Subject: (ztt) AON: Tripping on Lol & J.J.
I have a few questions regarding Lol Creme and J.J. Jeczalik.
1) Trevor had already known Lol from back in the day when he
appeared in the "Cry" video by Godley & Creme (this is mentioned in
the "Daft" liner notes). If Trevor knew him already, then why did AON
place an ad in a newspaper looking for an artist an a video director ?
Can someone say waste of money?
2) There is a member of Arkana (the group who coincidentally remixed
"Yebo") named "Lola Creme". Is this the same person as Lol, or is this
one of his relatives ?
3) Since Ian Peel decided to provide as little useful information
possible in his DJ Magazine article (please Ian, don't take this
the wrong way; I don't mean any offense by this, but I do think that a
lot of important questions were left unanswered) , can someone give
any insight as to why J.J. Jeczalik didn't return for this project
(I heard from AMG that he decided to retire from the music business) ?

Does anyone know where AON obtained their original masks from ?
I would love to buy some of them. Are they still being made ?

I can't find any JJ bio information on AMG's site, for what it's worth. They
don't even list artofsilence.

He didn't just "know" Lol, he produced the Godley & Creme History Mix
and the song Cry. JJ did quite a bit of work on the History Mix as
well. Find it in a cut out bin somewhere -- the first two tracks are
really just AON remixing 10cc. It's much sillier and less spooky than
Who's Afraid, but IMHO, it's the "lost" ZTT AON record.

I'm sure they wanted to explore their options. If they had received
additional response, you wouldn't have asked this question. Yes, it
seems to be quite silly to put out an advertisement and just hire
someone you've worked with before... but not if nobody else responds
to the ad. Corporations regularly advertise for positions which are
subsequently filled with already in-house staff if an outside person
with the appropriate qualifications cannot be found.

The question is, whatever happened to artofsilence? JJ's artofsilence
project wasn't the greatest, but certainly wasn't embarassing and West 4
was quite good.

I've recently seen the video to 'Wet Rubber Soup' [greetings to Brussels],
which is one of the tracks you mentioned, and it appeared to me that Godley &
Creme exactly were to music video what AON were to music audio!
>>If Trevor knew him already, then why did AON place an ad in a newspaper

I'm not sure if we've got to take that too serious. Maybe they asked him
and he first rejected them - so the ad might have been their insider way
to proof that they really needed him (if there really was an ad).
BTW, when I reconsider what the requirements were supposed to be, even if
it was serious, there'd actually only be one or two people in the whole
wide world who'd apply anyway...
>>2) There is a member of Arkana (the group who coincidentally remixed

Lalo Creme is Lol's son. (I think he also was in The Glam Metal Detectives.)
BTW, the singer of Arkarna is Ollie J, who's remixed Relax 1993.

Although I very much share the interest in the old-age, I think it's only
fair to AON (and more useful within the context of DJ Mag) to lay the
emphasis on present affairs.

I thought the whole album was really good (e.g. Messenger From Heaven),
and yet my favourite AOS track is the non-album 'Teach Me' (a real body
mover).

That's not the half of it. C+C Music Factory also ripped "Moments In
Love" for the track "Just a Touch of Love." Also, Chubb Rock has used AON
on more than one occasion.
(sadly) Markie Mark and the Funky Bunch blatantly ripped "Beat Box" on
one of their last popular (if that can ever be truly said) tracks. I'll
never forget the stumbling onto the video on MTV late one afternoon. They
were using "Beat Box" as a breakdown while slow motion footage was played
of everyone jumping into camera frame on a trampoline. I couldn't believe
it. I was torn between revulsion and respect for their momentary lapse into
good taste.
There is some rapper that sounds like the guy who did "Oh Carolina". I
wish I could be more specific about him, but, on a track that one of my
best friends has, this guy used one bar of "Peter Gunn" as a breakbeat. He
used it from Duane's guitar right into that classic drum roll.
There was, also, a minimalist industrial group called Kode-IV that used
various samples from the whole LP "Who's Afraid" along with "Crazy" by
Patsy Kline.
I'm sure there are still others, but, this is all I can think of right
now.
Sincerely,
- -- James S. Coward

As to the J.J. issue, this should clear things up as far as what the
man is doing these days. After all he actually wrote it.:

As far as the question about the presence of Lol Creme on the album
after a publicized search for talent: Just because you worked with someone,
doesn't mean that you remember -or know- all of that persons
qualifications. Besides, maybe they thought he was too busy doing other
stuff to think he would be interested. It's not like Trevor has Lol's
number included in his wallet contents "for just such an emergency...". Can
someone say looking for new blood?
Next up, the interview: do not knock Ian for focusing on the current
work. He does not work for VH-1 doing "Where Are They Now" installments.
AON's old work -however wonderful- is not relevant to present time. And the
present time is what any successful music mag is going to concentrate on.
You want history? Don't look for it in a pop culture mag. You wouldn't look
for pearls in a stagnant pond, would you?

LADIES & GENTLEMEN!!!!!
at long last, my long-promised (and possibly long-awaited) spares list is
now ready for your perusal and entertainment...
there are two lists:
1. the DANCE/TRANCE/AMBIENT.... list. look here for stuff by:
Andy Weatherall/Sabres/Two Lone Swordsmen/Lino Square/etc
Aphex Twin

Baby Ford
Bjork
Coldcut
808state
Future Sound of London
David Holmes
The KLF
Leftfield
The Orb
Orbital
The Shamen
Tricky
William Orbit
and MANY, MANY more...
2. the ROCK/POP/INDIE list. look here for stuff from the early 1980s onwards.
there are MANY mega/ultra rare items for sale, and this list is over
SEVENTY PAGES LONG (!).
it includes stuff from:
ABC, The Adventures, The Alarm, All About Eve, Aztec Camera, The Beautiful
South/The Housemartins, The Beloved, The B-52s, Bjork, Black, The Blow
Monkeys, The Christians, Lloyd Cole, Julian Cope, The Cure (LOTS!), Danny

Love, Icicle Works, Inspiral Carpets, INXS, James, Jesus & Mary Chain,
Jesus Jones, The KLF, New Order, Oasis, Portishead, Prefab Sprout, The
Primitives, Prince (LOTS!), REM, Roachford, Saint Etienne, Simple Minds

JImmy Somerville/The Communards, The Sundays, That Petrol Emotion, The Men
They Couldn't Hang, The The (LOTS!), U2 (LOTS!), Voice of The Beehive, ZTT
(and related artists) and MANY, MANY more that I don't have time to
mention...
take a look at both lists, as there's quite a lot of overlap with
dance-stuff in the rock/pop list, and rock/pop stuff in the dance list.
i guarantee that there's something in there for practically everyone.

It`s a track called Shout from 1994. It a lady singing and rapping, I
donno the name of the group, but I can find out. They use the Peter Gunn
sample and it was around the time Oh Carolina was popular too. I remember
some discussion on a radio program back then with the source of the sample
and who of the two who used the sample first.
The track is quite a party track. Not as corny as Marky Mark ao.
PS. I really hate him (them) for the sample of Loleatta Holloway `Love
Sensation`.
