There's not a guitar on the *recorded* Masada, but live there was -
I've got a videotape (loaned out, otherwise I could give you *all*
the names) that is Zorn, Ribot, bass, and drums (not Baron, I don't
think) as Masada at the Knitting Factory. Pretty different sound,
IMO!

Masada has reconfigured in several different configurations, and although
Ribot hasn't recorded with the band, he's played in a couple of versions.
I have to admit that I'm not big on Masada, having seen three different
groupings over the past year and a half. Ribot, like the rest, was
notably restrained when I saw him with them.

Couldn't make it, unfortunately. And Arthur Doyle was playing the Cooler
the same night, and I didn't make that either.

Mike is quite right. Buckethead has not played under any other name since
he abandoned his "real" name (which can only be found on a Henry Kaiser
CD).

Subject: ribot and masada
Someone commented that Masada had no guitar in it, and while that remains
true for the recorded material, I believe there have been at least three
different Masada line-ups, at least one of which included Ribot (my
friends saw that one at the Black Cat in DC last summer), and another of
which included Billy Martin on drums instead of Joey Baron (my impression
was that this one toured Europe last fall).
It is important to keep in mind that with Zorn and the other Downtown
folks all being so incestuous that many different permutations are
experimented with before setting a final (studio) line-up.
Which leads me to my next point: someone else said they saw Xu Feng in SF
a couple of years ago. I wonder if the structure of that version is the
same as the recent one. Anyone know?
Lastly, Painkiller is coming to my humble town (Chapel Hill, NC) in early
May. This probably means a full fledged tour is in effect, since we
hardly rate such a show under normal circumstances. Does anyone have
tour dates? Is there a tour date source, online or otherwise, for Zorn
and these other folks?
Thanks for playing.

Subject: Zorn Tour Info?
Does anyone know of how to find out where John Zorn will be playing in
any of his various projects? I was lucky enough to see Masada once, and
I just found out that Painkiller are playing in Chapel Hill NC in May (a
lot of good that does me - I live in Rochester, New York.) Is there any
source that lists touring schedules for Zorn? Any help would be much
appreciated.
thanks,
Mitchell

Mike forgot to mention that I made him wear rubber gloves while he touched
it :-)
I forgot to mention in my earlier post on this that when I returned to
Japan and unsuccessfully tried to find more copies, I found a 3" CD single
off the album (!) that I have never heard about elsewhere. This is in
Patrice's Zorn discography. I also found other music from the same cartoon
show, but it is by Picky Picnic, and not all that interesting.

Subject: Painkiller's in the house
Just like to let anyone near Chapel Hill N.C. know that Painkiller
will be at the Cat's Cradle May 7. I bought my ticket already- 10 minutes
after I saw the schedule. Now if I could just scoop out my pants...
This sure is a unique sentiment; but I am interested in getting a copy
of Elegy. I have a number of interesting things to trade for it, including
such joy as a Masada Boot and a conversation I had with the old guy himself
afterwards- plus a tape of Greg Cohen opening the backstage door real fast
and knocking the tape recorder almost out of my friend's hand. Email me
and we'll set it up..... -Ben Tropy, Verbs of Prey

Does JZ have any future plans recording-wise with Laswell ? I have Praxis'
"Sacrifist" which is pretty wild...Never heard Painkiller though. Also, does
screaming Y. Eye ever actually sing ? He seems to be very distracting at
times. Occasionally (IMHO) he has a tendancy to kill a good tune.
[ *definitely* check out Painkiller. Not anything like Praxis,
though. -Matt ]

Glenn
