You mean "The Return", and I have to say skip over this recording. It is a
little lackluster, Pat doesnt even recommend it. However there is a great
video from the same time (circa '87) of Pat with Joey and Harvie Swartz on
bass, it is called "Live at Ethels Place". Joey looks like a different
person with hair.

They have a tape trading section, and you can get all the latest gossip you

I know you posted this a long time ago--just weeding through old
messages and came across yours. actually, i went to a performance
of the Book Of Heads, which was by the way, incredible, and
afterwords marc ribot went through the score with me and explained
zorn's notation. very cool. ribot offered to fax me a copy of it,
which are written out on index cards for each piece, but don't have
the nerve to call him up and bug him about it.

when Eugene Chadbourne was out here, we talked about the Book of Heads,
and he said that there are many more that weren't on the CD, including
some of his favorites. He showed me a few of them, ranging from one that
was just a sequence of chords, to some of the crazier stuff, along the lines
of what's reproduced on the CD jacket.

I use the word 'mumbled' because he didn't make himself very clear and I
didn't want to dig into a topic about which he seemed to enjoy having an
attitude; I just wanted to get my order in (Company 91 vols 2&3 and three
pairs of socks) and let him go about his business. What I do remember had
something to do with his opinion that Zorn thinks he should be on the cover
of every magazine and should be in more demand and be making more money,
but that he didn't want to do what is necessary, from a business
perspective, to make that happen. Case in point: Tzadik doesn't seem to
send out any promo copies of their releases. My radio station, KGNU, has
not been able to get promos, even though we probably play more Zorn and
Tzadik than almost any station in the country.
I don't have enough experience with this situation to have a strong opinion
one way or another. I just enjoy the music and am willing to spend the
money and let the guys at Cadence deal (or not) with the politics. It might
help to explain, though, why distribution of Tzadik and Avant is so spotty.

I agree to a point. I am a long-time reader of Cadence and greatly
appreciate the high ethical standards to which you refer. I also
appreciate the very high quality of critical writing. I think, though,
that there is sometimes a danger, with this type of institution, that they
take themselves too seriously.

Tzadik sends out promos to about 15 radio stations and no one else. This is
because the company is run as a non-profit organization with EXTREMELY tight
budgeting to makes all ends meet. The artists all receive discs and are
encouraged to use them as they see fit; some, such as David Krakauer and
Mark Feldman, have been quite aggressive about getting promos out to
reviewers and radio. The same holds true for Avant (right now Eric
Friedlander has a post on rec.music.bluenote offering free copies of
"Chimera" to anyone with radio or media credentials. But a few more
stations have gotten Avant servicing because Sphere and DIW have their own
mailing lists, apparently.
It's also been extremely difficult to get Avant/DIW product lately. There
are numerous new DIWs available that have not been issued here as yet, for
instance, Ulmer's "Tales of Captain Black" and Derek Bailey's album with
Bill Laswell and Tony Williams. A friend of mine has had both for weeks,
but no store in New York has stocked them yet.
I've also heard rumors about difficulties between Cadence and Zorn, some of
which have nothing at all to do with business and which I would never, ever
repeat because they seem to be unsubstantiable. But at least when Zorn
(indirectly) asked that Cadence stop selling the Jazz Door boot of Masada,
they did.

well, not sure if this is the same exact version, but the tune does appear on his duo CD
with Jimmy Carl Black called "Pachuco Cadaver" which is mostly Beefheart "covers"
albeit seriously Chadbournized covers. this is available through the label:

All tracks on this disc are taken from previously released or forthcoming
releases. The Shea track is "The Land of Pure Illusions" from "The Tower
of Mirrors" CD (my favorite of his to date, BTW).
While on the subject of the Underwood comp, I thought I would mention that
I really don't need this disc. It's a fine introduction to a particular
aspect of the label (the more ambient side), but I know that sooner or
later I'll have all of the tracks on other discs, and I'll sacrifice my
impulse to have a complete Sub Rosa collection to my need to clear out
space. I paid US $10 for it, it's still in pristine condition, so if
anyone would care to offer approximately that amount, I'll throw in 1st
class postage (within North America, please). Naturally, it's still in
pristine condition in every way.
The story is about the same for Sub Rosa's "A Man of Sorrows" comp, but
that disc covers a broader spectrum of previously released stuff (e.g. from
Chas Hayward, Martyn Bates, or Peter Blegvad, to Paul Bowles or Ira Cohen,
to Zahava Seewald, to Lilith and Jardin D'Usure). If anyone would like
this, $7 seems like a nice price (incl. postage).

I just got a couple discs recently, Mark Dresser's "Force Green," and Zorn's
"Film Works II," and both feature what is referred to as "prepared piano."
The former disc's prepared piano is even performed by Zorn List member
Denman Maroney. Maybe he's like to explain, or anyone else, but I would
love to know why it is called such and where the derivation originated.
Thanks,

David,
The prepared piano was invented by John Cage. The first piece to utilize
this method of placing nuts, bolts, large wooden screws, bits of glass,
rubber, etc. on, in-between, under and through strings of the piano was
called "Bacchanale", written in 1938. Cage gave very specific instructions
on where and how the pieces of stuff were to be placed inside the piano,
and some other compositions by Cage using this technique include "The
Perilous Night" (1944), "Root of an Unfocus" (1994), and one of his
greatest pieces, "The Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano"
(1946-1948).
