i recall discussion of the "jewel sleeve" a while back for compact cd storage and travel. they are rather expensive at jewelsleeve.com. has anyone found somewhere else to purchase them, or something similar? i'm going to europe for 6 months and would rather not leave my music behind...
Groove alla Turca is indeed a fine CD. Anyone who's interested in other modern Turkish music owes it to themselves to check out Replikas- a band that's very much akin to Krautrock. You can hear some song samples at: http://artists2.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/Replikas/ Their latest CD
(Koledoyuran) is available in NYC at Other Music. For anyone overseas, ReR in England also carries it (http://www.megacorp.u-net.com).
Another interesting local band there is Zen- also in the rock mode but pretty bonkers. They've had one of their CD's released here in the States by Ecstatic Peace! (they say that they still have copies of this available: http://www.smellslikerecords.com/ecstatic/).
There was also recently a good compilation of '60's and '70's Turkish rock/garage bands on Dionysus Records called "Hava Narghile": check out http://www.dionysusrecords.com/default.html
Sad to say, because the Turkish economy is in the dumpster (even more than the U.S. one) and because the local record companies are pretty lazy and/or corrupt, not a lot of this music is able to reach the Western world.

Sad to say, it's kind of hard to get a hold of their music outside of Turkey. The Ecstatic Peace! release is really the only thing available in the States and elsewhere at the moment. EP actually offered to release more of their material here but the band has been slow to get back
to them. If you do run across anything else by them, snap it and you'll be happy- they have about three or four other releases out. You might try to contact one of the labels that they've dealt with in Istanbul to see if they have anything else still in print available:

This is a great CD... Intresting, unique, ambitious, everything we look for in a release by Frith... I personally found the album profound... Although I don't listen to it too regularly...

You can hear clips of the new Ribot album at www.cheap-cds.com The album sounds a bit like his other solo album "Don't Blame Me.." It's certainly not as ambitious as Fred Frith's "Clearing" CD, and as a Ribot fan, I feel a bit disappointed... Perhaps he should leave the abstract stuff to Chadbourne or Bailey... They probably do it better, although the "Book of Heads" was an achievement of sorts... I was personally looking forward to an album filled with material like the song "Mochin" from Zorn's Bar Kokhba release... The album probably sounds much better on an actual stereo (not my computer) and perhaps listening to the entire songs will bring about a change in attitude...

Hi, I saw in ICE that two Ed Sanders solo albums were coming out on CD from Koch but can't find them listed in the four online dealers I checked. Anybody know if these actually appeared?
The evil corporate overlords at radio behemoth Clear Channel (see http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2001/05/30/clear_channel_employees/index.html and http://www.salon.com/ent/clear_channel/2001/08/08/antitrust/index.html) has given its stations a list of 150 songs to avoid. The most obvious one (The Cure's "Killing an Arab") is missing and some others probably all stations should avoid (Billy Joel, Dio) but I'd think that "War Pigs" and "My City Was Gone" are altogether appropriate.

Totally disagree that The Cure's "Killing An Arab" is the most obvious one!
Maybe for once the people behind this 150 songs-not-to-play-list did make their homework.
The lyrics of "Killing An Arab" have got nothing to do with racism or anti-Islamism - it's based on the novel "The Stranger" by Albert Camus.
The only reason which maybe, maybe, maybe would justify its ban is the title...

You and I may be fully aware of that but most people are not and there's nothing in the song to indicate that. The song can very easily (but not necessarily) be considered racist by somebody simply listening to it, the Cure's intentions or sources are pretty much irrelevant in such a case. My original point--something I was merely pointing out & not indicating my personal opinion either way--is that this is an obvious song for a "don't play" list, much more than the bulk of what's actually on it.
I tried cheap-cds once and the order came through fine. The catch, though, is that they add a $1.43 "handling fee" to every single item in addition to a shipping charge so their prices aren't as low as they seem initially.
CD Connection I highly recomend for mainstream/midlevel items but for imports and really tiny labels you should compare first. (Though they have most of those nice British Proper Records boxes at $25 each.) And if the order is over $100 the UPS shipping is free. I've done several orders with some pretty obscure items and always got everything ordered.

Well the reissues did make these more widely available: How much harder or more expensive would it have been to find an LP? At least now somebody can make a CD-R for you (something I would never support for an in-print release).
Konk Pack, the trio of Thomas Lehn, Tim Hodgkinson and Roger Turner, have just released their second disc on Grob and are touring the US for a month behind it. here's the tour schedule, complete with tentative dates. please forward it on to anyone who might be interested; many of these shows were set up on very short notice.
also, please don't e-mail me any questions, since not only does this mail contain all of my knowledge about the tour, but I'm in Germany until 10/8, and quite possibly won't see your mail until after I return. there's more info at www.churchofgrob.com.
go if you can; Thomas Lehn is one of the most exciting improv musicians in the world today. if you're at the Knit on the 8th, come say hi: I'll be there, thoroughly jetlagged.
