So I'm casually working my way through the crosswords in the current
issue of GAMES magazine (a US mass-market publication featuring a
variety of gameplay), when I come to Francis Heaney's 'Spell Weaving'
puzzle and see the following clue: "John Zorn's instrument (2 wds.)".
No, not "game calls".
Can a Zorn category on Jeopardy! be far behind?

I know neither Ribot or Cohen are touring with Waits, but Ribot told me he would
be playing with Waits for the NYC shows. That was months ago, however ... long
before I heard of any dates so who knows if it was booked or just planned. Cohen
I know less about. But it is all part of my rock and roll fantasy (yeah-uh yeah-
uh).

CD prices are a bit more scary here. Add half as much again for
those without credit cards and hence unable to buy except thru
local retail. (I'm assuming Mr Rizzi is referring to Tower Records in
London).
Something completely unrelated...
Leo Records, long a bastion of affordable and excellent UK
releases, have just started up a new label called (with tongue firmly
in cheek) "Golden Years of New Jazz". First batch of releases
(fresh out this week) are long-lost 70s and 80s cuts from Sun Ra,
John Tchicai, Anthony Braxton and the Ganelin Trio. Stop press
reviews are on (musings). As far as I know, they go for a tenner
each plus p&p, which is rather civilised.
Rich (who thinks sometimes it's best to shop local, even though
he's in denial about really wanting Harras and not having got it
because of the price)
Latest on (musings): reviews (with MP3s) of
new CD releases featuring, among others, John Stevens,
Chris Speed, Dave Douglas, Wayne Horovitz, Bobby Previte,
Francois Houle, Hans Tammen, Keith Tippett, Jerry
Granelli, Thurston Moore...

Hi there,
I recently wittnessed a concert of "The Young Philadelphia" in
Saalfelden/Austria.
"The Young Philadelphian" is a project featuring Marc Ribot and John
Zorn (among others... of course), the music is based on punk/noise, some
very funky parts and the harmolodic concepts of Ornette Coleman (...I
think so).
It was very funny to watch "people with taste" leaving their good seats
in the front row, because it seemed to be too damn noisy for them.
Are there any recordings of "The Young Philadelphia" out there in the
werstern and eastern hemisphere?

Those people of you who are interested in good and intelligent
hardcore-music, check out the Swedish hardcore-band "REFUSED". They have
a record called "The shape of punk to come", which is well worth
listening.
have good time... Shlomo Weintraub

T. S. Monk is Monk's son. I remember that his first project was kinda lame
funk-soul, but i understand he's doing more conventional jazz now.

Clipped from the _Vital Weekly_ newsletter:
GUY KLUCEVSEK - TRANSYLVANIAN SOFTWEAR (cd on Starkland)
Starkland - known to me for their Tod Dockstader and Paul Dreshter
releases - is not the label you expect to release the new
Klucevsek-cd. But they did. It takes some courage to do so, as this
is a solo cd by Klucevsek, which means listening to the accordion for
about one hour. Isn't that boring? Fortunately Klucevsek is a very
capable player and composer and delivers an excellent cd with
'Transylvanian Softwear'. Klucevsek is known for his many
cooperarions with musicians from downtown New York: John Zorn, David
Garland, Elliot Sharp, etc. He is one of those few artists that
succeeded to give the accordion a new life in the new music scene.
But Klucevsek never forgets his roots lay somewhere in Eastern
Europe. References to polka music and other world music are obvious
on many of his output. This makes his 'new music' very listenable and
accessible. This is also the case with 'Transylvanian Softwear'. Most
compositions are from Klucevsek himself, others are from John Zorn,
=46red Frith, William Duckworth. Most compositions are known from
earlier cds, but presented here for the first time in a solo-version.
So this one is for fans only I guess (DM).

From http://pretentious.net/Muslimgauze/memorials.htm :
On December 30, 1998 Bryn Jones (Muslimgauze) was rushed to hospital,
in Manchester, with an unknown illness. It turned out that he had a
rare fungal infection in his blood stream. This infection seriously
depleted his immune system and as is so often the case he developed a
severe case of pneumonia. Ultimately his body could not withstand the
onslaught and on January 14 @ 22:50 GMT Bryn Jones passed away.

I heard the NPR report which was actually somewhat slight. If you know
anything about the man and band then you'd know the story. The only news to
me was that apparently Van Vleit has been suffering from multiple sclorosis
or some such disease for the past several years, hence his low profile.
Also for all you completists out there, there is a new comic book (I don't
have it nearby so I don't have a title) by the writer Harvey Pekar (American
Splendor and many jazz reviews). One of the stories is about our man JZ.
Also mentions Bruce Gallenter (sp?) (DMG).

Hmmm...hearing of the juxtaposition of the Zorns music

kind of weird to watch your sister strip at a club?

Anyone know what, if anything, is the status of this band nowadays?
Given the scattershot quality and dubious provenance of many of their
past releases, might there be anything else around of the quality of
'Live Paris-Ziguinchor', 'Casamance au Clair de Lune' or 'Amadou-Tilo'?
I know there's a ton of crap avbailable including misleading issues of
old material packaged as new and the last couple of things by the band,
like 'Toubab-Bi', were disappointingly slick. But they once seemed
capable of great things.

