Well,
in my old records collection i came across
some ZTT albums that were printed here in Israel
by HED ARZI record company, which had the
Island license in Israel.
And the winners are:
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Welcome To The Pleasuredome (LP)
1984 IL (Island/Hed Arzi 2xBAN ZTT IQ1)
[record 1 marked 2xBAN ZTT IQ1 (1)
and record 2 marked 2xBAN ZTT IQ1 (2)]
Propaganda
A Secret Wish
1985 IL (Island/Hed Arzi BAN ZTT IQ3)
The ZTT Collection
("Nothing Is Comic. Everything Is Comic")
1985 IL (Island/Hed Arzi BAN IQ6) (ZTT isn`t marked on cat. no.)
(yello/red sun Island label on record)
I`m happy to join Israel to the ZTT discography.
Shalom and best wishes.

This is the release described in the discography:
12": 1985 UK (ZTT; 12 ZTPS 01 {A-4U}{B-4U}) [Feb 85; grey promo sleeve]
7:15 Closely, Closely (Enough's Enough)
10:17 Moments In Love
3:29 A Time To Hear (Who's Listening)
...except in the commercial sleeve, obviously. I actually have this in the
commercial sleeve as well -- the entry's in the "working" copy of the
discography that's sitting on my hard drive at the moment, and which I'll be
taking some vacation time to work on in a couple of weeks. Your copy is very
*slightly* different from mine in that one can't read the last digits of the
matrix numbers on mine; there's the vaguest hint of a "2" on the A-side and a
little cluster of dots you might interpret as a "4" spun 135 degrees to the
right if you've been outside picking out star constellations for a few hours
on the B-side.
I don't think this pressing is particularly unusual, but given the maze of
different releases out there for this single, who can say for sure?

Hi guys!
Last Thursday I saw a short live interview with Nick Warren from 'Way Out
West'. (It took place aside an over-commercialaised kiddy mega-rave in
Germany called 'Mayday', on which he was going to be DJ-ing later in the
morning.)
So here's what he said, when asked what's to expect from him next
[quoted from memory]:
Warren: "... in Summer the Way Out West album is coming out, and then..."
Interviewer: "What?!..."
Warren: "The new Way Out West album!"
Interviewer: "Oh... yes!"
Warren: "And then we're gonna work on the new Art Of Noise single with Trevor
Horn."
Interviewer [translating]: "Well folks: He said there's an album and a single
coming up! [And I don't know nothing!]"
Boing!

While at work I came across a recent listing for a Wendy & Lisa single
called "Are You My Baby". Does anyone know if this is new? I think
it's an import *UK* single because the price was $10.99. I know a
certain store in Canada has a copy but I live in California!
Just curious if it's material from the TCH produced album which WEA UK
(wasn't it?) rejected.

through no conscious effort on my part (long story) I found myself
on the CDNow website last night. I discovered a listing for:
808 STATE/RE-MIXES + RARE `97
I don't recall seeing this mentioned on this list (although I was
mysteriously unsubscribed for a couple of months). Anyway, I ponied
up the credit card for approx. $31 plus shipping for this. Anyone have
some information?
Also, last summer when the release of "Don Solaris" was imminent, many
of us in the US convinced ourselves that, although Tommy Boy did not
see fit to release the disc in the US, someone else would be sure to
jump in. Well, here we are, approaching a year, three UK single
titles, and no US anything. Comments . . .
Finally, I'm making my long desired first trip to the UK in 10 days,
primarily London. Any suggestions on record shops would be most
welcome (actually, any suggestions on anything would be most welcome!
Heck, I'll even buy any listmember a pint . . . )
heading back into the shadows . . .

Hello all. I thought I would tell everyone that Scott Weaver, Markus
Arnold and I were in Manchester with 808 State over the weekend. There is
some exciting and not so exciting news. I'll tell you the first half
which is the good news. Markus will post the bad news in a day or so.
The good news is that 808 State have definitely left Tommy Boy here in the
US. They are currently sighning under the US label "Cleopatra" in the US
and Don Solaris "Should" be out here in America with in the next 2 months
or so. 808 are comming to America to finish sighning contracts with this
new label next month. They seemed to be very excited about this new label
and I think they will do well under it. I hope!!! They are also currently
working on a new album and according to Daz, its close to being finished.
Maybe it will come out before the new year. At least thats what they said.
Markus will post the "Not So Good News" in a day or so...

Lazlo, you are far too cynical. On the contrary, I'm looking
forward to hearing their unique, inevitable take on "You Could Be
Mine" on Cleo/Hypnotic's "Trance Tribute to Guns 'n Roses" compilation.
Maybe they'll open for Electric Hellfire Club...
Frankly, I'll miss being able to buy their stuff anywhere besides
maybe Tower Records. Maybe majors don't always promote your stuff
like they should, but at least they, you know, get it into a lot
of record stores.

Good for 808, good for cleopatra (who is finally getting name bands)
but.....
Consider the sad case of the Information Society, who was supposed to
have an album out on Cleo this summer. The single (Are Friends Electric)
only had 500 copies pressed and now Cleopatra says that the album has
been "put off" for a "while". Hope this doesn't happen with 808 State.
(Maybe if they told Cleopatra that their albumwas really a Trance
complilation....)

