How long after ordering from CDnow does it take to get the message
with the access code? I thought it was the next day, but I'm waiting
three days so far...

I ordered exactly a week ago, I got the email about the custom disc on
Tuesday - same day that "Seduction" was shipped. No sign of either one
at my doorstep yet.

The only difference between the two is that the "limited edition"

standard jewel case. The CDs and booklets are identical and bear the

My copy of the Seduction has arrived, but the Amplified "make-yer-own-CD"
has not. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the "autographed" copy of
the Seduction, as advertised on Tower, was -genuinely- autographed by all
four
members (at least I -think- that's Lol Creme's signature). I had expected
the autographs as merely being part of the printing of a limited edition,
or that
it would be autographed just by Lol or something. Paul Morley autographed
it with quotes, i.e. "Paul Morley" (was it really Paul Morley?). It came
with
both a signed and unsigned booklet. Did the crew write anything goofy on
anyone's signed copies?
Anyway... cool. I called the folks at Amplified, who actually sounded like
real, sentient human beings and not mindless CSR drones, and they said that
my make-your-own-CD had been shipped.
Now if only that, my Gentle People Simply Faboo CD and my David Van Tieghem
These Things Happen DAM CD had arrived as well, then I would have been
genuinely happy. Never before has a three-day weekend seemed like such a
long
time...

I got mine today from Amplified.com, and I must say, it's quite cool.
They didn't use cheap-o packaging; it looks like a commercial CD. It's in a
jewel case, with insert, my custom tracklist is printed on the back inlay
(you can't tell it was custom printed for me), and it sounds great.
It is a CD-R, but even is screened to look like a regular commercial release.
Cool! I'm happy!
--dan
P.S. I also got my autographed Seduction CD from Tower; my "Paul Morley" is
in quotes too. That is definitely Anne's real signature; I have a record I
had personally autographed by here (in 1986!) and it looks pretty similar.

Subject: (ztt) Debussy: Favorable review in Consumable
Date: 02 Jul 1999 13:52:55 -0700 (PDT)
The latest issue of the online music review, Consumable, had this to
say about the new AON album:
REVIEW: Art of Noise, _The Seduction of Claude Debussy_
(ZTT/Universal)
- Jon Steltenpohl
Take a dead composer, a deep voiced narrator, a rapper and a
few opera singers, and what do you have? Well, if you're Art of Noise,
you have _The Seduction of Claude Debussy_. Most of you know Art of
Noise through songs such as "Beat Box" and the Dragnet theme. Yet,
anyone who's gone beyond the singles and dived into the world of an
Art of Noise album has found themselves in a completely new world.
Now, after a 9-year absence, the band has reformed to create a new
soundscape based around their apparent love of the turn of the century
composer Claude Debussy.
These days, anyone with a computer can generate dance tracks
with the blink of an eye, and on the surface, Art of Noise doesn't
sound as remarkable today as they once did. But, technology doesn't
breed musical or artistic talent, and the vision of Art of Noise goes
beyond the simple satellite blips and deep bass of their peers. Their
impeccable judgment allows them to transcend the current vapid
"electronica" sound they helped to create. This is music first and
foremost. The dance beats and atmosphere are simply tools in Art of
Noise's arsenal.
Of course, any description of a band on paper that uses the
word "transcend" seems a bit elitist and abstract right off the bat.
Yet, unlike their counterparts in the world of abstract visual arts,
Art of Noise is high brow music for everyman. Even if you've never
heard of Debussy, you can appreciate the songs. Anyone who's been
drawn in by a song like "Moments in Love" realizes that Art of Noise
can create the beautiful out of the abstract. Consider "Dream in
Colour"
from this album: The track is expansive. It ranges from operatic voices
to dreamy choruses to lush ambient dance to an engaging jungle beat
over the course of 8-and-a-half minutes. The deep sullen voice of John
Hurt narrates you through the songs. "Imagine," the narrator implores
you, "Debussy dreaming in colours." He pulls you in further into the
hypnotic mix and instructs as you fall "deeper into the color of a
dream." As the trance is completed, the narrator snaps his fingers, and
you begin the experience with the next track, "On Being Blue."
At the start of the song, the narrator guides you to consider
how music might be used to suggest colors. The song is a soft ode that
features a beautiful operatic voice, a quiet Spanish guitar, and
shimmering, mournful strings that create an incredibly stark, deep,
and sad atmosphere. It is like diving into a pool of cobalt blue --
which is exactly the song's intent.
Halfway through the album, another voice is added to the
chorus,
the narrator and the opera singers. The voice is none other than the
rapper, Rakim. At first, this seems like a strange pairing, but given
Art of Noise's original classic "Beat Box" and the dance remixes
included
with the re-release of Eric B. and Rakim's _Paid in Full_ album, a song
like "Megaforce" is entirely understandable. Musically, it works
remarkably well. Not only does Rakim have one of the purest voices in
rap, but Art of Noise assembles a beat as well as any DJ. It may not
exactly be the right style for pumping out of a lowrider, but it would
fit right in with US3 or Digable Planets.
All told, despite it's odd collaborations and obscure subject
matter, _The Seduction of Claude Debussy_ is simply a masterwork. Art
of Noise manages to maintain continuity throughout the entire album.
The tracks can be scrutinized note by note or played casually in the
background. It is doubtful if the stodgy world of orchestral music
could appreciate this album, but fans of the Art of Noise can embrace
_The Seduction of Claude Debussy_. However, unless you're into ambient
and electronic music, casual fans who remember the old Art of Noise
hits
are better off picking up their excellent "Best of" collection before
jumping feet first into this new release.

