senseless... They
- existed much earlier and died...
-
-
- ----- - - - ---------------------------------------------- - - -- - ----
- WEIRD RELUCTANCE OF 8-BIT ATARI SCENE TO DO SOMETHING ON ST
- -- - - - - --------------------------------------------------- - - - ---
-
- Differently to the Falcon, the ST wasn't a respected machine in the 8-bit Atari
- scene. The Falcon was impressive, mysterious and magic. The ST was... a
- nightmare. "Everything but not ST" - 8-bit Atari sceners repeated. I've been
- talking with various people about this topic - they simply didn't like the ST
- scene. Why? Because of the quality of the demos seen - horrible YM sounds,
- old-fashioned design "watching each screen by entering the door" or "press
- space to see another effect". The ST scene wasn't highly thought of by the
- 8-bit Atari community. It was a "respectless and hopeless" system...
-
- Some respected coders wanted to take things in their hands and try to change a
- bad picture of the ST. Due to unknown reasons, this always collapsed:
-
- - Konop from Shadows
-
- Became an STe user after winning the 1st place in 8-bit Atari demo-compo at
- QuaST party '96. He announced that the 1st effect he's going to code on ST
- would be a torus with lotsa faces. Nothing seen...
-
- - Seban from Slight
-
- A famous XL/XE coder responsible for various hi-quality prods. He was an STe
- user, busy reading the books concerning coding on these systems. Dunno if
- something left his hands... There was a rumour spread around that he simply
- gave up.
-
- - Darth from Pandemonium
-
- Known from his activities on the XL/XE and Falcon scenes. Before Darth became
- a Falcon user, he tried his luck with ST coding. He mentioned something about
- the horrible troubles with making such simple effects as scrolling parts of
- the screen. No releases...
-
-
- Maybe there could have been a chance for a strong polish ST scene if such
- releases as those seen in the last 3 years would have showed up earlier. I
- guess it could help many people believe it's not only a problem of the hardware
- but a poor approach to the subject.
-
-
- ------- - - -- ----------------------------------------------------------
- A.D. 2000, suddenly something started to screw up
- ----- - --------- --------------- --------------------------- - - -------
-
- A.D. 2000 was noticed as the beginning of the fading of the polish ST/Falcon
- scene. Releases shrinkin' to zero at a terrible speed, no motivation, no
- nothing... The only serious survivors turned out to be Mystic Bytes and such
- single persons as Monsoft, RafalK or Grzegorz Pawlik. The Polish scene of today
- is only a blurred shadow...
-
- But you know what?
-
- I AM STILL DREAMING... :o)
