  8. I remember in the eigthies, when I every week worked hard on finding the
  9. newest British chart. This, to be updated on ZTT's new entries and new
  10. number one singles. However, some time have passed with very little ZTT
  11. activity. But this year has allready brought 2 relative big chart hits. The
  12. recent weeks have produced both 3-4 weeks for LEILANI and this week brought
  13. 808 State and MC Tunes in updated 99-versions to a 53 place!
  14.  
  15. Good luck to ZTT and our list for more evoluation in 1999 (Art of Noise
  16. should have a chance!)

  37. album in the U.S.
  38. The catalog number from UNI will be UD 53235 for CD and UC 53235 for the
  39. cassette.  The release date is....
  40. JUNE 15th!

  60. According to Ad Age, MTV and VH-1 are combining forces to create a new music
  61. site that's code-named "The Buggles Project".  (I assume this is just an
  62. oblique reference to the fact that "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first
  63. video MTV ever aired...if so, that might mean they plan to serve up lots of
  64. streaming media...)

  194. Well if you were thinking of mailing me some questions, it's too late -
  195. I met with Anne, Paul, Trevor and Lol of Artofnoise version 3.0 last
  196. week for my interviews...  These will be published as features in DJ
  197. magazine (and possibly elsewhere) and unfortunately I wont be able to
  198. post text of the interviews to the list until after they have been
  199. published (May) as this will break copyright...
  200.  
  201. But in the meantime, I can give you my own answers or best-guesses for
  202. the questions that were asked, which were...
  203.  
  204. Q: When do the singles / album come out in quantity?
  205.  
  206. A: The date everyone seems to be sticking to is June 15.  Not sure on
  207. the singles.  There'll be a new official website, which may have more
  208. info...
  209.  
  210. Q: I'd love to see a discussion between Anne and Trevor on how the 
  211. technical aspects of Art of Noise have changed since 1983. The "old" AON
  212. was pretty darn advanced in terms of style and technical production in
  213. 1983. 
  214.  
  215. A: I spoke to Trevor and Lol for about 90 minutes on this subject, so
  216. check out the features!
  217.  
  218. Q: While "Dream On" is a beautiful single, I'm wondering how they are
  219. keeping AON a "cutting" band. (Having not heard the rest of the album, I
  220. confess this may be obvious when "Seduction" finally comes out.)
  221.  
  222. A: Yes, it will certainly become obvious!
  223.  
  224. Q: For Paul / Trevor: can we expect a litany of remixes a la the old ZTT
  225. of mid-80s? 
  226.  
  227. A: There are literally zillions of remixes by the band in the can from
  228. the new album, whether or not they'll see the light of day is anyone's
  229. guess.  Trevor said it could have easily been a double album.  I'm
  230. assuming they'll bow to commercial pressure and have outside people mix
  231. their work though for singles...
  232.  
  233. Q: Given how the universe has changed, you don't do your own mixing
  234. anymore, so what bands would they tap for mixes? The mid-90s remixes of
  235. old FGTH tunes were rather sad with the exception of Jam & Spoon's
  236. "Relax" mixes. (Personally, I can see Crystal Method and possibly
  237. Faithless doing a great job with AON's style. Would also love to see the
  238. Pet Shop Boys take a stab at this.)
  239.  
  240. A: I didn't actually ask this question, although Trevor certainly seems
  241. to be a fan of DJ Shadow, Dr Dre and the Prodigy...
  242.  
  243. Q: Please slap anyone associated with ZTT/AON for that deplorable "Drum
  244. & Bass Collection" release. :-)
  245.  
  246. A: Why would I? Neither AoN nor ZTT were involved in this (it was China
  247. Records material released on China Records)
  248.  
  249. Q: Any plans to re-release some of the concert / live footage on DVD?
  250.  
  251. A: Although some kind of DVD project was considered for TSOCD, ZTT do
  252. not own the rights to the Visible Silence shows...
  253.  
  254. Q: Another obvious question: what instruments are they using today? Is
  255. this release heavy on samples or more in line with traditional AON of
  256. creating their own signature sounds?
  257.  
  258. A: I don't think I'd be giving too much away if I said new signature
  259. sounds have been created...
  260.  
  261. Q: Videos? Recognise the pusillanimous MTV market in the US would never
  262. play them, but hope springs eternal...
  263.  
  264. A: Believe it or not there's a lot of video footage in the can, thanks
  265. to Lol.  Not sure if it'll leak out tho...