BTW - If you love the commericial release of the 'Debussy' disc, you may
want to look into finding the 1st advanced pre-release version of the disc
as it is very different to the proper one. In my opinion the advanced
version has a better track order and some better mixes.
www.eil.com is one place to look for it, or www.slcd.com

In my opinion, this would the bomb-ass line up to end all bomb-ass
line ups :
Kraftwerk
Art of Noise (with J.J. and Gary back along with everyone else)
Yello
Orbital
808 State
Pet Shop Boys
Vangelis
Jean-Michel Jarre
Zapp & Roger (if they were still here with us, God Bless them)
Tangerine Dream
Underworld
Kitaro
Mickey Hart/Planet Drum
Orb
Depeche Mode
Shannon (wasn't "Let The Music Play" one of the first acid
tracks ? Of course many wouldn't agree, but 1984 is
obviously earlier than the 2nd summer of love in 1988.)
Anyone else want to add to the list ?

Subject: (ztt) A personal response to 'seduction'
Date: 06 Jul 1999 20:16:55 -0500
Greets, fellow ZiTTs. I hope you dont mind some indulgence on my part as to offer my initial take
on 'the seduction of claude debussy' after my virgin and complete listen:
Two words: Wow (repeat)
I am so pleased with this disc and know that it I will listen to it many times. How many times have
I played 'daft' as loud as I can take it? How many times as well to 'Closing of the Year'? That 8
year difference shows great maturity in Ms Dudley and Mr Horn just as the 8 year difference does
from then to 'seduction'.
Up to now I've had to listen to my (imaginary, mind you; don't want anybody to get in trouble here)
MP3 of 'Rapt ~ Egoism'. It was both a different mix and at only 22K. All the while I enjoyed that,
but wondered what lay before and after it. Now I know. And every frame (as it is a digital
recording) seems properly placed. My sense about half-way through was that the frolicking of the
"'Who's Afraid' AoN" has matured much like the Beatles from 'Please Please Me' to 'Abbey Road'.
There's no mistaking the style, or I should say styles: e.g the lingering end note with sharply
edged guitar flutters, the solo estrogenical* croon, the general manner of first pulling you in
close then rushing around you like standing under a waterfall...and that laugh-out-loud moment when
the refrain from 'Moments in Love' twinkled by... Did I mention I really enjoy this album?
When it gets down to it, I wouldn't want Yes to make a new 'Close to the Edge', nor John Hughes
another 'Ferris Beuller'. I also wouldn't want AoN to make another 'Who's Afraid'. What they did
make here is just plain wonderful. I'm also quite impressed with the CD boolet's design and layout.
And the fact that several mixing engineers and years seemed to pass to record this LP, yet it all
sounds as cohesive to me, at least on first listen, as if it were recorded in a single day. I also
like that there's a 'Bonus CD' enclosed, but the packaging for that leaves something to be desired.
Ah well. I have extra CD jewel cases for just such an occassion.
Still, this is AoN as I could only imagine them almost 2 decades after their initial partaking.
Like all good things which can change over time, I consider that AoN has changed for the better.
Thank you for your time and I hope you all can enjoy 'seduction' as much as I.