Rabih Abou Khalil Yara Enja
A soundtrack to a movie of the same name, this recording is much darker,
less jazzy than last year's fine 'Odd Times'. Here, the instruments
backing Khalil's oud are violin, cello and frame drum and the pieces are
more impressionistic, less improvisatory but still, generally quite
beautiful. To my limited knowledge, Kahlil's work has stayed "confined"
to his own vision, ie, I haven't heard of him working on equal footing
or as a sideman with others, something I'd be very interested to hear as
his own playing is rich and imaginative while being tradition-soaked.
Derek Bailey Fairly Early w/ Postscripts Emanem
This had been discussed here a bit already, so I'll only add that, while
this doesn't, imho, rank up with the very best solo Bailey ('Guitar
Solos Vol. 2' & 'Takes Fakes...'), it's well worth knowing to get a
firmer picture of Bailey's methodology and his conversational approach
to improvising.
Caspar Brotzmann Mute Massaker Rough Trade
If this had been CB's first release instead of his fifth (?), it might
have been a promising start. But after his last album as leader, the
tremendous 'Home', this can only be seen as a step backwards towards
wider acceptability. He all but explicitly imitates Hendrix (one cut,
'Indians' sounds remarkably akin to 'Tax Free' from the 'Live at
Winterland' lp), tones down his angst (though I suppose one should be
thankful for the lack of overwrought vocalizing) and basically produces
a rambling record that Deadheads might not be too troubled by.
Disappointing.
Morton Feldman Coptic Light Argo
For John Cage hat [now] art
The Argo release, performed by the New World Symphony conducted by
Michael Tilson Thomas, includes two other works, 'Piano and Orchestra'
and 'Cello and Orchestra' which don't quite hit the spot for me, but
'Coptic Light' is a wonderful piece, an 'orchestra as breathing organ'
work somewhat similar to 'For Samuel Beckett' in that sense. 'For John
Cage' for violin and piano, is a superb late work, typical in that it
feels like it could go on forever, always discovering new, gorgeous
patterns. Highly recommended.
Barry Guy/LJCO Double Trouble Intakt
Portraits Intakt
Neither of these are new releases (1989 and 1993) and those who know Guy
and the LJCO probably already own them, so I'll simply reiterate my
growing conviction that Guy and this band are producing the finest large
scale jazz-based music this decade. From Guy's fascinating structural
approach (clearly evident in 'Portraits') to his powerful use of
anthemic, African-derived melodies to the incredible range of
ultra-imaginative soloists, this ensemble has all bases covered and then
some. Buy these discs.
Mauricio Kagel 1898/Music for Renaissance Instruments DG
My first in-depth experience with Kagel, I'm not quite as taken by this
as others have been. The instrumental colors are often fascinating and
beguiling (including a wonderful, unique use of children's chorus on
'1898'), but his compositional approach here seems to me too routinely
shifting from ppp to fff and back, over and over, as if it was the only
way to infuse drama into the process and I'm left with too much of just
an explication of sonorities Kagel finds interesting. He seems to be a
bit fence-straddling between going whole-hog into the pure sounds and
wanting to retain a semi-traditional approach. I'm still interested in
hearing more, though, and will probably pick up 'Exotica' at some point.
Supersilent 4 Rune Grammophone
Pretty good effort by this Scandanavian (Norwegian?) quartet
(?...there's no info provided with the disc) that draws on aspects of
noise improv, drum 'n' bass (I understand all rhythms are in fact
performed live by the band), free jazz improv and a little bit o' prog
rock perhaps. When they get cooking, as on the second track here (tracks
are simply called 4.1 through 4.7) they can really take off. Other
times, they get a little noodly in that omnipresent Miles circa 1970
vein. Worth hearing, though.
Also got the two Oxley reissues, 'The Baptised Traveller' and 'Four
Compositions' (thanks Stefan!), wonderful Brit improv from 1969-70 with
a group including Bailey, Parker and Wheeler. Fine stuff.

Hey all -
Just wanted to send the word out that Cecil and Elvin are playing duets
Tuesday, September 7 through Thursday, September 9 at the Blue Note in
New York City. Elvin's celebrating his 72nd birthday with his regular
working band for the 9:30 set each night, but the second set each night,
at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Elvin's playing duets with CT. I
figure I'll try to attend on Tuesday or Wednesday night. But for those
who can't be here, the Blue Note does live webcasts on Thursday nights
at http://www.bluenote.net - I've never checked this out so I don't know
if it's audio-only or audio and video. But that's my heads up for

I must admit that I found it hard to be very sad about this news when I
heard it. Having researched the guy a fair bit (all you have to do is
have a look at some of the interviews and quotes on the
http://pretentious.net/Muslimgauze/ site) there's no doubt to me that he
was virulently anti-semitic, and not just pro-Palestine. His reaction to
the beginnings of the peace process was to put out a CD called
"Betrayal" with a picture of the handshake on the cover...
I wondered at the time whether perhaps it had been a Zionist virus that
had had enough of the bastard.
I must also admit that I don't like his music, but that is of course a
different matter.

Well it's not a mis-conception as such... I know that Arabs are
"semitic" as well, but generally in English-speaking culture,
"anti-seimitic" means anti-Jewish. But re-write it as anti-Jewish if you
like, it still stands.
> out of curiosity, if your only legacy was

> Peter Hollo?
Well, not everything about me, but if I said something along the lines
of "I wouldn't ever even talk to a black person, they're hateful people"
then I think people could be pretty confident about certain aspects of
me. This is hypothetical - I don't hold such views (far from it!) and
would never express something like that, but Bryn Jones has.
You have to understand that I never wished him dead, and wasn't
_actually_ glad that he had died or anything. But I found it hard to
mourn his death or feel anything about it, considering how bigoted he
was. I mean it wasn't just a handful of magazine articles/interviews, it
was his whole body of work, in its political aspect...
Of course when I'm interviewed by magazines or whatever in my various
musical endeavours, I'm always scared they'll misquote me or bend what I
say. The one time I've had a philosophy article published (in a
university magazine) the quotes they chose implied something very
different to the conclusions I'd made.
But here's a quote:
Eskhatos: Do you have complete animosity toward the state of Israel and
its people or would you exempt certain Israelis that you might consider
good people?
Muslimgauze: No, I wouldn't. No, I wouldn't talk to any of them, the
whole people are disgusting so no, I wouldn't. Just look at the record
of what they've done, it's incredible. So I would not tolerate anything
to do with Israel. I mean, its my opinion, a Manchester musician's point
of view. I know other people will probably say I'm wrong and they won't
support me but it's just what influences my music.
Okay, I'll accept that it's not necessarily a statement of general
anti-Jewishness... But it's pretty close, and pretty closed-minded
wouldn't you say?
Enough. I won't say any more, as it's not really on topic.
Peter.

Subject: More on-topic: Pekar comic on Zorn.
Date: 07 Sep 1999 20:14:27 +1000
Someone mentioned the Harvey Pekar comic from the latest American
Splendor that just came out, called Masada. (In the issue called
"Terminal" if you're interested).
Pekar's an interesting chap. Has written jazz criticism for many years
apparently, and writes the irregular alternative comic "American
Splendor", usually autobiographical, with art by various people,
including very often Robert Crumb, and Joe Sacco. The latter wrote the
fairly well-known comic "Palestine", which dealt pretty swiftly with the
Jewish side in less than one book, and then concentrated on Palestine in
the next three. I find it distressingly one-sided, but anyway, still an
important work.
Pekar's an opinionated guy. As an example of Pekar's temperament, he
hates and loathes Art Spiegelman, and and never misses an opportunity to
rate everything (including "Palestine") higher than "Maus".
(Interestingly, he's Jewish...)
Anyway, the comic in question has some interesting anecdotes about Zorn,
who Pekar has met and conversed with. Amusingly he credits the 10 Masada
CDs (doesn't mention the live ones) to Tzadik rather than DIW, but
that's a small error really.

I've just entered some new worlds - minidisc and CDR - and wondered

Is it quite easy/quite difficult to format a normal blank CDR on a

(b) anyone have an opinion about the relative quality of different

I remember reading an essay on Zorn by Pekar around the time of John Zorn's
40th Birthday. The jist of the essay, from what I remember, said that Zorn
was turning 40 and that he has done more for furthering jazz than anyone
else of his generation. I wish I had the essay with me to reproduce for

This is for any Dave Lombardo fans. Mr.Lombardo is on a new classical
recording with Lorenzo Arruga titled 'Vivaldi: The Meeting.' I have not
yet heard it, but apparently it was inspired by an 18th century
improvisational contest between Vivaldi and Handel. A Cuban
percussionist aided Vivaldi then; now another Cuban/American
percussionist (Dave Lombardo) will give this historic event a 20th
century Lombardian interpretation that should be quite interesting if
not mind-blowing. Check it out! (Is Lombardian correct?)