  267. Q: Concert plans?

  269. It's safe to say that some members of the band love the idea and other
  270. are a little more reserved...

  272. Q: Could you ask why J.J. is not involved in this project.  To me i
  273. thought he was the Genius in AON...

  277. Q: Why all the www.ztt.com secrecy on the Art of Noise?

  283. A: Becuase it was never intended as a 'proper' release - they leaked it
  284. out (as a test of the water I reckon)...

  323. meant they could have got a legit release for them, so be thankful in a
  324. way...

  326. Q: Has Lol adn Anne worked together on other recordings that: Toys
  327. Soundtrack, Rod Stewart "Spanner in the Works", Tina Turner "Wildest
  328. dreams", Cher "It's a man's world"?

  330. A: I think so...  talked with Trevor and Lol about obscure stuff like
  331. Hit The Box, Leave It and History Mix, which was fun!  BTW, Is there an
  332. up-to-date TH production list on the WWW somewhere?

  334. Q: If hope the album is full of information on the tracks, musician and
  335. magicians! Or is it Paul Morley-style resulting in full booklets with
  336. slogans and mystery?

  465. year history that involves a nine year creative gap could warrant a
  466. biography.  I'm having enough trouble getting a Yoko Ono biography off
  467. the ground - any friendly publishers or advice out there?!

  469. Q: Has The Art of Noise retained the classic "found sound" and wild 
  470. sampling approach that has made them famous, or have they adopted a 
  471. totally new sound ?

  476. albums that were released after The Art of Noise broke up ?

  493. web site so secretive ?

  495. A: I'm surprised people think it's secretive...  perhaps it is in
  496. relation to the virtual store-fronts of other record company websites...
  497. I just look at it and see it as a multimedia extension of the early
  498. record sleeves personally...  In a way, if they're annoying the hell out
  499. of people with cryptic sloganeering then they must be back on form!

  538. I don't think I saw this posted before, but I was checking out the official
  539. Andrew Poppy web site and it had some interesting news from September of 98:
  540.  
  541. Stop the Press (a rumour): Poppy and Ensemble to support Art of Noise in
  542. 1999 touring extravaganza.
  543.  
  544. The current news from 2/99 is written in the first person so it seems as if
  545. Mr. Poppy is writing the updates himself.  If so, it would make it seem like
  546. a very valid rumour especially since we know (thanks to Ian's sneak preview
  547. interview) that the AON are considering touring.  That would be quite an
  548. interesting show indeed!

  571. Well I got chatting and heres what I've recently sent:

  574. Thankyou for your email. Actually, I would like to be able to suggest to 
  575. TOTP2 that they should show some footage of a mildly (ahem, ztters!) 
  576. successful band called 'Propaganda' (who were around around in 1984/85 on 
  577. the ZTT label) with the main aim of the exercise being that they are just 
  578. about to release a brand new album with new songs.
  579. They were and are a group based in London and Dusseldorf, Germany.
  580. TOTP2 have shown much of FGTH (also on ZTT) who were around at the same 
  581. time, so why not Propaganda?
  582. If you could pass this suggestion on I would be thankful, if not I might 
  583. have to complain to Des at POV :)

  812. For those who like Trevor Horn, I finally purchased the pre-Buggles album
  813. "Star To Star" from Chromium (and a 12" as well).  It was released in '79.
  814.  
  815. Chromium features TCH, Goeff Downs (the second Buggles), Ann Dudley and
  816. Luis Jardim.  TCH sings on some tracks along with two female voices.
  817. The album is somewhere between the Buggles, G. Moroder and Rah Band (for
  818. those who remember this kitsh '80s band).  I suspect one of the females
  819. being the singer of "Rah Band".  If not, it is nearly the same voice.
  820.  
  821. It is always interesting to hear what TCH did before the Buggles and his
  822. ZTT works.