Somewhere Paul Morley must be laughing his head off.
His remarks in the recent DJ-mag interview as to why fans would scramble to
find the promo for Dream On
is rather stupid if you ask me.
Yes This is what being a fan is! Off course you would want to hear
everything your favorit band has made.
So in addition to having great trouble finding this recording, I also have
to be laughed in the face by one of the members of the band.
Isn't that nice.
And he's at it again.
The recent custom CD that is only available to fans in UK and USA is
driving me crazy. So it seems you guys won't be getting my
hard earned money this time. Suit yourself.
Paul Morley must be having the time of his life

I consider Shannon's "Let the music play" as one of the best dance songs ever.
I would add to your list the following bands/authors:
-Higher Intelligence Agency
-Orb
-Rockets
-Vince Clarke
-Software
-Spacetime Continuum

It would be great if those people living in the UK and the US to keep an eye
open on the charts and to publish their findings on the list for us poor
souls who live in, for example, Japan, where copies of TSOCD are rather hard
to find and who have no idea where to access chart data. The last I heard
was that metaforce was languishing at 53 in the UK charts. as this as high
as it gets? That's what AON get for putting out an extremely conventional
track.
Ah well, I guess I will have to wait until I return the the UK in August to
hear my wonderful custom CD and the long awaited album.
ps I heard a section of the album on Japanese TV yesterday and I thought the
opera was very nice, contrary to what some others on the list thought!!
Keep dreaming in colour.............
pps On the Universal American release, is it "Dreaming in colour" or
"Dreaming in color"?

Hello list,
I have just spend some days in Russia, where TSOCD naturally arrived ealy
July. It were in 3 out of 5 shops, that I visited. One legal store, where
the original was imported and two 'shops' with illegal pressings, where they
simple hardcopy both CD and front page! These illegal CDs are sold at 1.5 -
3.0 $ each - with gradual rebates, dependent on the number of CDs you
purchase. One of the shops listed rebates for 201-300 copies. I wonder how
many customers use these quantities!

Someone in france gave me a really badly coded mp3 of the Moonlighting
Mix of "Snobbery and Decay". He did not make the mp3 himself.
After much problems, I have finally been able to get it to play.
MacAmp and Winamp wont play it. And i've heard Xing isn't playing it either.
it's the full 6:07 mix, but the file itself is only 330kb or so!
a PC application called "Small mpeg player" was able to play it, it
seems it's a component of 'cdcopy'.
www.cdcopy.sk has the 2mb download for cdcopy and i assume smp3p (the
player) is part of it.
the Mp3 file is on my webspace: http://www.bestweb.net/~cdaraghy
After downloading the file (right click it's name and choose save as,
or mac users: hold option when clicking the file name), save the file
locally. YOU MAY MOST LIKELY NEED TO RUN UNCOOK ON THE FILE due
to a frame out-of-sync problem with the file. Uncook fixes scrambled
sounding mp3's.
After you uncook the file, you should be able to play it with small mpeg (smp3p.exe)
it was coded horribly, single channel 8khz at 3.8kb/sec
Other than me playing the file out to a DAT, and then re-sampling it and
re-creating a mp3 I dont know any other way to accomplish better
compatibility.
The song is the full 6:07 mix, somehow it's only a 330kb file though!
and it
does sound awful but you can hear the whole song and tell it's snobbery and
decay. just imgine what realaudio first sounded like when it first came out,
and you'll get an idea.
Mac users: i have no clue what will play this. Macamp doesn't work.
and i dont know of a macintosh uncook program.

