- We've a big bunch of David Gahans here in Poland. Our country is probably one
- of the centers for DM - fans. Back in the 80's there were huge fan conventions
- that had been host to hundreds of people. Are these golden years gone forever?
- Though nowadays we have techno conventions instead, DM's gig in Poland was a
- success with tickets sold out in a week.
-
- -> Is "Exciter" such a great album? <-
-
- Yes, it is. It's ideal for "night listening". When I was listening to it for
- the first time I didn't get it. This album requires silence, just like
- Beethoven's symphonies. You need to get in the proper mood to synchronise with
- David Gahan's voice. The mood becomes proper after about 4-5 tracks :) Exciter
- is basically filled with very beautiful, silent music and only "Dream On" and
- "I Feel Loved" are different, much more "noisy". Is this a pop music?
- A rock? Anything else? Music on the latest Depeche Mode album is a mixture of
- different styles. You can hear ambient, trip-hop and pop music. "Shine" for
- example is based on a background very similiar to the sounds that can be heared
- on Massive Attack's Mezzanine. Exciter seems to me like a logical developement
- of DM's previous album "Ultra". And, oh yes, one thing is important. This album
- should be listened to as a whole. Forget about the "shuffle" function in your
- CD-player. Forget it. There are a few bands that can play melodies, just fine
- melodies and arrange them properly to get beautiful compositions. Depeche Mode
- (or should I say "Martin Gore"?) is one of them. "Freelove" for example. Subtle
- leitmotiv, delicate guitar in the background and these words:
-
- "No hidden catch, na strings attached, just freelove". Pure beauty. If you miss
- songs like that, "Exciter" is just for you.