Adding to the Zorn content of the thread, Harvey was also responsible for
Avant's release of early Joe Maneri material, 'Paniots Nine.' I can still
remember the day he called me up at the office with extreme excitement and
insisted on playing some of this stuff for me over the phone before he'd
managed to help it find a home. He also wrote the liner notes.
Harvey's a unique and remarkable man and I'm glad to know him. 'American
Splendor' is always great reading. And I think he's convinced Revenant to
release some more archival Maneri (alluded to at the end of the liner notes
to 'Paniots Nine') once they recoup expenses from their lavish Beefheart
box.

Well, yes and no. On a less-serious scale, it would be sort of like saying
that, by disliking Zorn, one disliked the entire "downtown scene", at least
in the sense that a significant part of what many people consider to be a
big part of the larger whole was being rejected. You'll notice, though,
that "Zorn" and "downtown" aren't equal halves of a one-for-one
substitution, and the same has to be said for "Israel" and "Jewishness".
Similarly, I think it's worth pointing out that Jones objected to the
existence of Israel as being an internationally-permitted violation of
living-memory territory rights; citizens of such a country, then, are both
participating in and (perhaps silently) condoning the forcible eviction of
one group of people from what they knew/know as their home in favour of
another group. Whether or not you buy that argument, I suppose, depends on
how far back you're willing to go into history before you feel that claims
on a particular tract of land become unreasonable... or maybe on whether or
not you feel that people should simply be made to shut up and play nice.
For what it's worth, though, I don't think that the whole Jones thing
*is* entirely off-topic for this list: politically, the focus of his music
wasn't all that different from something like "Kristallnacht", non? (I'm
also tempted to raise the issue of just how "radical" the notion of
"Radical Jewish Culture" among New York musicians is likely to be, but can
see that becoming a really ugly exercise in playground badass bravado --
"My favourite musician is edgier than yours!" -- before very long, so maybe
it would be best to wrangle with that one off-list. Still, something like
_Yo! I Killed Your God_ strikes me as being a combination of some really
flimsy showmanship, a heaping helping of too-easy controversy, and some
pretty damned impressive playing that doesn't get nearly enough attention
as a result of the first two elements.)

Yeah, thankfully the Bible Launcher CD was deleted. I thought I was so lucky
when I found it in a Tower in Shinjuku, but the only redeeming quality of this
CD is that it is so hard to find. I think the reason it was deleted has to do
with legal issues related to sampling, but IMHO this is really a favor Tzadik
has done us all. As for what it sounds like: bad early 90's metal with samples
of crazy preachers and porn flicks. Every track sounds the same, and the joke
gets really old after about 30 seconds.
Now, anyone wants to trade my copy with a CBS version of "Cynical Hysterie
Hour"?

The Coptic Light release on CPO pairs it with Durations 1-5 instead of the
two orchestra/solo pieces. I heard the CPO release of all four orchestra
pieces (the others were violin and flute), and was surprised at how little
they did for me, considering I'm becoming a pretty big Feldman fan. Coptic
Light however is truly wonderful, and I'd recommend the CPO release as well.

Though I know all of their discs well, I've never paid attention to the tune

Here's the story on Bible Launcher, as I understand it from Bruce Gallanter: The
disc was recorded by 99Hooker and I believe two other folks (who I don't recall)
and uses a lot of samples. A whole lot, at length, without permission. Zorn was
apparently concerned about licensing and appropriation and after it was released
gave them back the masters and full rights so that they could release it
elsewhere if someone else wanted to take the risk.
I have it and I do like it OK, although it wears a little thin. It's fairly
noisy and some of the vocal segments are quite offensive (not that I really mind
noise and offensiveness, but just for the record...). It's interesting enough if
you see it cheap, but I wouldn't go for some overpriced "out of print copy" (as
at least one NYC store is wont to do).
On this disc, 99Hooker sounds a lot like Zorn to me. Like a whole lot (although
I think he plays tenor). Any other impressions of him out there? I don't know
other things he's done or even very much about him.

"pre-echo" you mention sounds like print-through. I'm
not an expert, but when a reel of tape gets wound it
is obviously resting against other parts of itself,
and if the tape was wound too tightly and/or had high
recording levels it can transfer the signal slightly
because it is magnetic after all. That's my best
guess. Can't really think of any other way that would
happen.

Everything is so relative. I myself thought _As Is_ was brilliant, and that
_Square Root_, though somewhat less inspired, is a terrific illbient
soundsculpturing erratic-beated piece of work. Then again, many fans of
their first CD have let me know they consider _Square Root_ to be a major
letdown.
An interesting fact I learned from one of the members of We is that, while
they only had roughly a couple of weeks to put together _As Is_, sleeping
in the studio, etc., they were allowed the luxury of many, many months time
to prepare _Square Root_. Perhaps _too_ much luxury....?

Since apparently every album ever made is known to at least one Zorn List
member, is the following from the Wayside catalog worthwhile:
ANAL MAGIC & REVEREND DWIGHT FRIZZELL-Beyond The Black Crack (UK) $15.00
This reissues a very rare & very weird home-made album, originally
released in '76. "[This was] the concept of Rev. Dwight Frizzell, a
musician, film maker, Doctor Of Metaphysics &
minister in the Universal Church Of Life. It remains...one of the most
unique listening experiences in
modern experimental music. Recorded between 1974-76...[it] is a dark,
dizzying & exhilarating journey through free jazz, electronics &
environmental sound, all shattered by Frizzell's radical tape editing."
Includes a good chunk of bonus material too.

yup, this is one of the three superb and obscure reissues put out in the last
year by Clive Graham's Paradigm label, the other two being Brast Burn and
Karuna Khyal. all three were primarily known for years for being part of the
infamous Nurse With Wound list, included by Steven Stapleton on the first NWW
record, Chance Meeting On A Dissecting Table Of A Sewing Machine And An
Umbrella (1979).
the list consists of nearly 300 artists, some well known (AMM, Can, Yoko
Ono), and some stunningly obscure (Food Brain, Min Bul, Tamia). the
accompanying text merely says "Categories strain, crack and sometimes break,
under their burden--step out of the space provided...". it's a pretty
remarkable list, especially given that it was compiled twenty years ago. the
complete list of bands is here:

Has anyone else heard this (recent Ruins side project on Tzadik)? I'm
listening to this for the first time, and its pretty unbelievable. Not as
prog as the Ruins, a lot more improv oriented (within song
structures), totally manic and relentless. This guitarist (Kido Natsuki)
is prety great, he uses a clean tone and has sort of a stabbing style and
is all over the place. I guess this might drive some people crazy in
terms of how frantic and spastic it is, but it's worth looking into, I
think, even if (like me) you're not a Ruins fanatic.