Subject: (ztt) Off-Topic : Back with report
Date: 10 Jul 1999 22:47:19 PDT
Hey all !!!
Got back in today; I'm tired as hell !!!
The Chemical Bros. rocked !!!! One problem though.
THE DJ'S !!!!!
I arrived at the Hollywood Palladium at around 5:30 PM. The doors opened at
6:30. My friend and I had stood in the second row that was formed. Some DJ
they had (who name is unknown) spun shit for a good two hours. This REALLY
began to piss my friend and I off. Then finally Todd Terry came up and did
his set after that first load of dung had been dropped. Todd wasn't bad, but
he could've spun some better stuff.
Midway into the set, we had gotten so damn exhausted from standing that we
moved up to the balcony. Finally at 10:30, the Bros. appeared.
I felt like I was at some school dance. I almost went insane. I mean
I know that long DJ sets are typical at a rave, but I came to see the Bros.;
not to hear 4 hours of shit. If you mix, you need to have GOOD MUSIC and not
repetitive Chinese water torture. Made me think twice about having my
turntables repaired. ;)
I didn't dance until they opened with "Hey Boy Hey Girl". I knew that I
would be dead by the time that they finally arrived on stage if I had done
so earlier. Too much treble though. And too many high pitched siren sounds
and grinding bomb distortion. There was this one girl who got up on stage
and flashed the crowd (that's when I regretted moving up to the balcony),
and one guy got roudy with the wanna-be bacon squad and was kicked out. The
place reeked of bud and sweat. It always suprises me how people sneak stuff
in after being frisked. I remember seeing Kraftwerk at the same place last
year and I was told that I couldn't bring in my CD's. I asked the security
guard if he could hold them until the end of the show because I didn't want
to step out of line to put them back in the car. Fucker ran off with them
after the show. Nevertheless, when the show started, some guy was waving his
vinyl copy of "Ralf & Florian" around in the air.
WHAT THE FUCK ???
Also, I noticed once again that when older people have nowhere to go, they
come see what's up with us kids. It's so cute and silly to see old grandmas
and guys in their mid 40's who are all fried out of their minds dance with
their eyes closed. ;)
FOR THE ZTT/ART OF NOISE LIST :
Was at the Virgin Megastore at the Ontario Mills Mall earlier today;
they played bits from "Seduction", and I saw like, three of four copies of
the Yebo remixes in the clearance section for $3.99 ! :0
I also got the issue of DJ magazine with the Anne & Paul interviews. There
was an ad for Metaforce in it as well, and DJ Michael Kilkie made the Rhythm
Masters remix number one on his list. There is also a photo and interview of
AoN inside of freebie mag Mean Street (a small Orange County based, US
publication that mostly specializes in punk with a dab of rap and techno).
FOR THE YELLO LIST :
I finally picked up "Solid Pleasure" a few days ago; I must say that it is
quite trippy ! Chico Hablas' guitar solos on that album are so beautiful !!!

Note: Ok, get out your green CD and put on The Moebius. Do it! This
post is a
lot neater if you do. Turn the volume up a bit, too.
Juno: Happy Birthday! Oh, and I agree with what you said about Brendan.
(To Brendan from the Orbital list :
Despite everything that has been said, and the backlash that has
resulted
from your joining in and posting, I want to extend my hand of friendship
to
you.)
We love ya! I don't disagree with anything because I immediately delete
anything with a thread name that I'm not interested in anyway = D!!
(Which is
about 32 messages per day now). Don't get self-conscious, it's just a
mailing
list. All we do is obsess about Orbital (and other music) to the point
of
idolatry and mental disorders. We have no basis in the real world, as
you will
soon realize = ). It's hard to be the new guy because your views have
not been
distorted and moulded yet. You'll feel right at home when your
technical
prowess for music knowledge and appropriate Orbital obsession reach an
equilibrium. Then you'll turn into one of the more respected members of
the
group, because you won't talk about music in layman's terms; you have a
good
idea of what you're talking about. The heirarchy will continue to
evolve as you
become more obsessed with Orbital (Gatsby syndrome), and then everything
pretty
much starts to repeat itself (a twist in the fabric of space where time
becomes
a loop). Posts will contain the same arguments (maybe about a different
group,
or by a different person), and the commotion will cause deja vu, etc.
Sometimes
the arguments change, or they stop or start. There are different
variations
happening at the same times. New people join, old ones leave; lurkers
surface,
and it all adds to the mix. More new people come in, changing the
atmosphere.
Sometimes it's very intricate, other times it's slow. Half of the time
it
appeals to some people, the other half it appeals to the other people.
In other words, this group is just a big Orbital song. That's why we're
all
here. Weird, huh?

