To everyone that has enquired lately :
Unfortunately, I will no longer be able to make copies of my Art of Noise
footage anymore. I have been having problems with my VCR eating my tapes all
of the time, so I cannot put my original copies in danger any longer. I will
also be going off-line around October or November due to Basic Military
Training and tech school.
Until I receive a new VCR; have settled in my station, and I have regained
net access, the tapes will be in storage.

I'm afraid that there is no place currently stocking the album
"artofsilence.co.uk" anymore. I contacted JJ a few months ago and he stated
that he has exited the music biz entirely. He claims he is now "happy
selling futures". But he was quick to point out the, then pending, AON
album "The Seduction of Claude Debussey". So much for me getting my hands
on that last artofsilence single "Teach Me".
I find it interesting that so many people on here and abroad claimed to
dislike artofsilence.co.uk's sound, yet, appreciate Seduction. The two
sound very much alike considering that they both employ various current
club music styles. House music is very prevalent in both of them. In my
opinion, the core music of both albums are very similar. The major
differences are more piano work and more of those little added
background/accent noises from Anne and Trevor. Personally, I love both
albums. But, JJ got there first...

So far only one answer has gotten close to the original meaning.
However, nobody has nailed it on the head.
"Metaphor on the floor" is a pun on the American term 4 on the floor.
This is an automotive reference. It got it's start in the 50's and was
popularized in the 60's by ads for such cars as the Oldsmobile Cutlass 442.
It is referencing a 4 speed manual transmission shifter located on the
floorboard of the car as opposed to a column shifter. A floor shifter is
preferable since there are fewer connective mechanics to the transmission,
this way. And shifting gears this way is a much more natural, fluid motion.
I don't even like automatic transmissions that shift on the column. All the
more reason why I miss my Cutlass.
Any way, as cars through the 60's grew faster and more powerful "4 on
the floor" became synonymous with the performance rather than the feature.
Rock and roll musicians adopted the phrase to indicate songs where the kick
drum is struck on all four beats of 4/4 time signature. It creates a greater
punch to the sound of any song. Disco, new wave and techno music are the
most notorious of the genres for relying, heavily, on the 4 on the floor
beat. The irony is that the beat of "Metaphor on the Floor" isn't quite your
stock 4 on the floor beat. One of the upsides to drum & bass. I can only
assume that exposure to Californian logic and culture, at Sarm West Studio
Los Angeles, has infected and corrupted Trevor and company to be aware of
street racing terms. I, now, have an odd image of their next album alluding
to centerline wheels, 4 wheel anti-lock disc brakes and smog pumps. God I
hope not.
As for the person answering with getting down on all fours, it would
seem you have some personal issues to be addressed. Seek help or seek out a
lover who experiments a bit... your choice. ;-> Just kidding.

Lately, I said that I won't be able to make copies of my AON footage
anymore. Well, I don't want to leave anyone hanging, so I will give you the
e-mail address of the original trader who I bought the tapes from.
Last time I checked, his address was : ronkane@eathlink.net
I would PLEASE ask that you DON'T flood him becuase I'm not sure if he would
want me to give out his address to everyone or not, but I feel that it would
be unfair to leave you guys out on some lost AON treasure.
NOTE : He charges roughly $20 for each tape. His prices are higher than mine
becuase his dubbing machine is of superb quality. He might charge more for
shipping; I'm not sure. Also, be sure to ask him about foreign conversions
because I'm not sure if he performs these either.
He has everything that I have EXCEPT for the "Art of Love" video.
I personally received that tape from the guys at China and Sire.
He just doesn't deal in Art of Noise either; if you're interested in any
other artists, just ask. I think he has something like 60,000 videos in his
collection. He also buys a lot of Japanese imports. He is a great guy; a
true God send.
So, there you have it. I probably should have told you guys earlier, but I
wasn't really thinking about it until now.
Love you all,

