Most of my personal Ra favorites, interestingly enough, are live sets.
'Nothing Is' is my favorite of his ESP discs - I return to it much more than to either volume of 'Heliocentric.' 'It's After the End of the World' on the German MPS label has some mighty wiggy synth excursions. 'Live in Montreux' is a long out-of-print 2LP set on Inner City that's worth the price if you find it - an extraordinary latter-day set that perches on the precipice between the earlier wildness and the latter day novelty swing band. 'Sunrise in Different Dimensions' on hat Art is similiar, if more conservative - though there's some incindiary alto from Marshall Allen, naturally - and might prove an ideal introduction for the newcomer (it certainly did for me).
Lucky me, I saw the Arkestra twice in the late '80s. The first time, I drove a buncha hours from San Antonio to Ft. Worth to see the band. You could talk your way backstage at the Caravan of Dreams pretty easily back then, so I did. Ra was holding forth for a crowd about the malleable nature of time. During a lecture at Harvard the previous week, he informed us, he stopped all of the clocks on campus simultaneously using the strength of his mind.
I grabbed one of the club's cheap-ass promo posters and got it signed by Ra, Gilmore, Allen, Pat Patrick, Danny Ray Thompson... treasured.

<DIV>I quite like the album, actually. Its got the patented old-school reverb so present on many Bungle and Bungle-related Cds, which may or may not be good, depending on preferences. The production is detailed but dark, with a general murkiness that serves the album well, I think. Its pretty menacing, not always in an obvious way. It rocks pretty hard, too. Its a grower, to be sure; I wasn't too into it the first time, but that's definitely been changing. Just don't expect Fantomas or Bungle - though I'm sure everyone will.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>It IS about 5,000 times more interesting than Faith No More, but that isn't really too hard; I do think they were one of the most overrated bands ever. About 10,000 times more interesting than the new Tool album, which is a conservative rating on my part. I find though, that most new rock music (not talking extreme metal here), that is, 'song-oriented' music, for the lack of a better term, falls pretty short these days.</DIV>

Oddly enough, I just got my copy in the mail today, and have it on REALLY loud as I read my email. Yes, what a fantastic album!!!! I only have a couple of other BoB albums -- Procession (Ogun vinyl) and Country Cooking (CD, can't remember the label). What else is available right now that I should jump on? And is Maxine McGregor's book still available anywhere?

visiting the pitchforkmedia site the eye fell on a review of "Is this it" by The Strokes a rock group being called the new Velvet Underground and stuff like that. Ryan Schreiber wrote the review, fortunately someone engaged himself in clarifying what should really be said about The Strokes, no similarities with VU neither with Lou Reed.
I thank You and I will thank Ryan too.

> I picked up a number of Black Lion releases (Hemphill, Ayler, >Braxton, Lake, AEC) yesterday for $2.99 a piece(!) at broinc.com
I meant to post this info earlier and forgot. I've been ordering off and on from Berkshire for about ten years and haven't had any problems with them; they can be a tad slow but heck isn't life too fast anyway? At times they've had some good inexpensive overstocks from Hat Art (McPhee's Tenor!), New World, Ocora, ASV, Harmonia Mundi, New Albion, ECM, Nonesuch, etc. Too bad I haven't found anything like this for rock/pop albums.
One thing to be careful about, though, is that some of the items may be imports that don't match your or at least my first conception. Some Charly reissues, for instance, were not the usual British Charly albums with good notes but bare-bones budget releases hardly worth even a few bucks. Also, some of the Prestige albums they've listed are similarly European budget compilations and not US Prestige releases. On the other hand, I got some dirt-cheap German Comedian Harmonist albums and a tango set that have practically no notes but some great music.

In all honesty, I have no idea what the acronym "CMJ" stands for, and neither
the cover nor the Editorial page give any clues. But the complete title is
"CMJ New Music Monthly" and can be ordered at 1-800-414-4CMJ.
Nice article with the Strokes, too.

For the two or three of you who don't get Bruce Gallanter's Downtown Music Gallery newsletters, some big news...
[from the newsletter]
So Zorn calls me up last week and says "Are you ready for some heavy news?!?" "Of course bubby, lay it on me" says I. So Zorn tells us that he is finally working on the long awaited Naked City Live cd (2 or 3 cd set, maybe?). I have been pestering him about it yearly since Naked City played their last four nights at the old Knit in September of '93. Zorn says he has received a bunch of great quality recordings from the entire history of the band. Naked City played quite a bit of inspired covers throughout their four year existence, few of which are available on their 5 in-print cds. Their covers included tunes by Live Skull, DNA, Beach Boys, Funkadelic, an amazing Rai song, Shirley Scott, film composers and Dizzy's "A Night in Tunisia". Naked City were by far the most exciting, intense, diverse, ultra-tight and incredible band of the nineties!!!
<BR>i'm working on a full review to be posted on ink19.com at some point by december, but in the meantime, i'd just like to say i think it's a very good album. I don't see "Eureka" being redundant compared to "Bad Timing", and "Halfway to a Threeway" wasn't a full length anyway. "halfway" being the only album not named after a roeg film, i believe. "Insignificance" shows O'Rourke's lyric-writing skill at a high level, and his music taking a slightly more hard-edged direction. It's much less "rock" than I think was expected, and it's not a gigantic departure from the stuff on Drag City. If you're tired of misanthropic pop music that plays with idioms and expectations, than just wait for his solo release on mego or atavistic.

That one is definitely in my all-time top 10. Cannibalism 1 is a good sampler though I enjoy all the early records which a lot of that comp is culled from: Monster Movie, Tago, Soundtracks, Ege. Delay (some of their earliest pre-debut recordings) is also a fine record.
A shame that the Can "reunion" never made it here to the States. The show that I caught with Damo Suzuki and Michael at the Cooler in '98 was a lot of fun. Damo came around and hugged everyone who was still there at the end at about 3AM.
I thought the bigger problem had been Misha's refusal to play the electric piano the Knit supplied for the gig, since his rider specifies an acoustic...?
