Subject: (ztt) ZTT on the British chart
Date: 01 Mar 1999 11:58:36 +0100
Hello list,
I remember in the eigthies, when I every week worked hard on finding the
newest British chart. This, to be updated on ZTT's new entries and new
number one singles. However, some time have passed with very little ZTT
activity. But this year has allready brought 2 relative big chart hits. The
recent weeks have produced both 3-4 weeks for LEILANI and this week brought
808 State and MC Tunes in updated 99-versions to a 53 place!
Good luck to ZTT and our list for more evoluation in 1999 (Art of Noise
should have a chance!)

According to Ad Age, MTV and VH-1 are combining forces to create a new music
site that's code-named "The Buggles Project". (I assume this is just an
oblique reference to the fact that "Video Killed The Radio Star" was the first
video MTV ever aired...if so, that might mean they plan to serve up lots of
streaming media...)

From: Ian Peel <ian@nutopia.demon.co.uk>
Subject: (ztt) Re: Ask questions to AoN!
Date: 08 Mar 1999 23:53:01 +0000
Well if you were thinking of mailing me some questions, it's too late -
I met with Anne, Paul, Trevor and Lol of Artofnoise version 3.0 last
week for my interviews... These will be published as features in DJ
magazine (and possibly elsewhere) and unfortunately I wont be able to
post text of the interviews to the list until after they have been
published (May) as this will break copyright...
But in the meantime, I can give you my own answers or best-guesses for
the questions that were asked, which were...
Q: When do the singles / album come out in quantity?
A: The date everyone seems to be sticking to is June 15. Not sure on
the singles. There'll be a new official website, which may have more
info...
Q: I'd love to see a discussion between Anne and Trevor on how the
technical aspects of Art of Noise have changed since 1983. The "old" AON
was pretty darn advanced in terms of style and technical production in
1983.
A: I spoke to Trevor and Lol for about 90 minutes on this subject, so
check out the features!
Q: While "Dream On" is a beautiful single, I'm wondering how they are
keeping AON a "cutting" band. (Having not heard the rest of the album, I
confess this may be obvious when "Seduction" finally comes out.)
A: Yes, it will certainly become obvious!
Q: For Paul / Trevor: can we expect a litany of remixes a la the old ZTT
of mid-80s?
A: There are literally zillions of remixes by the band in the can from
the new album, whether or not they'll see the light of day is anyone's
guess. Trevor said it could have easily been a double album. I'm
assuming they'll bow to commercial pressure and have outside people mix
their work though for singles...
Q: Given how the universe has changed, you don't do your own mixing
anymore, so what bands would they tap for mixes? The mid-90s remixes of
old FGTH tunes were rather sad with the exception of Jam & Spoon's
"Relax" mixes. (Personally, I can see Crystal Method and possibly
Faithless doing a great job with AON's style. Would also love to see the
Pet Shop Boys take a stab at this.)
A: I didn't actually ask this question, although Trevor certainly seems
to be a fan of DJ Shadow, Dr Dre and the Prodigy...
Q: Please slap anyone associated with ZTT/AON for that deplorable "Drum
& Bass Collection" release. :-)
A: Why would I? Neither AoN nor ZTT were involved in this (it was China
Records material released on China Records)
Q: Any plans to re-release some of the concert / live footage on DVD?
A: Although some kind of DVD project was considered for TSOCD, ZTT do
not own the rights to the Visible Silence shows...
Q: Another obvious question: what instruments are they using today? Is
this release heavy on samples or more in line with traditional AON of
creating their own signature sounds?
A: I don't think I'd be giving too much away if I said new signature
sounds have been created...
Q: Videos? Recognise the pusillanimous MTV market in the US would never
play them, but hope springs eternal...
A: Believe it or not there's a lot of video footage in the can, thanks
to Lol. Not sure if it'll leak out tho...
Q: Concert plans?
It's safe to say that some members of the band love the idea and other
are a little more reserved...
Q: Could you ask why J.J. is not involved in this project. To me i
thought he was the Genius in AON...
A: Couldn't get a straight answer out of them on this one!
Q: Why all the www.ztt.com secrecy on the Art of Noise?
A: Secrecy? I'd call it Morleyism back to it's prime...
Q: Why isn't the new 12" public available?
A: Becuase it was never intended as a 'proper' release - they leaked it
out (as a test of the water I reckon)...
Q: Is it ZTT's official comment that the MP3 file on
http://home.earthlink.net/~themgnt/dream.htm should be removed?
A: I have no idea... somehow I doubt it... (privately email me the
address the statement came from if you want and I'll give you my best
guess)...
Q: Any release dates? Any release dates that we can believe in?
A: see above
Q: Have the other Art of Noise persons (Gary Langan and J.J.Jeczalik)
been invited to this new project?
A: see above
Q: Now that old groups are reappearing! What about the Buggles? There
have been talks on releases of old demo sessions between Trevor Horn and
Geoffrey Downes!
A: New Trevor album coming in September accorind to the ZTT website...
Q: Any biography on its way?
A: Of ZTT or AoN? Or both? Interested to hear people's views/interest
levels on this one...
Q: The idea of re-union, was it to redo old themes or to make only new
tunes?
A: New tunes, for sure...
Q: Has it been difficult both to forget Into Battle With The AoN and
make new tunes; at the same time as new tunes were made, and to keep
calling the group Art of Noise?
A: I don't think they would have make the new tunes if the name hadn't
meant they could have got a legit release for them, so be thankful in a
way...
Q: Has Lol adn Anne worked together on other recordings that: Toys
Soundtrack, Rod Stewart "Spanner in the Works", Tina Turner "Wildest
dreams", Cher "It's a man's world"?
