- Grey: 'llo, python! =)
-
- Winio: Hey, what da fuck?! What python? If it's allusion to the name of the
- group then I have to admit it wasn't my idea. It's the remaining of
- the old XL/XE section yet.
-
- Grey: Ha, you became a famous bastard :) It's cool to lead this interview
- with someone who drunk the ocean of vodka with me at several parties!
- But before we start with the scene-stuff, tell us something about
- your real-life.
-
- Winio: Hmm, well. Small rectification at the beginning. First of all there
- was no ocean of vodka, usual it was beer or cheap wine. But it's the
- history since about two years. Drinking to the limits isn't funny for
- me anymore, I know better manners to spend my free time. And now,
- when I am not interested about the scene these days my life isn't
- really different than the rest of my friends. I spend a lot of time
- with my girlfriend, I am studying at University in Olsztyn, "from
- time to time" I am writing the little programs for RISC micro-
- controlers. Of course I don't forget about my friends (mainly the
- old sceners) so we meet together sometimes. I am not able to meet
- with them too often because most of them moved to other cities or
- work and don't have a lot of free time.
-
- Grey: How Your history with Atari begun? When did You buy Your 1st fuji
- box? And what model it was?
-
- Winio: I first saw Atari whern I was six. It was a 65XE model at the home of
- my father's friend. I was very excited seeing River Raid. Oh well, I
- could play that game through a whole day and I didn't ever get bored.
- Recent games in spite of the great graphics and sounds effects lose
- the battle (I mean mainly about playability) so I don't play many
- games these days. But let's back to the subject... Since that time my
- dream was to become user of Atari. My friends from the school warmed
- up the situation telling only about new games. And it happend. It was
- October in 1991 when my grandmother b ought me my first dreamed of
- computer. Of course there was no chat about any other machine than
- Atari. Even if it's hard to believe it today, you couldn't see other
- computers in polish homes than Atari. The model I've got was a 130XE
- with tape-drive because floppy-drive at that time was a big luxurious
- purchase and cost almost as much as the computer.
-
- Grey: What's Your current machine? And do You still use it?
-
- Winio: Currently I have a PC with a configuration which excites only a laugh
- It's a K5 90MHz with 16MB of RAM. As well as the PC I also have a
- Falcon, but I haven't run it for about 1.5 year. Last time I did it,
- I was putting together the parts of my latest demo called "REVERTANT"
-
- Grey: I remember You as the real Atari fan who fought for the good name of
- those computers. You even wrote a very long letter to one of the most
- famous computer-magazines in that time "Bajtek" to kick someone for
- blaming Atari. It was even publicated in this mag! Could You tell our
- readers why You decided to write this letter?
-
- Winio: I wrote my letter to the "Bajtek" editors team in reply to the
- article about the Atari Jaguar. One guy from this magazine wrote a
- real nonsense article about the Jag. After reading this shit you
- could get the impression that main heart of the Jaguar was 68000. Of
- course I understand the reason of this article - they did their best
- to support the PC market. It's not a secret that they've got a lot of
- cash from the PC distributors thanks to the adverts which kept them
- alive on the market. And unfortunately Atari shops weren't interested
- about advertising their products in magazines. (yes, it's true, they
- kept telling us that a good system doesn't need any advert - grey's
- note).
-
- Grey: Maybe not everyone knows but Your function in Cobra was "swapper" for
- quite a long time. I remember our talk at Siliconevntion '97 when You
- said "I wish I could code... ". Short time later there was "a little"
- split in Cobra and You stood alone on the battle place. I remember
- ironic smiles of other ex-members who asked You: "So, Winio, when's
- the new Cobra demo coming out? ". Making a demo without any coder
- could be "rather" impossible... But short before Last Party we could
- see the invitro for the Falcon coded by... Swapper! Or rather...
- ex-swapper, Winio :)) And all attenders (including ex-Cobra members)
- of this party could see Your 1st multi-part demo for the Falcon! So
- it looks like You learnt how to code mainly to cut these "ironic
- smiles" and kick some ass! Am I right? :P
-
- Winio: Yes. Situation in Cobra was following: coders did NOTHING and later
- they blamed me that Cobra isn't active. Later they left the group
- to join another one. And of course they still didn't make anything
- until now. I stood in group alone. But thanks to the mates from PC
- scene (Ooze, God) I managed to learn ASM coding and I started to
- create "something".
-
- Grey: What about Your 1st ST demo You were going to release few Years ago?
- At the beginning it was titled "Silent Breaker" and was supposed to
- be released at QuaST '98 but Mayonez, the major coder of this project
- lost the code sources. So he started again, code was growing up and
- the demo has been retitled to "Awaken" and the short preview we could
- see at EIL '99. And as someone told me there is no chance to see it
- 'coz Mayonez lost all disks with sources again. What the hell is
- going on?! Is it all true? Did he ever hear about "backups?" It looks
- pretty strange - code something just to lose all short time later....
- He didn't take this project too serious or what?
-
- Winio: The fact is that Mayonez has bad luck. On the small Atari (we call
- XE/XE serie s like that in Poland - grey's note) he also lost many
- code sources. Even lately his PC hard disk fucked up. But the problem
- doesn't lay only in code. If not for the lack of time he surely could
- make a demo. Now, when he begun the his studies he doesn't have any
- free time.
-
- Grey: And what's the current status of Cobra? Is there ANY chance to see
- anything new from You guys? (tell me honestly...). Could You come
- back sometime maybe?
-
- Winio: I don't know if there is any point. Everything stays in one place.
- For some time the Atari scene time didn't move, it stayed in the same
- place where others were 5-6 years ago. And I don't mean only about
- the configuration (take a look what people make with small Atari) but
- about the human MENTALITY. Isolation from the rest of the scene and
- concentrating too much on effects like the "tunnel" to me, means
- there is no reason to make anything at Atari scene. This is as well
- as a lack of time..
-
- Grey: Is there anything You don't like on Atari scene? Like people attitude
- or something?
-
- Winio: Yes. I simply hate the attitude of most Atarians. If someone tells me
- that people from PC are bad because they support Microsoft or protest
- against showing C-64 demos at Atari party then I simply wonder if
- such person is NORMAL. I was growing up on the Atari scene and my
- behaviour was similar - until I didn't drive at the multi party and I
- didn't meet people from other scenes.
-
- Grey: Hmm, let's finish this article with something happier.. When did You
- last masturbate?
-
- Winio: Before the interview.
-
- Grey: Thanx for Your time! Please, come back to us sometime!
-
- Winio: No, "Thank you for the time" but tell me when you'll drive over to me
- and we get a chance to drink something? Because now you make me a
- fool..