Hi there,
Saturday, I was in Amsterdam, making the famous 3-recordshop-tour
(Boudisque, Fame, Concerto) and in only 1 of those shops I found TSOCD
from AON. For 67 guilders (roughly 33 dollar). I didn't buy it, since it
was the first shop we came into, hoping that it was somewhere else too.
Alas, the truth is that that was the only copy in Amsterdam for sale :-(
Was, because when I returned it was gone. Grrr. I asked why it was so
expensive. It was because ZTT only has the rights to sell in the UK and
the USA. Damn! He also didn't know anything about the custom CD
action...

Perfectly sad, indeed. Out of interest, Jay, what new records have come out
this year that you *do* like? That *did* live up to your expectations?
Let me state for the record that, having had TSOCD for a few months now (I
got the 12-track promo a while ago), I am absolutely enamored of it and it
remains in heavy rotation at work, at home, in the car, on my radio show,
etc. No qualifiers: I *like* "Metaforce" and have been an Eric B & Rakim fan
since their debut album; I like the album beginning to end, top to bottom,
inside and out. This is the State of the Art in 1999.
My only minor gripe is with the 13-track version that was actually released.
I've said this before on the list, but let me say again that, in my opinion,
the 12-track promo version is *vastly* superior, with the un-broken
"Dreaming in Colour" and the different track order and without the extra
vocal overdubs and other little odds and ends they added. I wouldn't go so
far as to say they "ruined" the album with the 13-track version and its
associated tweaks, but I very much prefer the 12-track one, and not just
because I heard it first.
As an aside, this difference between the two versions has me wanting more
than ever to hear the "alternate" or "original" version of Seal's debut (I
think the details are in Lazlo's discog if you don't know what I'm talking
about). I gave up a while ago on finding my own copy, but now I'd like to
ask whether anyone has one that they'd be willing to CD-R for me. I'm
curious to see whether that last batch of tweaks compromised the quality
(like TSOCD) or improved it. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance... speaking of Seal, I'm going to see him live for the
first time tomorrow night...

Actually, I have an extremely varied taste in music. I picked up the new
Moby cd, as well as the new Def Leppard cd, and both far exceeded my
expectations. I'm really addicted to the Moby cd. The new Amanda Marshall
cd is also excellent. Out of all the cds I was anxiously awaiting, I only
feel that the AoN cd let me down. However, I'm thrilled to have the special
cd with some of their more classic bits.

Date: 12 Jul 1999 14:52:24 -0400
Hello,
My name is Jordan Feinman, and I'm new to this list. I just thought I'd
introduce myself.
My only real exposure to ZTT has been Seal's 1st and 2nd album. The two
albums have done nothing but pique my interest in Trevor Horn's production
techniques. Speaking of which, I'd like to take this opportunity to ask --
does anyone here have any more detail on the production techniques used
behind either of these 2 albums? I.e., instruments, sounds, track laying,
etc. Any magazine articles would be great as well.
I'm also looking into doing some production work and am leaning towards
purchasing Cakewalk 8. I realize that ZTT uses Pro Tools, and was debating
whether or not to go that route. Forgive me if this questions is tangential
to this list, but does anyone have any comparisons they can draw from using
Pro Tools and/or Cakewalk?
As a note of trivia, has anyone here noticed the reverb on only every other
snare hit in Fly Like an Eagle? Or the very subtle
triangle-in-lieu-of-hi-hat found just before the snare hits?
Sincerely,
Jordan Feinman

Date: 12 Jul 1999 17:36:40 PDT
As someone else mentioned, it is possible to get all 12 Art of Noise tracks
on the amplified.com custom CD -- because I just got mine, too!
I have a question, though: Has anyone else noticed the following mastering
flaws, or do they only appear on my copy:
"Memory Loss": After the track ends, the counter keeps ticking off a few
seconds. At the 1:25 mark, there is a small "burp" of sound.
"The Subject Has Moved Left": A very brief (under one second) drop out
(sudden silence) at the 1:33 mark.
"Structure": A funny edit occurs around the one-minute mark, sort of a
"stutter" effect, as if two pieces of tape were sloppily joined.
None of these are a big deal, but I'm curious if they are on all copies of
the songs.