Hello ZTT people,
I have been a ZTT newsletter subscriber since 1994. I am a big fan of
Propaganda. I can't wait till their new album comes out in 2000. Is it me or
is this band a little lazy. Two albums in 14 years. Whatever.
I decided to place some rare Propaganda MP3 files on a web page for you to
download.
Back in 1988 I bought two 3 Inch Propaganda CD singles from Japan at my
local CD Shop for $8.00 a piece. I noticed over the years that people
subscribing to this newsletter have been looking for these discs. (Dr.
Mabuse and P-Machinery)
Well your dream has come true. These items and a rare version of P-Machinery
/ Frozen Faces from a Razzormaid disc are on the following web page.
http://www.flatcracker.com/propaganda/index.htm
Note: The mp3 files are zipped. You will need to unzip them.
I hope you enjoy it.

Hi ztters,
While I think of it, has anyone ever mentioned BBC 1's 'The Other Half' here
in the UK? [well I have now I suppose]
Fact: It makes use of a medley of songs by ArtOfNoise using 'Kiss' as the
main hook. Does anyone know who put this medley together? perhaps it is a
'BBC version'. If no one knows, i'll ask at the beeb.

Does anyone know, if "PANDEMONIUM" was the working title for the album, as for
"A secret wish" it was "Devils advocates" or is this a MTV pandemonium ??????

Hi Jordan,
The track you'd be looking for is called 'Close (to the edit)' and thats the
track that went down a storm in the mid-eighties (though not played all that
much on the Radio now).
Also AON remixed Tom Jones' 'Kiss' a few years later. A Medley of AON hits
can be heard today being used these days on BBC 1's 'The Other Half' using
'Kiss'/'Close (to the edit)'/and that other one with Duane Eddy - that
guitar-twanging one.
Though I'm not an AON connoisseur, I know that this will be on at least one
of their albums. The only version I have is 'Closing' which is a rare
version of 'Close (to the edit)' used as a 'promo' on IQ6.
Hope thats of help,
John M.

I think it was probably the working title. The single came out nine months
before the album and things change quickly in ZTT-land. :-)

Sorry to bring this subject up again. I ordered my Seduction of Claude
Debussy CD at CDNow with a Bonus CD of Metaforce mixes. Yes, you've guessed
it, it came without the Bonus CD. Could someone who did get the bonus CD
let me know if the bonus CD was a separate item or came in a double CD pack
with the Claude Debussy CD?
I wrote to CDNOW a week ago, but haven't heard from them...
Strangely enough I did get the custom CD, but of course only after writing
to CDNOW demanding the key...
Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

It was packed in the same jewelbox with Seduction -- I think they just put the
early pressings in slimline 2CD cases with "metaforce" as the second CD.

Date: 13 Aug 1999 03:58:40 +0200
Hello all,
Haven't anyone noticed the new "Action" numbers on the AON Seduction
realese? It is called "art of noise as the image of a group at the turn of
the century:". Here are the "images" i have:
Image 0003 : The seduction of art of noise
ZTT epk VHS video (Duration: 12:34)
Image 0022 : Masked
A-side of "Dream On" ZTT113TP
Image 0023 : Unmasked
B-side of "Dream On" ZTT113TP
Image 0024 : Cover of "Dream On" ZTT113TP
Image 0031 : "Dream On" US 12" promo
U8P-1420
The booklet of TSOCD states that the album includes images 0007 to 0023,
but that's makes a problem with the UK "Dream On" A and B sides (wrong
counting maybe?). The booklet also says the images are catalogued on the
web site. Can't find it myself...
Does anyone got another item with the 4-digit image number?
I have the 12-trk promo CD - no image number there.
Also no images on the "Metaforce" singles.
Also wanted to note that the address sticker on the pack of the "Dream On"
i got from ZTT (Thanks, Zang!) is a special one, saying
"ZTT (DREAMING IN COLOUR?)". I kept the pack... :)
Cheers,
Boaz

