Sorry this thread is long dead, but I was cleaning out my mail box and realized I forgot to reply to this. The list of Go-Go artists actually starts with Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers. Chuck Brown started Go-Go by extending the percussion break sections of R&B tunes, not unlike what hip-hop Dj's did, but he used a live band (This is a huge oversimplification but it gives you an idea). You should be able to find some of his stuff available on-line. Other bands that come to mind but are probably harder to find outside the DC area are; The Backyard Band, Experience Unlimited (E.U.), Ju Ju & Sugarbear, and Rare Essence, Little Benny, Maisha & The Hip Huggers etc.
Hope this helps,
Sorry It took so long, I can't keep up w/ y'all.
BTW I'm really enjoying the new Uri Caine Bedrock 3 CD (I think it's new), very cool. Has anybody else heard this?

1. I recently bought a cd called "World Library of Folk and Primitive Music: India" from the Alan Lomax collection. I cannot get this thing out of my cd player. I have fallen in love with it. Any other recommendations similar to this album?

2. For the people who have heard Zony Mash's studio albums and found them kind of stale in performance...please check out the new "Live in Seattle" cd. Picked it up last night. AMAZING! Timothy Young's guitar playing lays waste to Hendrix and Sharrock on this one.

3. Also, I was hoping to get some feedback on my music (from people who aren't relatives, friends and co-workers!). ....any feedback would be great, positive, negative, neutral....http://www.mp3.com/worldmisery

the discounted price. I'm a big fan of both Fantomas
and the Melvins but the (A) sound quality and (B) the
number of musicians playing make the Monsterwork a
literal mess... "Mess" is really a good word for it.
Maybe "soup" would be too.
I really love Fantomas and the Melvins, so it pains
me to say this but the ablum leaves a lot to be
desired. It's just dreadful. ...and disappointing.
By the way - the Melvins songs on the album are NOT
from the Trilogy they released on Ipecac. Anyone that
doesn't have "The Maggot" should give it a listen...

I enjoyed it for what it was - a goofy, rowdy free-for-all. I generally like Patton in theory a lot more than I like him in practice, though, and I wish he woulda kept his mouth shut during "Night Goat," cuz it doesn't seem like he knew all the words. Maybe that's not the point, but it's one of Buzz's better numbers. It was fun to hear the audience getting obnoxious and surly during Dave and Dale's hi-hat duet, though.
I need to buy more Melvins, that's for damn sure, and I was stupid not to see them last year. (But not as stupid as I was to miss the Prince show last night that Kurt was gloating about earlier, which I completely forgot about because it was barely promoted...)

If there is only one Melvins album to get right now
it's "the Maggot." The album is Melvins thru and
thru. Well thought out.

Do you mean the politics or the music? This far down the road supporting the Sandinistas seems pretty regressive but at the time they did look like a reasonable alternative to the usual run of US-backed regimes. As for the music, it's like London Calling pushed a bit further or the 80s equivalent of The White Album; in other words, the sprawl and eclecticism are part of the point. It does get a bit spotty towards the end but I don't think there are any outright failures.
Well, that might depend on how generous you are or not with their work. I love it myself- I think of it as sweet excess.
One of the stories behind it (which I tend to believe) is that they wanted out of their CBS contract and had three albums left to deliver so they thought that they could put out a triple album and be done with it. CBS didn't but it though and they were stuck with them until they broke up.
Best,
Jason

Well just in general, I've always though this was a beautiful sprawling mess

Highly recommend the Whitney Bi-Ennial now going on in New York- I've seen it twice already and will probably need to go again.
After seeing the Christian Marclay and Destroy All Monster exhibits, I started thinking of music (or its tools/components) being used in a visual medium as in galleries/musuems. Any other examples of that off-hand that anyone can think of?
This from BBC's R3 newsletter- thought there might be some interest here...
JAZZ ON 3 - Friday 19 April 23:30 to 1:00
Peter Br÷tzmann Tentet
Continuing this month's series of concerts recorded at the Austrian Saalfelden Jazz Festival, Jazz on 3 this week features the music of one of the heavyweights of European improvisation, saxophonist Peter Br÷tzmann.
CDNOW now has a release date for the new Naked City
live album as May 7th!
Is this more trouble with the art work or
something? I've been waiting for this album since
Feb.

I don't live in Kingston, but I've been there several times and I have colleagues who live there. By all accounts it's a very nice place to live - decent shopping centre, picturesque market place, right on the Thames and a twenty-five minute rail journey to London Waterloo, which as well as being in the heart of London is also where the Eurostar trains to Paris and Brussels depart from. Assuming the academic side of things is how you want it, Kingston is probably one of the nicest places to live outside of the centre of London and is definitely regarded as a desirable place to be.
Residents of Kingston feel free to point out any bad things about the place I've missed...

For those who have all (or nearly all) of Masada's

I like Live in Middleheim
and, of course, the 2001 Tonic CD...

Insofar as the coercive powers of government are to be used to insure that particular people get particular things, it requires a kind of discrimination between, and an unequal treatment of, different people which is irreconcilable with a free society.

And the interplay with Baron in this solo is brilliant.
I'd really like to listen to another version of Gevurah
(live or studio) but can't find it.
The main theme of Gevurah appears also at the end
of Karaim in LIVE AT TONIC, the mix is real genius!
Ciao