Yes! I've heard it - actually I bought it about 2 weeks ago and haven't
been able to take it out of my stereo. This album is definitely the best
thing Tzadik has released this year (along with the Dion McGregor CD), and
it is going on my early short list for best album of the year. Yeah, I
really think it's that good. A lot of hype has been tossed up about the
guitarst in this group, but to be honest, all three members are immensely
talented musicians (Yoshida Tatsuya: drums, Nasuno Mitsuru: bass, Kido
Natsuki: guitar)
I must admit, I thouroughly enjoy anything associated with Yoshida and Ruins
is me favorite band, but this album is excellent even if that wasn't the
case. There's 12 tracks, three of them are short complete improvs (a little
over a minute each) and the other 9 are full-scale rock songs written solely
by Yoshida. It's still prog-ish, but certianly not as "out there" as Ruins
is. There's still planty of those quick time changes that Yoshida loves so
much, and the addition of a third instrument for this band helps the times
changes stand out even more than they do with Ruins. The song "Out Of Head"
is worth the price alone.
I certianly hope Yoshida makes this group a full-time working band and not
just another side project. This band has loads of potential.

you asked us personal opinions. so, here's my opinion.
we(tm)'s new album is really great! it's a masterpiece of electronic
dance music. (mix of down tempo, drum'n'bass, strange soundscape, with
sound tools donned by various folks incl. eyvind kang.. like the first
album. but you wouldn't recognize him significantly. it's not a
easy-lazy sampling tends to be found in many other electronic pieces by
some other musicians.)
but... i'm not sure what sort of music is your preference. since you're
here, you're more leaning towards experimental jazz or noise?!?
or if you like electronic music but more agressive digital hardcore
stuff? or minimal techno???? (mmm.... well, maybe since you said 'the
new "we" album', you liked their first: as is?!? & you want the opinions
on the new one, compared with the first? - then, let me know. i'll try
to write my personal comparison of the two.)
i "personally" like their music a lot since their approach to exhibit
their highly original sound is very 'un'obvious ('un'show-off;). it's
very sneaky. you can just relax & enjoy, or hop & dance without
realizing the superb work. (& it's just fine to be like that.)
however if you prefer, you can listen to them more carefully... so all
the textures will sink into you fairly deep. it's a pure pleasure.
highly recommended. - pt

I got We's first album shortly after it came out and considered it (as a
fairly discerning listener to/DJ of experimental electronica) a minor
masterpiece - great studio trickery, good programming, really
interesting sounds.
The second album, on the first few listens, was indeed a MAJOR
disappointment. I have grown to like it more, but I still find the drum
programming on the whole quite stilted, somehow never quite getting
flowing and funky enough (not funky as in "like funk music" but just as
in rhythmically exciting), and the sounds are lovely but too much like
moer of same from the first album. Not that that's a bad thing, but it
could somehow be more _different_ of the same... (?)
I would recommend that anyone interested in the group get "As Is" first,
and then go for "The Square Root of Negative One".
Also notable are their remixes of Tipsy, on two different 12"s, the
names of which I can't remember right now...
Peter.

hello everybody,
i took down the previous mp3's and put up a track from a recent joey baron
trio performance for your listening pleasure. the name of the page has
been changed from 'weekly' to 'sporadically updated', too ;). unless this
sort of post offends the readers of the zorn list, i'll keep posting
notices whenever i update.
also, does anyone know if there are any plans to record a studio album of
the joey baron/ribot/medeski trio? or a live album for that matter? they
really are impressive...

There's been a change to the Masada show:
John Zorn's Masada will be playing at Tonic on Thursday, September 30 at
9:00pm and 10:30pm. Tickets are $20 per set. Zorn will also be playing at
midnight with Andy Haas and Fly.
Something else that may be of interest to this list is a Jack Smith Memorial
Tribute at Tonic on Friday 9/17 at 9:00pm. The evening will be presented by
John Zorn and will include musical exotica from his Smith's record
collection spun by Zorn himself.

More (thanks to Kenichi Nagatomo) about the upcoming Arto Lindsay record:
*** - PRIZE: Arto Lindsay
Arto Lindsay; Peter Scherer; Vinicius Cantuaria; etc.
1999 - Avex Trax (Japan), AVCD-11744 (CD)
1999 - Righteous Babe (USA), ??? (CD)
Note: Japan pressing not released yet (planned for October 6, 1999).
Note: US pressing not released yet (planned for October 19, 1999).
As you can see, the Japanese Arto is a second pressing of PRIZE, and not a

OK, initially somebody told me about an upcoming Arto Lindsay record on a
Japanese label, without any mention of the title. I wrongly assumed that it was
a different record than PRIZE. But today the same person told me that the title
of this record was also PRIZE (and I exclude the possibility of a pure coinci-
dence).
There is of course the possibility that they slightly differ (modulo a bonus
or mistery track), but what I wanted to say was that it was the same record
with two pressings.

Marc is not French, although he might have some French roots.

In case you need to read another rave review of this record,

There's still a 60-second MP3 soundbite from the disc there as
well, but it won't be there for long. A truly great mix of old-fashioned
fusion and contemporary electro sensibilities, with genuine free
jazz energy.
> Was Spillane re-released through Tzadik lately?
I believe so, but not with the original programme (I say this without
anything to substantiate it, so someone else had better jump in
here).
> Which label did originally release Spillane?
Electra/Nonesuch. Until recently, at least, it was still available in
high street UK shops, but maybe that's just back-stock.
> Opinions on it?
The Nonesuch issue contains the following pieces:
Spillane: an episodic stylistic mix; if you like the early Filmworks
albums, or the Naked City stuff, you'll love it.
Two-Lane Highway: piece composed by Zorn for one of his heroes,
Albert Collins. Must have been a real challenge to create
something, as he says, which Collins was comfortable improvising
within, but which wasn't just straight blues. Very bluesy, quite
unpredictable stuff, unlike anything else JZ has done.
Forbidden Fruit: the "difficult" one, for string quartet and turntables.
Good and spikey.
The Nonesuch release is widely regarded as one of Zorn's most
accessible and most essential releases. Without knowing what
Tzadik have done to it it's hard to say whether they've improved it or
not. Certainly "Forbidden fruit" sits oddly in this company, and
while it's a nice piece it might have been an idea to replace it with
something more in keeping with the overall tone of the record.

Not just that, but for those who don't follow classical music circles, Steve,
Jennifer and Erik are NOT the Ahn Trio - that's a trio of sisters (also violin,
cello and piano) who presumably are playing the Paul Schoenfield portion of the

wondering which albums are the personal favourites of fellow z-list

As a longtime Ellington fan, with about 100 DE cds, I still list the infamous
Fargo, ND concert from 1940 as THE best. I have the now out of print VJC 2cd
version. Of course if you really want to dive in, go for the 24 cd RCA box.
Now that's a desert island set if there ever was one. The notes alone are
priceless, not to mention some of this century's greatest music. Another
personal favorite of mine is Such Sweet Thunder, which was recently
re-released by Sony with about twice the music as the original.
specifically does anyone have any opinions on the Great Paris Concert 2cd?
I think it's a good mix of warhorses from the DE songbook, standards, a couple
of suites, and lots of extra added material. Well worth the price, and well
recorded. Plus a fine edition of the DE orchestra.