A: I think so... talked with Trevor and Lol about obscure stuff like
Hit The Box, Leave It and History Mix, which was fun! BTW, Is there an
up-to-date TH production list on the WWW somewhere?
Q: If hope the album is full of information on the tracks, musician and
magicians! Or is it Paul Morley-style resulting in full booklets with
slogans and mystery?
A: Why would it be anything other than the latter?!
Q: Does ZTT consider any friendly attitude towards this ztt-MailingList?
I mean any pre-release information? Possibilities to buy or get (promo)
items?
A: I delved into the ZTT WWW site last week and there's plenty of talk
there of on-line ordering for rarities in the pipeline...
Q: Or at least some indication from them, that they consider us as
customers?
A: I don't think there's any band that doesn't consider net users as
customers, even if they don't directly communicate with them...
Q: Did Godley/Creme ever wrote a song intended for 10cc after "How dare
you? Or where they thinking "Consequences" right after it's
compeletition !
Q: How did Lol find it "guesting" with his former bandmates again on
"Meanwhile". Was there ever a serious discussion about a full reunion ?
Q: What are Lol's favourite works with "10cc" and "Godley/Creme" ?
A: Sorry, the talks with Lol stayed very AoN and my knowledge of 10cc /
G&C wouldn't have upheld a decent conversation on the matter either!
But I must say he was a very friendly and approachable interviewee...
Q: Collaborations - how do they select collaborators and remixers? Who
else would they consider working with?
A: see above
Q: re-releaseing older, impossible-to-find mixes and B-sides
A: Unlikely, but I didn't ask about it...
Q: Feelings/opinions regarding ownership rights due to label changes
from ZTT to China and back. Is there any interest at ZTT in
obtaining/licensing the rights to the China-owned material?
A: Again, I didn't want to ask about this as I wanted to talk about
music more than business... I cant ever imagine ZTT wanting to buy the
rights to the China material tho, or China wanting to give them up, for
that matter!
A: views on internet and the Art of Noise - fan pages and mail lists
Q: Didn't really talk about the fan stuff as there was enough
dis/information on the official AoN site to talk about!
Q: Transition from sampling noises and the Rosollo "art of noises"
manifesto to making music regarding the lessened use of samples/noises
as their music progressed
A: I'm falling asleep now, it's midnight....
Q: are there any tour plans?
A: above!
Q: delays in album and single releases
A: It's a Trevor production - what more do you need to know!
Q: Does newer technology make better music? Is the Fairlight still used
or has it been superceded and by what?
A: ace question and a couple of them were almost tempted to answer yes!
Q: Any possibility of enhanced-CD releases?
A: yes there is actually, but as this one LP took two years, I'm not
holding my breath...
Q: Why hasn't J.J. Jeczalik or Gary Langan returned to the group ?
Do they still keep in touch with everyone else ?
A: I dont think they keep in touch greatly, no...
Q: Just what exactly is Lol Creme's role in the group?
A: Paul doesn't know (!) and I'm not sure Lol does either (!), but the
more he talked, the more influential I realised he had been...
Q: What about Paul Morley; has he learned how to play any instruments
yet?
A: Why would he? His art is in his words...
Q: Why has it been so long since we have heard from Art of Noise ?
A: Anne was certainly surprised when I mentioned it had been nine years!
Q: Will there be a tour in support of the new album ? If so, are there
any U.S. dates ?
A: see above... but I hope they play England first...!
Q: Will ZTT or China ever release a video compilation of Art of Noise ?
A: Didn't touch on this....
Q: How did this reunion come about ?
A: In a way that's the crux of my features... Paul and Trevor had
different answers on this (I interviewed them separately), so I'll have
to keep you in suspense...
Q: Is this reunion for real, or is this just a one-off thing for old
time's sake and the purpose of making more money (like the Sex Pistols
or Fleetwood Mac reunions) ?
A: I really do think they did it for fun!
Q: Will the "Dream On" single be released commercially ? The promo
copy was very hard to find.
A: I doubt it will, in the same form as the promo...
Q: Are there any more reissues planned from The Art of Noise ?
Perhaps a singles/remixes/B-sides box set ?
A: Didn't ask this... wanted to talk about NEW music!
Q: Will the Art of Noise ever publish a biography or make a documentary
showcasing their achievements to electronic music ?
A: MTV UK & Ireland are thinking about a film... I'm not sure a sixteen
year history that involves a nine year creative gap could warrant a
biography. I'm having enough trouble getting a Yoko Ono biography off
the ground - any friendly publishers or advice out there?!
Q: Has The Art of Noise retained the classic "found sound" and wild
sampling approach that has made them famous, or have they adopted a
totally new sound ?
A: new new new...
Q: What does Anne think about the all of the endless remixes and the
albums that were released after The Art of Noise broke up ?
A: I think the word is horrified...
Q: Will The Art of Noise also go back to being a high-class production
team for other artists (like they were in the beginning) ?
A: somehow I doubt it, although I'm sure they'll all work together again
at some point...
Q: Can we expect any more wild collaborations with anyone ?
A: Well Salt Tank, Roger Dudley and Gregg Jackman and (if Paul Is to be
believed) Thereza Bazarre were involved in this new LP... not very wild
though, are they...
Q: Why doesn't ZTT respond to anyone's e-mail, and why is the new AON
web site so secretive ?
A: I'm surprised people think it's secretive... perhaps it is in
relation to the virtual store-fronts of other record company websites...
I just look at it and see it as a multimedia extension of the early
record sleeves personally... In a way, if they're annoying the hell out
of people with cryptic sloganeering then they must be back on form!

