hello all!...i'm to receive my copy of the big gundown today...i had to
specially order it because there doesn't seem to be many zorn fans here in
tuscaloosa, alabama...sigh...does any one know if vernon reid, who somebody
told me played on the big gundown did any other work with zorn?...also, does
zorn authorize taping of his performances?...and, is there a fucking FAQ on
this list?...i feel like a moron asking all these questions...thanks for your

Subject: Signals
When I saw Naked City at Slim's in San Francisco in '89 or '90, Zorn was
definitely using hand signals somewhat similar to Zappa's. For the
jump-cuts he would hold up the number of fingers for the next section & (I
think) give a downbeat, like "go to section 3...NOW." He would also hold
up 4 fingers and lower them one at a time to count a new tempo, like a
silent equivalent of a punk singer yelling "1 2 3 4!"
This is just my own hazy recollection & conjecture. More stuff on Zorn's
conduction techniques can be found in the liner notes to Cobra (HatHut
version) & Locus Solus (Rift)...

Is this a new Painkiller release?
(Sorry, I just joined.)
A fine hello and good morning to all my fellow Zorn fans.
Matt
[ yes, matt, it is a new release, and it is
available 3 ways: 1) 2-CD American release
2) 2-CD special edition release
3) 3-CD import