Besides the obvious "Blanton-Webster Years" and "Black, Brown and Beige"
sets on RCA, some of my favorite Ellington is the really early stuff.
"Early Ellington: Complete Brunswick Recordings " (a 3CD box set on GRP) is
excellent and relatively easy to find. If you can find them, "The Original
Edward 'Duke' Ellington Hits" series on King Jazz are superb.
"Money Jungle" on Blue Note crackles with electricity. I hear that there
were a lot of sparks flying between Ellington and Mingus in the recording
studio too.
At the other end of his career, Ellington wrote several Sacred Music
Concerts. Here in Seattle, we have a repertory orchestra that puts on an
annual show of these concerts just before Christmas. I have a couple of
tapes of these performances which are also some of my favorite Ellington
recordings.

I can swear by the FAR EAST SUITE, which was reissued several years ago with
fine sound. It's a monster, and the band is out of sight. In one longish
tune featuring cadenzas from Duke on piano, he manages in the course of one
solo cadenza to sound like Keith Jarrett _and_ Cecil Taylor. Thoroughly
remarkable, and essential listening. You could, I suppose graduate from
this to cecil taylor's WINGED SERPENTS, which is beautiful nuts.
I love MONEY JUNGLE, from the the same period. It's a pretty dark trio
session with Duke on piano, Max Roach on drums, and Charles Mingus on bass.
Pantheon lineups can falter, but this record clicks for me. Their version
of "caravan" is cruel and dark, and the two takes of "solitude" bear no
resemblance to one another. Mingus is out of control, like Scott LaFaro on
angel dust, at times.
Duke first "comeback" performance is caught on record, live, on ELLINGTON AT
NEWPORT (1955?), which is probably one of the few ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL Duke
records to buy. Own it! It swings so hard. Ellington was once asked how
he felt about the avant-garde, or soe such thing, and he responded, "For the
avant-garde, I have Paul Gonsalves." Check out the immortal herculean tenor
solo in "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue".
Finally, for early Duke, the 3-CD BLANTON-WEBSTER band is universally
recognized as the shit, and worth the investment. Problem: I don't feel
that way. I've listened to the thing twice and can't really dig it. But so
many swear by it, perhaps you should look into it....
Duke was a heavy musical thinker, no doubt.

Kayser's right about SUCH SWEET THUNDER, which he didn't mention was written

The reissue is gorgeous and sounds pretty damn good. Wonderful music, and

one that I love that rarely gets mentioned is the New Orleans Suite, from the
tail end of his career, 1971. outside of that, I'd also suggest the prime
stuff from around 1940, the 3 CD Blanton/Webster, and the 2 CD Fargo sets.
the recent Columbia reissues are the first new Ellington discs I'd bought in
a long time, and they really did a nice job, espcially with Newport and Such
Sweet Thunder. and lastly, The Great Paris Concert's OK, but you should own
about 20 other Duke discs before you pick this up, unless it's really
super-cheap.

I'll add yet another vote for Blanton-Webster Years with one caveat. If the
cheap comp you have is the one I'm thinking of, it has a good number of the
best cuts from B-WY. If the sound quality of the circa 1940-1942 cuts on that
comp is problematic for you, you may find that sound quality is an obstacle
in digging B-WY. Other personal faves: "...And His Mother Called Him Bill"
from 1967. All compositions by the recently deceased Billy Strayhorn and a
fantastic set overall, with the tune "Bloodcount" and Hodges's solo on it
especially standing out to my ears as tour de force. The 1956 set at Newport
that someone mentioned is a very nice one that I go back to a lot. "The
Afro-Eurasian Eclipse" from 1971 - another late one with some heavy rhythmic
action. My enjoyment of this may partially be tied to it being the first Duke
I ever got, but as objectively as i can hear it it still sounds great. I also
enjoy the recently reissued "Black Brown and Beige" (Columbia single disc,
not the 3CD RCA/Bluebird set, although that has its moments as well) from
1958 because it features Mahalia Jackson who I have a big soft spot for. Very
weighty and gloomy. Heavy handed in the extreme and no less an album for that.
Hope your Duke hunt goes well.

I think the main reason people are slamming this album is that the idea is
good but not the execution. Derek is playing pretty well, but the beats are a
real let-down and past the suprise of the first couple minutes, there's
nothing more to hear. On the other hand, "Derek and Rhythms" on the Bingo
lable uses the same principles and is a much better, thanks to the greater
variety and quality of the collaborations.

Subject: Bob Ostertag/Aaly Trio w KVD at Tonic
Date: 20 Sep 1999 16:19:58 -0400
Back to back shows this past Saturday.
Ostertag's set was divided into a solo Mac piece and an improv trio
with Denman Maroney and Theo Bleckman. The solo set was suprisingly
thin and somewhat shallow, the sounds coaxed from the Mac (via
joystick and keyboards) seeming like a succession of effects, often
deliberately cartoonish, to no great effect. The trio was far more
successful, especially towards the beginning where a drone-like
atmosphere was developed and worked. Maroney, saddled with Tonic's
upright and thus unable to engage in his usual basin-hurling
nonetheless managed to make do creatively both manipulating the
stringboard and playing "normally". Bleckman (first time I've heard
him) has an enjoyable voice, generally employed non-histrionically,
but suffers a bit from a syndrome often seen in percussionists, ie, he
uses a number of techniques (one might, non-perjoratively, say
gimmicks), either with voice alone or augmented by implements, which
he cycles through, a minute or two at a time, rather than staying in
one "area" and developing it. Still, a pretty good set. Ostertag, at
least on this occasion, was far more intriguing in a group setting
than solo and showed a special affinity in accompanying Bleckman's
vocalizations.
Aaly/KVD pulled out most of the stops with the opening number and
rarely let up. Sprawling, urgent, heartfelt free (ish) jazz of a very
high order. Part of their success seems to derive from a kind of
conservative strategy (in this context): 1) they hold down the length
of their solos (that is to five or six minutes, unlike less inspired
players who tend to go on three times as long) and 2) they generally
either bracket their pieces with or move towards tight little kernals
of thematic material, often riff-based. Part of me recoils a wee bit
at this relative crowd-pleasing approach but, hell, they pull it off
at such a high, strong level that I'm reluctant to carp much. Both
saxists were in fine form and really play well off one another,
Gustafsson tending towards the manic, Vandermark a little more
restrained and considered. This show was part of the annoying CMJ fest
and the full house was presumably in part due to that fact, but the
crowd loved it and brought the band back for an encore: a haunting,
lovely KVD tribute to Harry Carney. Fine stuff (only disappointed that
the regular bassist--Persson?--didn't make the gig; love his work on
disc).