Not sure what story you're referring to, but Sasha & Digweed's DJ mix
album 'Northern Exposure 2' was originally released on Ministry of Sound
in the UK in 1997. It later saw a US release as 2 separate discs on the
Ultra label and should still be available. These US releases were
arbitrarily subtitled as "WestCoast" and "EastCoast" editions. While
there are some styles of dance music more popular on one side of the
country than the other, these discs are not good indicators of what those
styles actually are.
Unfortunately, if you buy the WestCoast disc to get the Art of Silence
track, you're getting the weaker of the two mixes. The EastCoast disc is
great -- and I say this as someone who can't stand Sasha & Digweed mixes,
normally.

I would return the disc(s) to CDNow (or CDNo as it were) for a full refund
and place my order with Tower Records. My reason why follows. This is a quote

I feel it important to note that it took those dolts over 4 days to respond

Tower got the job done in 48hrs... as advertized.

Please excuse the take on Trainspotting and its advertising jingle.
Someone mentioned that they wanted to hear the alternate version of Seal's
debut. Add to that wishlist the alternate but never released version of "Big
Generator" (back when Mr Horn was into that big time production sound) and
the fabled Mint Juleps and Wendy and Lisa albums. Actually, the unreleased
Mint Juleps album is mentioned briefly in Holly Johnson's autobiography
(the part where the judge in the ZTT case tours ZTT studios and Steve Lipson
is demonstrating the synclavier).
Perhaps if ZTT or Trevor monitor this list then I might find a nice email in
my Inbox with MP3s attached. Well, we can all dream, can't we!!

Hey everybody.
I am sorry to hear about all the trouble everyone has been having at
CDNow. I pre-ordered TSoCD on Friday 6/25. On Tuesday 6/29 (the
release date), I received the following email. I hope that it will help
some of you who are having problems with this process. Interestingly
enough, at the bottom of my inbox tonight (after I'd read all these
stories) I found a survey asking me to rate my recent purchase
experience with CDNow. Rest assured that I made good use of the
comments section on behalf of you all. (I blanked out my access code in
the email below, sorry). Please note that there are a couple ways to
contact Amplified with "questions about this offer." Good luck to you
all.

my favorite track on the rarities disc, too...
My copy also has the same flaws as noted in earlier posts.

you bought TSoCD from CDNow and need a code. My code showed up almost
instantly after emailing them: I'm very pleased and looking forward to my

Problem solved! I finally just telephoned support at amplified.com, got

the problem is at CDNOW -- so if you have trouble, just go straight to

Last week I was dining at a swanky Chinese restaurant in Beverly Hills.
Next to the wonderful scents wafting from the kitchen, the finest thing
in the air was the sounds of the new Art of Noise CD, at a low volume
with the bass discretely turned down. At first I could only hear the
piano bits, so I asked the waitress if it was a Debussy CD, or the new
Art of Noise. She laughed, "I've heard Art of Noise, and no way is this
them!". Then after checking the CD player, she was amazed that it was
indeed AoN. 2:-)

Date: 19 Jul 1999 18:39:17 -0500
Did any of you check out the quality of the various brands of CDs that are
available to make audio copies?
I made an audio copy on a MAXWELL CD at the end of May. And over the
week-end, when I wanted to listen to it, my CD player did not recognized it
at all.
A friend of mine told me that MAXELL has the worst CDs to make audio
copies. Supposedly, VERBATIM also give suboptimal quality.
He did not have any problems with other brands of CDs so far.
Did anyone on the list find that other brands of CDs also make poor quality
audio copies?
Or, is there a brand known for its superior quality of audio copies?
Thanks,
Maggie
PS. I am talking about audio copies and NOT mp3 copies.

Cliff : A perfect story, as I love Chinese food very much, and of course I
am a huge AON fan. That's very cool to hear !
For everyone else :
When is the scheduled release date for the "Dreaming In Colour" single ?
Will this one NOT be released in the US as well ? Anyone enter the Mixman
contest yet ?