Funny you should mention this :)
I ordered 'Seduction' a few weeks back because of the bonus disc. The CD
came, but no bonus disc. So, I wrote CDnow and explained the situation
to them. They were very kind and told me to keep the disc I got shipped
mistakenly, and they would send me the correct release (with bonus disc)
free of charge. A week later the replacement came -- no bonus disc. So,
I wrote them again and explained the (now very complicated) situation.
They were again very nice and told me to keep the two discs, and they
would try it a third time. The disc came a few days ago -- no bonus
disc. I know have three copies of 'Seduction' with no bonus disc :)
I think I'm just going to give up :)

[plot synopsis] -> an article about
propaganda, their start, and the
single 'dr mabuse'
<transcribed by zero>
german band propaganda plan to take
over the world..from the inside, for a
change. ian pye tries to unravel the
truth from the rhetoric. tonny barratt
provides photographic deceit
'i refuse to be put in a cupboard',
propaganda's ralf dorper warns me
authoritatively. 'always people
want to put you in a cupboard but this
is not so easy with propaganda - to
identify us is not so easy, yes?'
a little idiosyncratic maybe, but
ralf's english is really remarkably
fluent, shaming our national inability
to speak any other language than
our own. dressed almost exclusively
in black he's sitting in zang tumb
tuums cool blue offices explaining
the intention behind the group chosen
to follow the orgy of success afforded
to frankie goes to hollywood. on his right
is susanne freytag, who along with
claudia brueken provides propaganda
with the silky vocal textures fashioned
to lure you into a harder world of fear
and darkness.
the group's debut single is 'dr mabuse'
a record that discovers the missing link
between abba and the german new wave.
like the most powerful advertising it
remains elusive. it's components, art,
message, confection, sublimal codes
and dramas, cannot be readily
dissected depending and relating to
each other in a web of choreographed
illusion and deceit.
on one level it's a great pop record,
but look further into this box of tricks
and you'll see something else. you may find
yourself happily singing this song, which
is funny really, becasue the heart of
the concern is evil.
of the fritz lang movie character 'dr
mabuse', ralf says, 'i think mabuse
was used by lang as a way of symbolising
fascism. he also wanted to revive dr faust,
a figure that was always there in the
minds of the german people - the man who
sold his soul to the devil. and we now
give this mythic spectre new life'

Well, "Beat Box", "Close to the Edit" and "Moments In Love" were, all,
managed to crack Billboard's Top 40. Their longevity, popularity and legend
status belie their low chart positions. "Paranoimia" spent 2 months at #1 on
Mtv's Top 20 and hit around #5 on Billboard. It was so popular here in Tulsa
Oklahoma (not worth writing home about) that the DJs eventually broke their
copies. They did the same thing with Weird Al's "Eat It" and Devo's
"Satisfaction". "Peter Gunn" (that twangy guitar piece mentioned) reached
somewhere around 30-35 on Billboard and 15 or so on Mtv. It also scored them a
Grammy with Duane Eddy for best instrumental of 1986. Subsequent releases
didn't do so well after that until 1988's entry, "Kiss", with Tom Jones.
Nothing else ever hit it big on the pop charts (emphasis on the word pop). But,
they have always managed to maintain good circulation in the clubs; and
probably always will.
This is not counting the myriad (master?)pieces that they've produced for
other people, sometimes incognito.

Art of Noise only had three hits on the official Billboard pop charts. These
are the correct peak positions.
The US hits were:
Peter Gunn #50
Paranoimia #34
Kiss #31
So...no US hits from their first album, and no top ten hits either.

Ah, but also according to Billboard, from the Pop Albums chart:
LP Peak
(Who's Afraid Of?) The Art Of Noise! #85
In Visible Silence #53
In-No-Sense? Nonsense! #134
The Best Of The Art Of Noise #83
FWIW: The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's" registered #1 on this chart for 15 weeks and had NO singles.
(Singles were released from this album some 10 years thereafter.)
But does anybody on this list purchase or enjoy any Art of Noise material (or other related
material, for that matter) based in any way on their chart position?