I forgot one of my faves on my earlier post on this thread. "Piano Duets:

piano duets all through the CD with unobtrusive accompaniment. Sound

In late August, Downtown music Gallery sent me a pamphlet listing the entire

here's what the list said:

Gerry Hemmingway (yes!)
RADICAL JEWISH CULTURE

Unfortunately, no release dates were listed, but at least we know what
they're planning on releasing! =)

Uri's new cd will be released on Winter and Winter. It is out in Europe. It
was recorded live at Tolbach. It's under the artist title of Mahler, Live at
Toblach. The release date for the states is not set, but it will be out this
fall. It is obviously not the same as Primal Light.

First of all, you're very lucky to find on a used store such a CD like
"Quartet" (Nonesuch); it's not easy for me to say which is the best Frisell,
but this one is amazing. Lineup also includes Ron Miles on trumpet and
Curtis Fowlkes on trombone: you don't really miss any percussion at all with
those guys!
Nevertheless, if "Quartet" is your first Frisell, I would recommend to be
pretty patient because it's a recording that tastes better after continuous
listenings (al least that was my personal experience), but naturally it's
worth the price.
Go get it now. Highly recommended.

Do you mean the Prelapse portion of the Music for Children CD from last
year, or the new self titled Prelapse CD (that comes out today, I guess)
on Avant. The s/t album is made up of both songs written by Zorn (half in
number, only about 1/4 of the disc in length as most are really short)
with the rest being Prelapse originals. I had a chance to review the copy
at our radio station and listened to it a whole lot; actually, I like the
Prelapse songs better than Zorn's, for the most part, b/c I feel like I've
heard almost all of Zorn's 'tricks' in writing this kind of music. I've
listened too the first Naked City, Radio, and Torture Garden way too much
to be very surprised I think.
I was proud of myself b/c I put the player on shuffle the first time I
listened to the disc, and was able to guess who wrote the songs (Zorn or
Prelapse) like 21 out of 23 times. The Prelapse songs have more heavy
riffs, and do not have quite as many abrupt changes (and they do them
diferently - Zorn's moves are kind of trademarked anyhow). But I feel
sorry for the sax player, b/c he sounds almost exactly like Zorn and may
not ever be able to recover!

Have you heard the new CD of theirs on Wobbly Rail? 'Crowd pleasing'
isn't the first thing to come to mind on that! But I wasn't at that show
you're talking about. Anyway, I would guess that that tendency comes from
Vandermark, but thankfully it is much less pronounced in this group than
the Vandermark 5 (who I still pretty much like, but think are often too
restricted by the written parts which can sound forced at times).
The new AALY/KVD CD is a lot wilder than the first, much more
abrasive...actually it's the kind of thing I enjoy more live but I've
gotten to like this one a lot. Very good sound for a live recording,
undecorated but still very punchy and upfront.

The Uri Caine disc(s) (for it is a double) are in fact similar but in no
wise exactly the same (as far as the set list is concerned) to the studio
album, _Urlicht_. Over 2 discs, each nearing 60 minutes, he and the
ensemble (a slightly smaller cast than on the studio album, with many
returnees - about eight men on stage, I believe) really stretch out and
allow themselves to elevate this music to new heights. DJ Olive is even
given two short solo spots.

Indeed.

Yes, I believe it is. I received my copy as a promo, but without being
given any info about release dates, was led to believe that it was meant to
be on the market in Europe immediately. I just dropped a message to the
Swedish distributor, we=B4ll see if he can answer the availability question.

Indeed. Though asides from Olive=B4s stuff, everything is based on cuts on
the studio album; which does not mean that everything on the studio album
is included in the show.
And finally: It=B4s just brilliant. Better, better by far than the excellent
studio version. And in snazzier packaging to boot. All the best, Stephen

Hey, thanks for the "review!" I'm particularly pleased you could tell the
difference between our originals and Zorn's pieces. I wrote some of my tunes
as tributes to Zorn, and some were of course written purely for myself, and
I think there's a marked difference in each composer's style. The long time
list members probably know this CD has been kind of a log time coming, but
it's finally out and we're all dang proud of it.
We're doing our best to put together some kind of tour and some local shows,
but I'm afraid that our shows are a bit rare. We all have a lot of other

Brass City Records in Waterbury- Good avant section, knowledgable

employ some of the best Luthiers in the country
Cutlers New Haven- Better than average record store in the heart of Yale Univ.
Sam Ash music in New Haven, good on price, and selection, but not much else
The Buttonwood tree Middletown Ct Performance
space/gallery/coffeehouse, a good place to meet other musicians
WPKN _FM 89.5 Bridgeport possibly the best radio station on the

Hope this helps smooth the move to CT

Marsalis' Jazz Set. It also includes an interview in which UCaine

I read John Cage's I-VI. The book is okay, but if you
have Silence or any of the others you probably don't
need that. The best part was actually the Q&A that
ran beneath the text that was transcribed from a Q&A
session that Cage had with some students before a
performance of the piece.
God bless Cleveland Public Library, because that's
where I found the copy that I read.
As for the sax player in Prelapse sounds a lot like
Zorn, I remember seeing that he was a "special guest".
So, maybe there's a REASON he sounds a lot like Zorn.

Talking to Dominic Duval recently, he told me during his membership

I assume anyone who likes the CT Iridiums on CJR will like these as well.

I-VI is probably the Cage book I take off the shelf and wander through
most, though it's far from his most informative. The Q&A is quite good,
as are the audio materials. I'll probably get the Special Edition, but
then, I'm a fetishist :-)

Subject: waits at the beacon
Date: 24 Sep 1999 12:34:05 -0800
The beacon is the perfect setting for waits. What a real great old theatre!
From any seat you have a perfect view of the stage, and rightly so, waits
puts on quite a show indeed. Having never seen waits play live, I had no
idea what I was in store for. He is not only a class act musician /
songwriter but a flexible performer. The way he wiggles and struts around
up there on his plywood platform is reminicent of old film clips I have
seen of neal cassady dancing around. He'll throw his body around while
belting out the most ragged anthem, like his limbs were made of rubber.
Waits came up on stage from the crowd, beat hat pushed down, tossing
glitter from his pocket, wailing out a dusty megaphone, then got on his
platform, which was also very very dusty, and started kicking around doing
a major stomp, his voice was real ragged at first and then got better as
the show progressed, dont know wether that was intentional. During the
eyeball kid he put on this hat with mirror flecks all over the outside. Two
tight blue spotlights aimed at his head, beams of blue light went
everywhere, like a human disco ball but with less beams of light. It was
really a spectacular effect, he did this as each player in his band took a
mini solo. The band was perfect, very unconventional, the guitar player
seemed rooted in ribot's style, which I guess is really intregal to waits'
sound. The keyboard player was not too prominent, the upright player was
very tasteful [and played a mean guitar on box spring hog] the drummer was
the highlight for me. He really pushed the envelope as so many drummers
have to with waits, all the players [besides the keys] really played to,
and above, the waitsian aestetic. I went in hoping for a lot of the old
material, to my surprise I was most impressed with his renditions of the
new mule var songs. He played all the big ones of that album, eyeball kid,
cold water, that box spring hog tune, hold on [which was beautiful] get
behind the mule, and whats he building in there [which I thought was chessy
on the album but great live!!!] Some songs off bone machine, jesus gonna be
here, colluseum, and red house, probably some more I am missing. Then they
brought out an upright piano and tom played with the bass player for a
bunch of songs, doing mostly old ones from swordfish and raindogs. Ones
that stand out are 40 aught 6, tango till they droped, jockey full of
burbon, and a bunch more that I seem to have lost track of. tom played two
encores and was real energized, making all these great apropo comments
introducing tunes and just general comments and mockery.

