Violin: A great record with Feldman on it is Crispell's "Santuero" (sp?) on Leo, with Gerry Hemmingway and Hank Roberts. That's an all-time improvized favorite.
Also, dig Ray Nance's playing with Duke. He only plays violin on a handful of recordings, but it's killer. I challenge anyone to claim the original Black Brown & Beige was not light years ahead of 1942. It sounds ahead of the Lincoln Center guys today, that's for sure.
Check out the remastered Such Sweet Thunder and Anatomy of A Murder for some nice Nance solos too.
Cello: Picked up the new Ernst Reijseger last week, and it's beautiful as hell. There's a men's choir on it, as well as a percussionist. What a sunny day record, though it gets plenty serious too. Beautiful writing. The production? Stefan Winter does it again.
Cheers,
Dave
NP: One of my favorite records, even years later, "Liberation Music Orchestra."

This one just doesn't do anything for me (although it is interesting to
hear how some of the material is reused on Feldman's solo disc). I'd be
more than willing to trade it.
Speaking of the cello, can anyone recommend albums featuring Martin Schutz
(on electric cello)? I'm especially interested in the
Wittwer-Schutz-Studer album on Intakt (#32) and the Koch-Schutz-Studer

Big second. Everyone I've played this for loves it. Some of it gives
me chills.
I also really like the Billy Bang Quartet's "Spirits Gathering" on CIMP.
Any news on when the new Winter & Winter Douglas release hits the stores in the States? I heard August 10th as a date, but... On related note, anyone hear the new (only?) Broke Back disc (if thats been released?) I just recently got into Tortise and read a positive review / blurb of Broke Back.
One last question - come on, fess up... any big time Jazz Butcher fans out there? I scour used record bins looking for some of the older recordings on CD. Now I hear there is a new Pat Fish project Sumosonic. Any one anyone?
I just picked up an album by Patricia Barber called modern cool. Dave Douglas on trumpet. Quite a bit of diversity on this record. the guitar player, John McLean is very interesting. The music ranges from Annetta Peacock to pop to modern jazz. She plays the piano and sings. Does anyone know about her other work?

Not really. But I thought I'd mention that Patricia's new album, "Cafe Blue," was issued by Blue Note last week, as was a new major label version of "Modern Cool" (previously on an indie label - Premonition, it was called, perhaps?).

(watchin' the Yankees against the TX Rangers, and still unable to play the damn King Crimson download...)
i must admit not knowing anything either but i've got a catalogue from a
store in sydney (birdland) which gives me the impression that both "modern
cool" and "cafe blue" are reissues( remastered or something). it also says
that a new cd is due later this year.