I don't think I saw this posted before, but I was checking out the official
Andrew Poppy web site and it had some interesting news from September of 98:
Stop the Press (a rumour): Poppy and Ensemble to support Art of Noise in
1999 touring extravaganza.
The current news from 2/99 is written in the first person so it seems as if
Mr. Poppy is writing the updates himself. If so, it would make it seem like
a very valid rumour especially since we know (thanks to Ian's sneak preview
interview) that the AON are considering touring. That would be quite an
interesting show indeed!

Well I got chatting and heres what I've recently sent:
Dear Visakha Karunaratne,
Thankyou for your email. Actually, I would like to be able to suggest to
TOTP2 that they should show some footage of a mildly (ahem, ztters!)
successful band called 'Propaganda' (who were around around in 1984/85 on
the ZTT label) with the main aim of the exercise being that they are just
about to release a brand new album with new songs.
They were and are a group based in London and Dusseldorf, Germany.
TOTP2 have shown much of FGTH (also on ZTT) who were around at the same
time, so why not Propaganda?
If you could pass this suggestion on I would be thankful, if not I might
have to complain to Des at POV :)
Thanks,
Mr. John McCormick.

able to enjoy these records. I posted that I was interested in a trade and one
of you on this list had aggreed to copy the FGTH CDs and singles that I needed
to replace the LPs that I was tradeing off. However, I have lost the post

my FGTH records.
Could the proper party please contact me with the progress of the trade

Ho,
For those who like Trevor Horn, I finally purchased the pre-Buggles album
"Star To Star" from Chromium (and a 12" as well). It was released in '79.
Chromium features TCH, Goeff Downs (the second Buggles), Ann Dudley and
Luis Jardim. TCH sings on some tracks along with two female voices.
The album is somewhere between the Buggles, G. Moroder and Rah Band (for
those who remember this kitsh '80s band). I suspect one of the females
being the singer of "Rah Band". If not, it is nearly the same voice.
It is always interesting to hear what TCH did before the Buggles and his
ZTT works.
For fans only.
Emmanuel

AB-CD is offering a CD single called "Game Of Life" by Boondox & Propaganda,
released in February 1999 on Incognito Records.
Has this something to do with THE Propaganda?

afternoon all.
my (VERY) long awaited updated spares list was almost finished, when..
...BANG! my monitor blew up.
as it's specific to my graphics card, i can't just plug in any old
monitor,
so i'm pretty stuck without it.
so, just to let people know that
1. it WILL be up soon (assuming it's just a blown fuse or something
simple).
i guarantee that there's something for everyone on it - including some
VERY
rare items.
it's currently over 30 pages long, and i have lots more to add...
2. i'm not ignoring people that are trying to get hold of me. i can only
get to
check my email every 2-3 days by using someone else's machine...
normal service will be resumed as soon as possible...
cheers.