I have the tribute album to Richard Thompson, in which June Tabor performs
two songs, "Beat the Retreat" and "Genesis Hall". A strongly recommended
album (the link to this list would be that Thompson has made records with
Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser and John French)
June Tabor is a traditional British folk singer. She has performed songs
by Duke Ellington, so there is a jazz sensability there. Her voice has great
emotional qualities. I think she has about 17 albums under her own name.

Yes she is a folk singer who has ventured into other musics. In my opinion
she is a 'fine' singer within that discipline, though somewhat mannered.
Outside of it she has not an idea. Just because she has performed standards
and Ellington tunes does not mean she adds to them, let alone understands
them. A bit like Marsalis and Monk?

Well, hold onto your hat...it's Jim Black, along with Mark Feldman,
Ralph Alessi,
Dave Binney, Mike Formanek, DJ Olive, Aaron Bensousan, and of course
Uri. Uri has
used various combinations to play this music. Dave Douglas, Drew Gress,
Cornell
Rochester among others. He prefers a smaller group. The band gets to
really
stretch out on this longer version.

You're right, he is a 'special guest', but only on half of it, the ones he

Well, you're right about it being much different! The
disc is Otomo's take on Takeo Yamashita's music for
Japanese cartoons and TV-shows, so there are pop
tunes, swinging theme-songs, etc... I've only had the
chance to listen to it once or twice, but it's really
nothing like anything I've ever heard him do before.
It should really throw most Otomo fans at first.
Personally, I really like it, and I think it says a

Four recent purchases of extraordinary quality:
Muller/O'Rourke Weighting For 4 Ears
I know, it's been around for a while, but I just got to it. Brilliant,
imaginative duo improvs with O'Rourke in a relatively melodic mood and
Muller unafraid to develop "regular" rhythms. No ironic asides from
JO, just great communication and listening while developing rich,
powerful sonic landscapes.
Such The Issue at Hand Matchless
Such is John Tilbury, Eddie Prevost and shakuhachi master Yoshikazu
Iwamoto. With Iwamoto on board, the music takes on a decidedly
Japanese quality as his playing stays largely within the bounds of
traditional shakuhachi music. Tilbury continues in his gorgeous
post-Feldman style and the result is 150 minutes of expansive,
unhurried, subtle and beautiful, quietly improvised music. Highly
recommended. Thanks to Eric O., Jon and Tom for pointing me here.
VHF Extracts Erstwhile
Our own Jon Abbey gets his label off to a wonderful start with this
release! VHF is Simon Fell (bass), Graham Halliwell (alto, percussion)
and Simon Vincent (drums, tone generator). I'm guessing the seven
pieces are all free improv, though I wonder if Fell had his hands on
the tiller a bit. They tend towards the quiet side, with very rich and
dark undertones. For example, the first piece opens with heavily
plucked bass notes that reminded me a bit of early Malachi Favors and
the hushed, pensive mood of the remainder of the piece can stand
alongside some early AEC work in the 'People in Sorrow'
mode.(Incidentally, the disc is recorded finely enough that Fell's
deep bass playing had me momentarily concerned about my speakers.)
Very different from the other Fell I've heard (the three 'Compilation'
albums), though perhaps that has to do with the equivalency of the
other members' contributions; his previous bent towards serialist
absolutism is, happily, absent here. One of the best things I've heard
this year.
He Baoquan/Sun Wenyan Guzheng King (World Music Library)
I have to assume that there exists, somewhere, a non-excellent release
on this label, but I've yet to run across it. This release contains 15
solo performances (split between the two performers) on the guzheng,
kind of a Chinese antecedent to the koto, made up of traditional
repertoire, some dating from as far back as the seventh century.
Wonderful stuff. If you've enjoyed (and you should) Min Xiao-Fen's
pipa work on Zorn's music and labels, this is right up your alley.

bass/ bass clarinet]
Nebulae/Staub (1999) [version for bass

John Cage: Variations II (1961) [guitar/bass clarinet/live electronics]
Take three members of the Viennese experimental music ensemble Polwechsel;
add Chicago-based composer/performer Gene Coleman to the mix and the result
is
Plus-Minus. With one foot in new music and the other in improvisation, this
ensemble produces tense compositions of uncanny detail and precision. Their
New York debut concert at Galapagos will feature original works by Gene
Coleman, hailed by the Chicago Tribune as "intellectually rigorous and
bristlingly theatrical". Drawing inspiration from the philosophies of John
Cage (whose music is also represented in this program), his compositions
create extreme sonic landscapes that are at once delicate and aggressive,
playful and sharply focussed.

New Music on North Sixth will start off its second season at Galapagos on
Tuesday, September 28th with the New York debut of Plus-Minus. This rare
opportunity to hear key figures of the Chicago and Viennese avant-garde in
one of Williamsburg's most inspiring spaces is not to be missed!
Gene Coleman (based in Chicago) and the Viennese ensemble Polwechsel share a
considerable history. Their collaborations began in 1997 with concerts in
Chicago, followed by programs in Vienna. In August 1997, Coleman performed
in the premiere of Burkhard Stangl's opera "Der Venusmond", on the top of the
Empire State Building in New York City. In April 1998 the group played an
entire concert of Coleman's compositions at Vienna's Echoraum. Shortly
thereafter, the group embarked on a North American tour, playing this same
program at the Vancouver Jazz Festival, the Arts Club of Chicago, Roulette in
New York and Areo Space in Seattle. In October 1998, they also performed at

Burkhard Stangl studied cultural anthropolgy, musicology, classical guitar
and later electric guitar. He is the founder of the jazz ensemble TON.ART

Michael Moser studied cello at the Universities of Graz and Vienna. He has
made performances for live electronics and worked with Heiner Goebbels, Vinko
Globokar, Helmut Lachenmann, Tony Oxley, TON.ART and Klangforum Wien.
Werner Dafeldecker's projects have included Polwechsel and Shabotinski. He
has worked with Eugene Chadbourne, Radu Malfatti, Franz Kogelmann, Jim
O'Rourke, Elliot Sharp and Klangforum Wien. He founded the avant-garde label
Durian Records in 1995 and has released CDs for Hat Art, Random Acoustics,
Plagdich dich nicht and Extraplatte.
A composer, bass clarinetist and visual artist, Gene Coleman is artistic
director of the Chicago-based Ensemble Noamnesia and runs the monthly new

performed with many great improvisers, including Derek Bailey, Roscoe
Mitchell, Evan Parker, Radu Malfatti and William Winant. He has worked with
many new music ensembles in Europe and collaborated on projects with such
composers as Vinko Globokar and Helmut Lachenmann.

