dIGEST #62, 6-6-95

From jeffs@bgsuvax.bgsu.edu Mon Jun 5 17:38:58 1995
Subject: Dalet
Got my copy of Dalet today & I agree with the review in #61.
Good, but short. Probably just leftovers, a nice little bonus though & I'm
sure it'll be a collector's item.
Also, I didn't send any stamps or IRCs or whatever, just the corners from
the wrappers and a nice letter saying how many DIW albums I've bought &
how much I appreciate them putting out Zorn, Ulmer, etc.
I am impressed that all of Masada 1,2, and 4, and some of 3 were recorded
in one day. Damn, that's like 4 hours of music. Quite an achievement, like
Miles' Cookin/Workin/Steamin/Relaxin session.

What import are you talking about? Here are the different pressing/object:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
159 - EXECUTION GROUND: Pain Killer
1994 - Subharmonic (USA), SD 7008-2 (2xCD)
1995 - Subharmonic (USA), #1708 (2xCD)
1995 - Toy's Factory Records (Japan), TFCK-88731/3 (3xCD)
Note: the #1708 is a limited edition of 500 total: 250 being packaged in a
marble box, and 250 in a metal box; both box designs are by artist Rockit.
Note: the Japanese pressing adds an extra record which is a live concert
called: LIVE IN JAPAN, NOV. 94.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you mean that you have to possibility to get the Japanese pressing.....
If it is true, you are very lucky!!!!

As I understand it, the Japanese version contains a 3rd disc of
unreleased live material. Anyone know where I can order this or the
_Rituals: Live in Japan_ disc?

M.J. Harris is indeed Mick Harris of Napalm Death/Scorn/Lull/Painkiller.
If you like _Somnific Flux_ you might want to check out the new
Divination album, _Akasha_, which contains a very fine ambient track by
Mr. Harris, as well as a bunch of Laswell stuff. It's less dub-oriented
than the earlier Divination records.

I wondered that myself for awhile, until I compared liner notes from
Painkiller and Scorn and found that on each he gives thanks to his son
Joshua.
Also, he confirmed it at the Painkiller show.

Subject: M.J. Harris
I'm not sure what the initials stand for, but M.J. Harris is a member of
the band "Scorn" as is "N.J. Bullen" who is paired with Laswell on the
Subsonic 2 disc on Sub Rosa. Mr Harris seems to be active on both sides
of the Atlantic working with both Laswell and (in the one case where I
have actually heard him - and I have yet to hear Scorn) on an Italian
release entitled "Murder Ballads" with Martyn Bates (anyone remember
Eyeless In Gaza?) which I kinda like.
Does this help?

Subject: What is Jazz
The Knitting Factory's "What is Jazz Festival" is running June 19 - July 1.
What I would like from the New York hipsters out there who know the
schedule is a recomendation as to the day(s) which would be good to attend.
I had sort of marked Thursday 22nd (Charles Gayle, Don Byron, Will Hooker,
and Myra Melford) or maybe Friday 23 (Prima Materia); or sat 24 (David ware
and Henry Thredgill)
I've seen Mr. Gayle and David Ware, but am looking for recomendations as to
who else would be worth seeing (as the point of this is to find out about
people who you haven't heard.)
Thanks muchly.