Hi there,
considering the release of the last Art Of Noise, I was wondering where
ZTT and Trevor are located nowadays. ZTT seems very much pointed to the
USA market (US radio interviews, concerts, promotion) while us European
people (I don't speak for all of us, though) have to order it in the
USA. Of course it has much to do with the contract they have with

My apologies for responding to everything so late in the discussions

Because they say it is. After all, a toaster is a toaster. And, it's
their party; so they'll cry if they want to. Besides, this has been an
intended project for AON (really Trevor) since ZTT's overall masterwork
"The Raiding of the Twentieth Century" was planned. Too bad they never
pulled that one off.
I felt this way about "Below the Waste". I used to say they needed
to rename themselves the Art of Music.
I can only assume that they actually got TSoCD to sound the way they
wanted it to. If not, they only have themselves to blame. Nothing sucks
worse than to work your ass of on a song, or what have you, only to have
it never sound the way you want it to.
I'm not surprised by how light weight TSoCD sounds. Drum 'n Bass
aside, this is more of how the remaining members of the band tend to
think of music. Look at some of the most recent works involving Trevor
or Anne at the helm. "Tubular Bells 2"[1992; Trevor Horn & Mike Oldfield
producing]: nice and airy; my favorite of the three incarnations of that
concept. But, incredibly homogeneous. Not a truly rousing bone in the
whole album. "Seal"(the second) [1994; Trevor producing]: Trevor's new
production style is really taking form by now. It is the logical
progression from "TB2". Very pretty, but again, nothing to pound you
into rubble. And an afterthought contribution for that Batman flick a
year or two later. "Buster" movie soundtrack [199?; musical score
composed and arranged by Anne Dudley]: the first major film she landed.
I'm proud of her for that. She finally put her classical training to a
more predictable work. Not a hint of AON for miles around. It was as if
she were deliberately hiding that fact. Then there was "Groovy Kind of
Love" she did for Phil Collins. But, he got the Grammy for it. At least
he credited and thanked her as part of his acceptance speech.
Incidentally, that was the last time I ever saw JJ and Anne together.
"Songs From the Victorious City" [1990 produced/composed/arranged by
Anne and Jaz Coleman]: nice idea, but, I'm afraid Led Zeppelin (among
others) kind of beat them to the basic idea. Somewhat lively in spots,
however, it ultimately comes off as the soundtrack to a James Bond film.
Actually, come to think of it, I would really like to hear her handle a
Bond movie. With or without a little help from Trevor, I think it would
be great. "The Crying Game" [film score composed & produced by Anne
Dudley]: Roughly, the same situation as the previous soundtrack. Nice
work, but... It was just like if John Lennon, overnight, became a
Fundamentalist Conservative and demanded that Yoko stay in the kitchen
or something. "The Full Monty" [same thing. composed/produced by Anne]:
Really hitting the big time now. She nailed an Academy Award for the
soundtrack. I forgot if it was for "Best musical score for a foreign
film" or just plain "best musical score". It was one of them; and she
looked great.
Sorry for the rant. But, considering this, the subject matter for
TSoCD and what some of those unearthed AON tracks sounded like prior to
being stripped down to the versions we know and love, is it really any
surprise that the new work sounds the way it does?

