  18.     Hello once again.  Just a couple of things this time around...
  19.  
  20.     First of all, if anyone ever wants any back issues of
  21.      Zorn digests, I keep 'em all, so just mail me (mpj1@kepler.unh.edu)
  22.     -- NOT the list (zorn@unh.edu) and let me know which ones you
  23.     would like, and I'll send em right out to you.

  25.     Second of all, I, for one, like John Zorn, but there is so
  26.     much stuff of his out there in numerous different projects,
  27.     that I sometimes (a lot of the time) don't know what to buy.
  28.     So, what I wanted to suggest is this:  How about if people
  29.     posted reviews of CDs that you may have?  Not necessarily all
  30.     of them, but perhaps your favorite/least favorite.  I would like
  31.     to hear different people's opinions of different albums...Well,

  37. When I saw Masada here in D.C. (at the Black Cat) a couple of months ago, 
  38. Zorn told me there were going to be 3 Masada records coming out soon on 
  39. DIW.  I haven't seen them anywhere yet, though.  I'll find out what's up 
  40. over the holidays while I'm in Seattle (where there is a truly definitive 
  41. little record store for such things) or else when I go up to NYC in 
  42. mid-January.

  44. If you haven't seen Masada yet, they're worth traveling through blizzards 
  45. across several states, skipping meals to pay for the ticket, etc.  I've 
  46. seen them twice.  Lineup was Zorn, Dave Douglas (trumpet), Greg Cohen 
  47. (bass), Joey Baron (drums).  Very much a bop band.  Lots of very hot 
  48. tempos, intense improvisation, balanced with some truly haunting, very 
  49. open, slow compositions.  Both shows were among the best performances 
  50. I've ever seen by anyone.

  52. I've never seen any of the other incarnacations of Masada, which have 
  53. included Marc Ribot and a variety of other NYC players.  They're doing a 
  54. week of shows soon in the small room at the new Knitting Factory, if 
  55. anyone's going to the city....(KF's # is 212/219-3055).

  63. as far as i know, the only masada song currently available on any  
  64. format is included on the "klezmer '93" compilation, which also  
  65. includes performances by the hassidic new wave, the klezmatics, and  
  66. many others.  the masada song is really well done, 'tho i can't  
  67. remember the name of it offhand.  most (and possibly all) of the  
  68. tunes on the album - inclusing the masada song - were recorded live  
  69. at the knitting factory, nyc.  i wholeheartedly recommend picking up  
  70. this cd.  it is superb.
  71. i heard a rumor that zorn was starting up an american label. further,  
  72. the rumor was that one or two masada releases would be in the first  
  73. wave of albums put out by this label.  i can't confirm this, but i'd  
  74. be really excited if it were true.
  75. i saw masada live at the black cat in washington, d.c. a month ago.   
  76. without hesitation, it was the best show i've ever been to.  really  
  77. mesmerizing.  what's more, a guy was recording the show.  he seemed  
  78. to have the cooperation of the band, but i don't know if he was doing  
  79. it for personal use or for commercial release.
