  21. Subject: Downtown Music Gallery on Zorn ML

  23. Downtown Music Gallery is on the Zorn Mailing List. We are the NYC record 
  24. store with close ties to the downtown music world . Bruce Gallanter is 
  25.  the authoritative historian and documentor of the downtown scene, 
  26. from the mid 1970's. We are know to get downtown cds first and at the 
  27. lowest price, we get them from the artists and have preferred service 
  28. from distrobuters. We have all Masada, Avant, Tsdik. We are also the 
  29. authorized mailorder supplier for Axiom records and the entire bill 
  30. laswell family of labels. We usually have the last copies of the out of 
  31. print lps from the usual suspects. We also have all elliot sharp cds. 
  32. We have a concert callender you can ask Bruce for his gig and cd picks as 
  33. well as trade tapes. We are NYC Downtown Music resource!!!

  37. Subject: The "Meta" Label -- a new Laswell project...

  39. Have y'all heard about this?  I was talking to a guy who works for
  40. Caroline, and he told me they'd be working with Bill Laswell on a new
  41. label-project called "Meta".  The Meta label will apparently be focused on
  42. spoken word projects, although I think there will be music accompanying the
  43. words...
  44.  
  45. Projects on the slate include work by Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, and a
  46. tribute to Bryon Gysin.

  64. The airline robber barons kept me from making it to the knitting factory to
  65. see three nights of greatness (as well as Xu Feng the night before...).
  66. Anyone know if any of these bands are playing anywhere else in the US?

  69. Also, to whoever it was who raved about the Vandermark Quartet, NRG
  70. Ensemble, etc. (did you mention the Flying Luttenbachers?) - do you know if
  71. they only play Chicago and surrounding areas?

  78. New release info 1) Cobra on Knitting Factory works is finally out
  79. 2)Daled by Masada is not for sale. It is however available to purchasers 
  80. of the three Masada CDs Alef,Beit and Gimmel for free by sending in the 
  81. coupons on those three CDs, instructions are in japanese
  82. 3) 6 new releases on the Tzdik label expected any day...more details to

  153. American Clave reissue (dist. by Rounder) titled "Conjure: Music For The
  154. Texts Of Ishmael Reed" <AMCL 1006> that was put together by Kip Hanrahan.
  155.  Featuring: Taj Mahal, Allen Toussaint, David Murray, Steve Swallow, Carla
  156. Bley, Lester Bowie, Kip, & Carman Moore.  with: Olu Dara, Jamaaldeen Tacuma,
  157. Billy Hart, Robert Jason, Elysee Pyronneau, Milton Cardona, Frisner Augustin,
  158. Puntilla Orlando Rios, Andy Gonzalez, Kenny Kirkland...... blah, blah,
  159. blah...  anyway well recommended.  I picked it up in '89 and loaned it out
  160. (never to be seen again) & have been looking to replace it ever since.

  169. Audiosports is Eye's rap group.  Apparantly pretty progressive for 
  170. Japanese rap, they sound more like Run DMC in 1986 than like anything 
  171. contemporary (let alone unusual new) in US or western European rap.  Only 
  172. for the Eye completist, I suppose.

  190. 1. Knitting Factory Works posted a message on the Usenet saying that they
  191.    shipped Zorn's "Cobra '92" on March 29. Has anyone seen it in any stores?
  192.    CDNow! lists 04/18/95 as a release date.

  194. 2. Has anyone else translated the kanji on Masada obi (or whatever you call
  195.    those slips that wrap around the spine of the CDs)? My Japanese teacher
  196.    roughly translated it as saying, "After buying the three Masada discs, send
  197.    your name, age, address, and 190 yen in postage to the address listed."
  198.    That's all I could get out of her before I left for my next class. Who
  199.    can confirm this?

  203. Hawaii isn't as backward as I thought it was. I actually saw the first six
  204. Tzadik releases on the Tower Records shelves. Then I saw who distributes
  205. the label: Koch International. At least that gives us isolated folk a
  206. fighting chance to see "Elegy" in the racks. Any brave soul out there
  207. invest their money into any of these discs? Share your thoughts please...
  208.  
  209. On a related note, will Pigpen return to the studio anytime soon?
  210. I'm quite eagar to see what Wayne Horvitz comes up with next. "V as in Victim"
  211. is a really great CD -- it's a lot harder than the President discs on Elektra,
  212. but Horvitz's penchant for hooks is still strong. I was disappointed with
  213. "Miss Ann." Somehow, it didn't have the ebb and flow of "Victim," and that
  214. cover of "Triggerfingers" deserved another take.

  226. A couple of new Avant discs have just turned up.  Has anyone heard them 
  227. yet?  One disc is by Ikue Mori, goes by the title of "Painted Desert," 
  228. personnel on it is Mori on drum machines, Marc Ribot and someone I'm not 
  229. familiar with on guitars.  The other new disc is by Steve Beresford & His 
  230. Orchestra, the title is something along the lines of "Signals for Tea Time."
  231. His orchestra is essentially Masada, except with a different drummer and 
  232. everbody sings...