Someone told me that if I would burn a CD at a lower speed the signal would

The same thing happened to me, and I emailed CD-Now a couple of times about
it - only got form responses. Finally emailed amplified.com for help and
they sent me a password and instructions. I just told them the story -
didn't even give them an order number, but they responded promptly. I just
received the CD today. In CD-Now's defence, I did get an email from them a
few days ago (several days after I had already ordered the CD using the
password amplified.com provided), saying that someone would be contacting
me. Also, I did change my email address since last ordering form CD-Now, so
they might have sent the password to the old address. But this is more info
than you need, just contact amplified.com!
By the way, I got all 12 "songs".
Good luck and thanks for all the discogs, etc. etc.

Hey there
I was watching ABC's video for "The Look of Love" and thought I might
have spotted Trevor Horn at the end of the video.
I dont know if Trev had anything to do (ever) with ABC, perhaps the
album was recorded at Sarm or something (i should go check credits).
It's at the very end of the video, after the girl and guy compare
'muscles' - a very short seen of a guy with horn-rimmed glasses in red

OK, let's catalog these. They sound to me like they're either in the

The undesirable effects can be found at the following locations:

Date: 21 Jul 1999 11:10:48 -0500
I've been feeling the same thing about 1999: a big year for new work from
some of my favorite long-dormant creative types. I'd add to the Phantom
Menace and TSoCD list both Eyes Wide Shut (first Kubrick film in, what, 14
years?) and Futurama (first new Matt Groening show since the Simpsons in
1990).
I was seven when Star Wars came out and it changed my perspective on damn
near everything, influenced my tastes in not only movies, but books, music,
design, etc. Art of Noise in 1983 was a similar experience and continues to
influence and inform my musical taste to this day.
I beg to differ, however, with your reactions. Both Phantom Menace and TSoCD
exceeded my incredibly high expectations; I'm up to eight viewings of
Phantom Menace and TSoCD remains in heavy rotation. Neither was a "slow
burn," either; I was giddy at first blush on both and my appreciation and
admiration only grows with each viewing of Phantom Menace and each listen of
TSoCD.
Like you, though, I can't wait for more. We all know the long-range plan for
continued Star Wars prequels, but I'm wondering whether anyone's heard
anything more about the "alternate" versions of TSoCD planned ("The
Reduction of Claude Debussy," "The Production of Claude Debussy," "The
Abduction of Claude Debussy," etc.). Any new news on these?

Expectation, expectation, expectoration.
When I was eight or nine, I saw a movie that forever changed
my
perspective on science fiction films and computer-assisted
art.
The craftsman who created this movie made a few more, which
while
handsome, were nowhere near as impressive. Then there was
silence
for over a decade.
When I was thirteen or fourteen, I bought an album (and a
gazillion
12" singles) that forever changed my perspective on
electronic
music and further enhanced my appreciation for
computer-assisted art.
The craftspeople who created this album made a few more,
which
while intriguing, were nowhere near as impressive. Then
there
was silence for almost a decade.
When I was thirty, that moviemaker rose from the dead to
create an
incredibly anticipated "masterpiece", making use of state of
the
art computer technology. Unfortunately, without plot, and
an
almost overwhelming CG presence causing a cartoon-like
atmosphere of
unreality, the anticipation far outstripped the experience.
Not that
I can't say I'm chomping at the bit for more.
When I was thirty, those musicians rose from the dead to
create an
incredibly anticipated Work Of Art, making use of state of
the Art
computer technology. However, the attempt at fusion of
classical and drum
'n bass and jazz (trip-flop?) can't quite hold a tune, and
the anticipation
outstripped the experience. Not that I can't say that in
the event that
Art of Noise return to the One True Manifesto ("And so
modern music goes
round in this small circle, struggling in vain to create new
ranges of
tones. This limited circle of pure sounds must be broken,
and the infinite

Such loss... but this time I didn't cry in the bathroom like
I did for the
loss I felt when I heard Tom Jones and "Kiss" for the first
time, when
genius antipop sank into crappop.
Redemption is around the corner. Present me with Noise, the
effort to
translate the unexpected beauty in the sound of reality
around us into
melody through technology, not a whole lot of d'nb loops
over pretty
strings (can [or should] anyone say elevator Noise?).
Present me with THE
TIMBRE OF MATHEMATICS, and THE RHYTHM OF MACHINES. Present
me with THE
NONTRADITIONAL, aka THE FUTURIST. Should the best part of
the album really
be sweet, filtered interjections from John Hurt?
The skill is not in doubt. The production values are still
high. The aim,
the goal, the purpose....... why is this seduction
considered an Art of
Noise?