Date: 22 Aug 1999 02:31:07 +0200
Hi !
My name is Benoεt, I live in Paris & I'm new 2 the list.
I'm a big fan of Eurythmics, Rita Mitsouko
(http://perso.cybercable.fr/systemed/), Prince, Dead Or Alive, Dead Can
Dance, Craig Armstrong, Cocteau Twins, Sparks, EBTG, Yazoo, db,
Associates, Underworld (ZTT quality !!!), and lots of other bands.
On ZTT, I really love ACT, Propaganda, Anne Pigalle.
ACT
I've got the CHANCE 12".
I heard there might exist a CD single ? so ...Truth or myth ???
ANNE PIGALLE
I've got the SOUVENIR D'UN PARIS 12".
It's a french pressing from 1985. ZTT / Island 884 315-1
I once saw a 7", but don't own it.
Face A
SOUVENIR D'UN PARIS (extended version ?) (mix aguicheur) 7'20
Face B
SOUVENIR D'UN PARIS (7" version ?) (mix songeur) 3'55
LIKE WE DO 3'26
I think this single is mega rare, Bcause it's not even mentioned in the
official ZTT discography !!!
It seems it was only issued in France (perhaps also in Japan ?).
I heard it first at the DOK nightclub in Amsterdam, back in 1986.
Then I search for the 12" for... 10 years !!! YES ! I found it in 1995
!!!
So I think it's even more obscure than the ACT Chance's 12', which I
bought through Adrian's years ago for ú 45.
But it's not really sought after, the main reason being few people know
it exist, and ANNE PIGALLE
is not as much collected as artists like FGTH or PROPAGANDA.
If it was, it would easily reach the ú 100 - ú 150 level, I think,
Bcause, one just can't find it !!!
It was a total flop in France, so there was very few copies issued.
U can imagine, I spent 10 years going to EVERY record convention in
France, went 2 "marchΘ aux puces", the french "camden market" every
week-end, put ads in Record Collector and so on, and found nothing in 10
years time !!!
so, I do think it's absolutely mega-rare ! Have U got an opinion on that
?
I just send a scan 2 Guy B Phipps, so he can add it in his fabulous ZTT
discography
Hope 2 hear your feelings about the rarity of this record

Hello everyone !!!!
Due to the fact that J.J. Jeczalik has retired from the music business and
"artofsilence.co.uk" has been out-of-print for a while,
I will be making MP3's tonight of the whole album plus the Mantra mix of
"Teach Me (this is the short mix from Sasha and Digweed's "Northern Exposure
Westcoast Edition" CD)".
PLEASE BE AWARE OF THE FACT THAT I IN NO WAY AM TRYING TO DO HARM TO J.J.
JECZALIK OR HIS COPYRIGHTS BY MAKING THESE SONGS AVAILABLE FOR FREE. I HAVE
NOTHING BUT THE UTMOST RESPECT FOR J.J. AND THE CONTRIBUTIONS THAT HE HAS
MADE TO THE MUSIC INDUSTRY.
However, this album is EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND, if you can even find it at
all. It took two years of searching to find my copy !
But there is one catch : I DON'T KNOW JACK SHIT ABOUT SETTING UP AN FTP SITE
! If anyone would like to give me a tutorial I would really appreciate it.
Otherwise, I will have to send the tracks through ICQ (for those of you on
the list that have it).
I am also considering making MP3's of the Custom CD tracks, but I will only
do that for MP3's of rare mixes and singles that I don't have (ex: Close to
The Edit (Shep Pettibone's Radio Re-Edit) ; etc.)
Please contact me if interested, AND KEEP THIS TO YOURSELF ! The last thing
I need is for the people at ZTT and J.J. himself to bludgeon me to death
becuase I ripped all of these songs. LOL ;-)

I would imagine that this US bias that has been occurring lately is
partly due to Trev's fascination with rap and various pop culture. I
include pop culture as nearly all of his major work seems to be/or is
commenting on it. All the way back to the Buggles he's had an objective,
3rd person interest. Living in the Plastic Age is a phrase coined from an
old '20s Clara Bow "trash pop" movie. The liner notes to one of the
original ZTT AON album variations commented when they try to create
something mainstream, it always becomes something unique. If I could find
the actual remark I would quote it. Its on a vinyl copy in storage. Sadly,
pop culture, an American invention, is what governs most people's concept
of social structure. Blah blah blah. Nyah nyah nyah. Etc etc etc.
To my knowledge, ZTT and AON still reside in London. I don't even think
they have their second office in New York city. However, Sarm West studio
is in Los Angeles. I have no idea why Trevor thinks this is a good idea. Oh
well.

Sarm West is, and has always been, located in London.
Sarm West Coast is the name of the LA studio (or at least it was a
year ago).