The label is London Hall. A couple of months back, I e-mailed the guy who runs
the (or, a) Feldman site that lists this--a four CD set--in its upcoming
releases section but he had no idea when it was coming out. Originally supposed
to be Fall, '98.

Subject: tom's birthday gig(?)
Date: 28 Sep 1999 10:53:14 -0500
This may have gone out already (I always feel so behind being on the digest --
maybe I oughta switch), but the big news of last night's nyc waits show was, as
speculated here, the waits/ribot/cohen trio. they were both brought up for some
of the many encores (I lost count, but the show was just under three hours) for
"The House Where Nobody Lives." Unfortunately a little feedback that seemed to
be coming from Greg's bass hampered his playing, and he was too quiet. But Greg
& Marc also joined the ensemble (which also included guest John Hammond on
guitar and harmonica) for Heartattack & Vine and 16 shells (full band treatment,
unlike Fri according to Jason's review). Anyway, pretty cool cameos for our fave
string players, especially since Elvis Costello and Keith Richard(s) were also
in attendance, but weren't called up. (Marc and Elvis were sitting next to each
other about 12 rows back during the show). Carol Kane, Willem Dafoe, Hal Wilner
and I believe it was David Sansborn were also all there, for all you stargazers.
I disagree a little with Jason's assessment of guitarist Smokey Hormel. While it
was weird to see him play Ribot's lines, especially with Ribot in the audience
(before he had taken the stage), Hormel was just playing the songs as everyone
knows him. At other times, he wasn't so "rooted in Ribot" and was fairly
diverse, doing the blues and percussive bits required and some nice jazz
voicings through Straight to the Top.
So many songs I couldn't begin (not going to many rock shows anymore, it's weird
to me how the music stops and everyone claps every three minutes instead of 10
or 15, or 40). But faves of mine made the list (Innocent When You Dream, I'll
Shoot the Moon, Cemetery Polka (solo piano), Tango Till They're Sore) as well as
a heavily restructured Gun Street Girl. Pony shone, where on the album I'd
barely noticed it. Also one new song, something about goldfish in the jail
house. From the titles Jason mentioned, it seemed there was a fair bit of
variety between nights (though few might actually know that, given the Beacon's
policy of only allowing you to buy 4 tix at a time, all must be same night and
same row -- hell with that!).
OK, I'll stop. Coupla questions though, while I'm off the topic. Does anyone
know of a cast recording of Black Rider or a cast or Waits recording of Alice?
And what do we know about Kathleen Brennan? I've long wondered.

Did anyone in the Chicago area attend the MCA concert this Sunday? It was
a double bill of the Sainkho Namtchylak (sp?) Trio preceded by The White
Hole. The White Hole is a new music piece composed by Dafeldecker and
Kurzmann, and it featured Kurzmann on computer processing, Sainkho
Namtchylak on voice, and Stangl, Coleman, Dafeldecker, Jeb Bishop?, and
Moser on guitars. I don't really know how to describe the piece -- it
sounded like the last two pieces on Stangl's "Recital" multiplied by 5
with Namtchylak adding soft, beautiful sounds every now and then. The
audience hated it. Many walked out, talked to their neighbors, and
laughed contemptuously.
I was very disappointed with Sainkho's set afterwards. It consisted of
her singing over hip-hop beats and traditional instruments. Nothing
incredibly exciting. I was reminded a little of Sola's "Blues in the
East," which is much more successful in mixing different styles.
Plus/Minus and Marilyn Crispell will be performing Oct. 1, I think at the
Hothouse. Also Tim Berne is giving a free show at the Cultural Center on
the 3rd.

According to the August 1999 Matchless Catalogue, which I got from
Eddie Prevost at the Guelph Jazz Festival last month, John Tilbury has
recorded a limited edition 4-CD box set of
the piano music of Morton Feldman 1950 - 1986, called Morton Feldman -
All Piano.
If this is what you're loking for it seemns to be on LondonHall do 13,
not hatNow.
A note at the bottom of the page says : "this four CD set is not likely
to be available until October 1999".
Oh, and Prevost played great that weekend, both solo and in a workshop with
four other percussionists.

I just got back from the Sainkho gig at the Knit and
agree with what you have to say here. It started off
with three duets with Ned Rothenberg, which were
great, but then continued with her band doing the new
age world pop stuff. I'm a pretty big Sainkho fan and
am really impressed with her determination to explore
new musical territory in the face of her native
tradition, but her pop projects are a little much for
me.
Still, I think she is an incredibly strong and
powerful human being and was pretty moved by just her
presence on stage.

I'm finishing my first listen to the newly released double CD of Dixon solo
pieces, Collection (Cadence Jazz Records). it's a budget package in every
way, minimal packaging, an obvious transfer from vinyl, complete with
numerous pops and clicks, and a single CD price for two CDs, although the CDs
total about 80 minutes. but a lot of the music contained inside is really
superb. there are some beautifully lyrical pieces, and there are also some
ones where it sounds like he's somehow getting electronic feedback from his
trumpet, although the minimal info included would lead you to believe that
it's just solo acoustic trumpet (there are a couple of tracks with additional
musicians, to prevent someone from a nitpicking response, but it's almost all
solo Bill).
I'd also like to recommend once again Vade Mecum II, and after that Vade
Mecum (both Soul Note). two long CDs recorded at the same sessions in 1993,
with a quartet of Dixon, Barry Guy, William Parker, and Tony Oxley. gorgeous
chamber jazz, roughly in the tradition of Giuffre/Swallow/Bley, and both in
my short list for essential improv records of the nineties.
there are supposed to be two duo CDs of Dixon and Oxley en route soon from
Soul Note, but I haven't heard an update in a while. anyone know specifics on
these? needless to say, I'm eagerly awaiting their arrival. also, has anyone
heard Dixon's Intents and Purposes, from the late sixties? is it a lost
essential classic, or just a good record?

The guy's following me.
The other day, I posted a query asking if Gregory Cohen on the latest Randy
Newman CD was THE Greg Cohen, which I was informed, "yes."
Then that same day I finally filled an old Tom Waits gap in my collection,
and there he was again.
And that same day I received a review copy of the new (mandolinist) Butch
Baldassari/John Carlini (guitarist) CD, "Reflections" (which I like very much
on first hearing--both of these guys are terrific players. Label is sound
art, www.soundartrecordings.com). I just put that CD on now, and there is
Greg Cohen again.
This is almost creepy.

Tomorrow you'll be telling us about that Woody Allen documentary film
you rented last night.

I was wondering the same thing. Good question.