Latest issue of Raygun magazine :
"Orbital meets Art of Noise"
Paul Hartnoll talks with Paul Morley and Anne Dudley about drum machines,
Hatnoll's early punk days and how he switched over from liking the Dead
Kennedys to rap and fell in love with brother Phil's copy of "Beat Box"; how
both groups have been able to have the upper hand over the music industry
for so many years, commercialism, and both groups' love of Kraftwerk.
Paul Morley (AON) ----- "You talk about Kraftwerk. I consider Kraftwerk to
be Group Zero. In the true history of music, they're the most important
thing, as opposed to the other history of music where Elvis Presley was the
most important."
Paul Hartnoll (Orbital) ----- "Kraftwerk is where it really all started."
Paul Morley (AON) ---- "And indeed where it will all finish."
For the ZTT list :
Got all three Amplified custom CD's in the mail. Quite pleased. I love the
opening of "A Time To Hear (What languages are those voice samples in ? It
sounds like Italian and Japanese.) " and "Who's Afraid of Scale". Why is it
that some demo tracks sound better than the released versions ?
As far as the "flaws" are concerned, I mean, what the fuck do you expect ?
They're demos for crying out loud; of course they're going to have glitches
in them !

the original was imported and two 'shops' with illegal pressings, where they
simple hardcopy both CD and front page! These illegal CDs are sold at 1.5 -
3.0 $ each - with gradual rebates, dependent on the number of CDs you

Ah well, I guess I will have to wait until I return the the UK in August to

ps I heard a section of the album on Japanese TV yesterday and I thought the

Why John Hurt?
"1984?" "Love and Death on Long Island"?
Why "metaphor on the floor" (10)? Why "the floor"?
Is it the "Disco floor (to dance and act out AoN as a metaphor)?" Or, is
the floor in a literal meaning? to be trampled and walked over? Or, is
there still another explanation?
Cheers * Maggie

"4 on the floor" (or "4 to the floor") refers to a kick drum that hits on
every beat in 4/4 time. Remember elementary music theory?
People often use "4/4" and "4 on the floor" interchangeably to describe a
house/disco beat. Such a rhythm pattern actually consists of a bit more
than just a 4-beat time signature or monotonous kick drum pattern, but I
digress. The implication in this case is just that the remix is danceable.
I'm sure, however, there is probably some deeper meaning than just a play
on words, Morley being the clever devil that he is...

Yes, but I am not sure what your train of thought is.
I have the expression in connection with cars that have four acceleration
positions though.

Hi everybody,
As already mentioned on this list, the Buggles' Plastic Age is rereleased
and it is great! The booklet has lots of rare photo's from Mr. Downes and
Horn. Also included is a Buggles-autobiography by Geoffrey Downes! And of
course the 3 bonus tracks (with the fantastic demo version of "Johny on the
monorail") are a must-have for every Buggles/TCHorn diehard.
Now let's wait another 20 years for the US promo-only remixes "Clean Clean"
and "Living In The Plastic Age" to be released on cd. Oh, then also include
the French 12" remixes from "On TV" and "Lenny"........
Some Frames updates:
Frames in the USA: Pavement Tune - US promo cd5 ZTT U5P-1501
Frames in Ireland: Magic Hand - 10"
Till next time,
Henry

They just liked his voice? Wanted something very masculine to contrast
with the wispy female singers.

"Four on the floor" is a term for a 4/4 drumbeat.

Hey Phobrek !
Are you still on this list ? I know that it has been forever since the
last time you have written to me, but I have finally finished dubbing your
AON video that you had sent me a check for. I truly apologize that it has
taken such a horrendoulsy long amount of time, but my VCR has been having
loads of problems lately (tapes being continously eaten; etc.) . I hope that
you understand.
Anyways, I have lost your e-mail and home address, so I was wondering if you
could send those to me ASAP.
Thanks,
NoiseWerker (Josh)

Hey Noisemakers !
Raveworld (raveworld.net) is premiering the new "Metaforce" video on
saturday, and they are also having a contest where the winner will receive
signed lithograph prints from the video.
They're also showing footage next week from the ruins of Woodstock '99.