All this time, I never noticed the addition of "Coast" to the name. That
is the one I was thinking of. And it is in L.A., though, I can't figure why. I
would have put it in New York. It's a guaranteed change of scenery, their way.
Really, I would be very reluctant to say that Sarm West is the center of
pop music. Pop music -like pop culture- is, actually, behind the pace of
innovation, fashion, style, and originality. Of course, I have limited
respect for pop anything. Consider it this way: nothing can become pop until
it is pioneered by someone else. Then, it's badly mimicked and, consequently,
run into the ground. Various examples could be brought up apart from ZTT
recordings; but, that is an easy way to trip off a flame war. In regards to
the discussion, I would say wherever Sarm is located, that's the center of
pioneering music. Or the center of the universe.
If I were a multi-millionaire, I would live in either Portland, Oregon;
New York, NY; or London, England. I, generally, don't like L.A.; as if you
couldn't guess that one.

No, I really insist: to me SW is the center of pop music and not
the center of pioneering music (not anymore).
It's exactly like you say: something can only become pop, after the innovation
has become a trend. (However not necessarily exploited by somone _else_,
like ZTT have prooved with FGTH.)
But in fact, to my ears, what comes out of SW nowadays isn't that much
innovative. (TSOCD might be an exception, as far as it's recorded there
at all - which brings us back to the question from the subject line...)
I got the impression that people who are now booking Sarm are doing so
because they want to make a record which is technically perfect and which
is likely to become popular - and not to experiment with the technical gear.
(That's due to the fact that SW itself is popular within the business...)

Point taken... And an excellent one at that. Especially with AON making use
of the fad style of drum 'n bass. I think the problem may have something to do
with the professional company Trevor keeps.
Consider the work that was pumped out when the whole five man crew of The Art
Of Noise was around. Then consider the work after Anne, JJ, Gary and Paul took a
hike. I still like the work that occurred after their departure. But, it seemed
to be lacking some dynamic, edgy, punchy quality. Part of that would, also, be
due to the fact that JJ took all the Fairlight CMIs with him. I think he,
ultimately, wound up with 2. So, Trevor resorted to using a Synclavier (ala Paul
Hardcastle and Harold Faltermeyer) as a main sampling super station, instead of
getting a new Fairlight. And what about the replacement staff he wound up hiring?
It almost seems like the studio crew he hired was less adventurous or
experimental. That may just be some strange sense of loyalty to the remaining AON
staff of the time. In which case that's just something I'll have to work out.
But, look at the kind of sounds used for tracks like "Warriors of the Wasteland".
It's just not as risky. It worked well enough, though. I wonder if the style and
very daring of the musicians he is working with is that inspiring or influential
to his work. If that is the case, then, I want to see JJ or Gary (better if both)
come back into the game. Or bring in Boris Blank of Yello if the other options
fail.
All of this having been said, I hope to see a greater outflow of original
musical style on their next album. As much as I enjoy "Seduction...", I feel that
it might have been better served being presented by Anne Dudley & Trevor Horn;
not so much the Art of Noise. I feel it rather inappropriate that a group, as
influential and important as they, should ever need to adopt musical styles that
were spawned by themselves and other pioneers. And hopefully they won't fixate on
all this millennial bullshit, either. It makes me tired.
A theme project that would be deserving of the Art of Noise (I think) would
be collaborating with various bands that credit them as their inspiration for
being. That could, really, only work with all five original members present,
however. Think of it: AON & DJ Shadow/UNKLE; AON & LFO; AON & Prodigy; AON &
Crystal Method and so on! That's where the true seduction is occurring right now.
People that are inspired to create their own music because The Art Of Noise
performed and put it's own amusement on tape for the rest of the world. No matter
what happens I, still, must say thank you to them.

I forgot to add New Orleans, Louisiana. But only from autumn thru spring.
Summertime at 6 feet below sea level and adjacent to the Mississippi River and
the Gulf of Mexico? No thanks.