Subject: (ztt) Another cult band leaves ZTT
Date: 23 May 1997 19:33:35 +0200 (MET DST)
808 State have left ZTT / Warners.
Personally I don't think it's so bad; they've been with them for eight years
and I think it's time for change. They were never really happy with the
promotion Warners gave them. As far as I can tell they left on good terms,
because it wasn't publicised at all - it's been kept low-key. The contract
expired and when where asked if they wanted to extend it, they refused. I
think Warners were the problem, not ZTT.
Now the big question is who they are going to sign with. I think it could be
a major again - somebody like Virgin. As far as America goes, well you
already heard that a deal with Cleopatra is in the pipeline. I don't know
the label, but the fact that they have re-issued Kraftwerk must give them
some credit.
I don't know what's going to happen in Japan, which is probably 808's most
successful market these days. Maybe they'll stay with Warners there?
Whatever happens, let's hope 808 get a chance to put out more good music.
They have loads 'on the shelf' which they haven't been able to publish.
Maybe another 'State to State' release is imminent?
That doesn't leave many exciting bands on ZTT... let's see what Propaganda do.

I've seen a 'Partyzone' edition dedicated to ZTT. It must have been 93/94.
They played...
- The Art Of Noise: Moments In Love
- FGTH: Relax (Ollie J's Seven Inches)
- S/O/R: Sweet Sensation
- 808 State: Time Bomb
- MC Tunes vs 808 State: The Only Rhyme That Bites
- Honky: The Whistler
- FGTH: Two Tribes (Fluke's Minimix)
- Grace Jones: Slave To The Rhythm
- Seal: Crazy
- 808 State: Pacific
- S/O/R: Extacy
- Seal: The Beginning
- Tara: Save Me From Myself
- 808 State vs UB40: One In Ten
- The Art Of Noise: Close (To The Edit)
- Honky: K.K.K.
- MC Tunes vs 808 State: Tunes Splits The Atom
- S/O/R: Exorcist
- 'Partyzone-Massive: Zance' (a megamix)
This isn't exactly well balanced, is it?! Propaganda is only appearing
in the megamix; in the form of a few short shots from the 'Duel' clip.
There wasn't much of background info either.
So it was really only good to see some uncommon ZANG videos.

OK. So 808 State, the band that gave the label its rebirth has finally
left. I can't say that I'm all that surprised. It's obvious that once
Warners sampled the sales of Seal's release they had to have more. That
obviously accounts for all of the "pop" stuff ZTT released lately (last
year?) and it also accounts for all of the singing on the new 808 album.
I'm glad they left actually. ZTT doesn't stand for anything anymore.
It's pitiful. What have they released so far this year?! Public Demand
and an 808 State single. ANYTHING else? Who knows.
Damnit! Good luck to you 808 State. You deserved better.
I look forward to your upcoming releases.
ZTT on the other hand... what's the point anymore?

The Visible Silence concert was released in Canada as:
VHS: 1987 CN (Polygram Video; 041 474-2) [NTSC]
Beta: 1987 CN (Polygram Video; 041 474-4) [NTSC]
Dunno if it's still in print, but it might be.

Here in flyover country, it seems as though in the past several years, 808
State product has been hard to come by for imports, and Tommy Boy certainly
hasn't done anything to promote 808 State here in the US and have been hit
and miss when it come to reissuing 808 State product. My question is though,
does Trevor still retain all of the rights to the ZTT stuff or do they get
transferred to the new company in a rights buyout deal? If they stay at ZTT
everyone knows they will NEVER see the light of day again just as Trevor
"*^@###@" Horn screwed up all of the other remix compliations - i.e. Zance
and the FGTH deal.
At LEAST, Cleopatra seems to be an aggressive record company in trying to
secure licensing for reissuing product. Maybe we could see the 808 State
back catalogue all over again if they do it right...

I think some of the rights would be held by Trevor if not ZTT because I
believe the music is co-published by Perfect Songs, aren't they?
As far as Trevor screwing up the remix compilations? I haven't heard
any evidence about this. Please give more details. Or did you just
mean ZTT in general?

Hi,
Just thought I'd put my two cents in (real value estimated at less than
1/18th of a cent).
A couple of years back when Warners signed ZTT to a world wide deal it
was widely rumoured that they did it mainly to egt Horn as a producer.
ZTT seems to have become just that, a sort of "imprint" for Horn's
productions and not much more, which is maybe why 808 left (were forced
out?)
I dunno, maybe it's different in the UK, but here in the states all we
get is Seal (not that this is a bad thing).
By the wya, one day I am going to try and do an issue of Lexicon devoted
to the label (ZTT). I have JJ Jeczalik lined up. Can anybody put me
intouch with anyone else from the label's glory days or just from the
label today? Thanks.

I have once seen an appearence of a band called "Elephants Are Big" on
The Tube show. Actually those were nobody else than The Art Of Noise.
The origin must have been 1983 or even earlier. Perhaps somebody knows more
about this?
Cheers
Joerg

To add to this topic:
Allegedly, a while ago Warner Germany wanted to rerelease "The Heart Of
Darkness" by Hoodlum Priest. But ZTT/Warner-UK prevented this plans...!
It seems they never understood its musical potential.
BTW, I can only agree to what Mark said. Actually I'd be somehow glad, if 808
State left ZTT.
ZTT seem to have lost what it's all about: A good taste in music!

No, it's a single from one of their earlier albums.

You've talked to Jill? That's cool.
Anyway, I thought that Trevor was living out here in Los Angeles now.
One of my friends I used to work with said that one of his friend's used
to be his Personal Assistant.
As for Warner surpressing stuff...don't you remember that Wendy & Lisa
album? I believe Warners said they thought it was too eclectic or
something.
