Subject: sorry more pro tools...
well since you last heard from me i was dealing with the latency issues
associated with pro tools on my pc.
i've since re-routed according to digidesign instructions and avoided the
latency problem while monitoring. now i have a whole new problem that i can't
for the life of me figure out. since everyone was such a big help with my
other problem i took it upon myself to take advantage of "the zorn-list
knowledge" yet again.
here's the new problem: i recorded drums on to two stereo tracks left and
right, but when i went to start overdubbing the guitar i came across this
phenomenon - once recorded the playback of the drum parts and the guitar part
do not sink up. i might understand this if the guitar part was late, but it's
early! it is about half a second to a second ahead of the drum track. and i
would just adjust it (in the edit window), but i think it drifts in and out
as opposed to just being out one specific degree throughout the piece.
here's what im working with:
gateway performance 1500 (brand new in september)
256 meg of RAM
pentuim 4 processor
soundblaster live soundcard
the pc's line in is used as the input from the mixing board
so do i need to upgrade my soundcard significantly or do i need even more RAM
installed?
please help and thanks in advance.

id highly recommend birth, i havent had the chance to catch
them live but all i have heard i really enjoyed. they're
very legit young musicians.
i also just had the pleasure of seeing rochester's (ny) own
jerseyband. really, really wild stuff. kind of reminded me
of naked city twisted with zorn's experiments in cartoon
music and their own influences from their interests in death
metal and math rock. their first disc doesnt do them much
justice as to what they're doing now but if you hear of
these guys in your area id highly recommend checking them
out. their website is www.jerseyband.com, oh yeah their
graduates of the eastman school of music program if that
doesnt tell you something already.
also does anybody live in the area of kingston university in
london? im possibly attending there next fall and would be
interested in hearing about the area from a natives point of
view.

Hi all:
I've never done this before, but I've got an item available for anyone
interested. It's the new CD by European avant-black metal supergroup
Arcturus, 'The Sham Mirrors' (Ad Astra CD 001/The End CD 026) featuring
current and former members of Ulver, Mayhem and Emperor. Not at all bad, but
not my specific cup of tea, either.
Like new, gently played twice. Paid $18.99 U.S. plus tax, selling for $12
U.S., postage paid... or absolutely free to anyone who can trade me an
original (not burned) copy of the third Candiria CD, 'The Process of
Self-Development' (MIA Records). The trade would be preferable, but if no
one can manage, first $12 gets it.

When i PONGA played a few nights in SEATTLE in early December I shot down
there to see them and the music they were playing before the band went on
was, near as i can describe it, Static Dub. I really can't describe it any
other way and i'm REALLY hoping someone else on list was there (dec 8th i

By the way, I've been lurking for years and i've learned more than i could
have ever learned in any music class I can concieve! Thanks for sharing all

Subject: Wuorinen on Tzadik (was RE: FS/T: Arcturus 'The Sham Mirrors' )
For those who have yet to explore Wuorinen's music, this strikes me as a
pretty good place to start. The disc pairs two slightly older pieces (the
Pulitzer-winning electronic glurble-blurb of 'Time's Encomium,' originally
issued on Nonesuch, and 'New York Notes,' a fine electroacoustic sextet
written in '82 and recorded for Koch in the '90s) with two fairly new
scores, 'Lepton' (a gorgeous nine-minute trio for celeste, harp and piano -
named after one of the composer's cats!) and 'Epithalamium,' a brief piece
for two trumpets. All are expertly played and recorded under the composer's
direct supervision.
Even those who already own previous issues of 'Time's Encomium' or 'New York
Notes' might find it worthwhile to check out the new disc: the remastering,
supervised by Zorn, is the best that these pieces have ever received. The
electronic parts in the latter piece are definitely bumped up a notch in the
mix. "They fucking rock" was Zorn's comment, and I'd have to agree. 'Notes'
is quite the dizzying dance.
Hastened and chastened by Herb Levy ;-), I'm devoting my regular Classical
Score column in Billboard this week to Wuorinen and the new disc. I'll
forward that column to the list when it's out.
Also upcoming from Tzadik, by the way: a new recording of Milton Babbitt's
String Quartet No. 6, paired with an old Nonesuch recording of the String
Quartet No. 2. And for fans of that now-deleted Koch series by the Group for
Contemporary Music that included gobs of Wuorinen as well as important
recordings of works by Sessions, Reynolds, Martino and others, there are
plans underway to have those reissued on a new label as well.

Even though I regret the outcome of the elections, I don't think the
French have any reason to complain, because it is their own fault.
If they had wanted a different result, they should not have stayed
at home en masse, but rather go out and give their votes to their
favorite candidate (Jospin, Arlette...). Like someone said on Dutch
television, this is also democracy.

Hope you tune in to the program.

I was unimpressed. There are some good cuts on the disc, but overall it
doesnt really hold up to their other recordings. The production is
great, some great contributions by danny blume, however I found the
antibalas horn arrangements to be pretty weak. The closest parallel is
to shackman but without the depth.

Sorry itÆs taken me a while to reply to these. I was doing my plane

IÆm not sure about that. They were certainly at the Barbican on the Tokyo
night of the Urban Beats festival last May. I went to the New York night to
see Arto so I didnÆt get to see them.
>Is that album any good?
I like it. It has a very loose, live feel with no overdubs. In fact looking
at the sleeve notes some of it was recorded live. The clarinet, tuba and
cello are complimented by the punkier edge of the guitar and drums. I donÆt
know anything about Japanese street music, but itÆs all mixed in with
Nepalese, Turkish and Balkan influences. The albumÆs about 50% originals
(all written by clarinettist Wataru Ohkuma û itÆs very much his band), 50%
traditional stuff, none of which IÆd ever even heard of before I bought it.
If I have one complaint itÆs that on occasions I find the album a little bit
samey, and if it were any longer the 52 minutes itÆd get boring. If youÆre
in the UK check out Mixing It on Radio 3 on Sunday nights. TheyÆve had the
band in session before and itÆs the most likely place youÆll get to hear
them.

Thanks for pointing this out. I didnÆt know theyÆd put out another record.

Sounds like theyÆre branching out. IÆd love to get it but...students and
money...yÆknow how it is!
>Incidentally they are listed as Cicala Mvta, but that could be a >mistake.
No, the letter æuÆ is a later addition to the alphabet. In Roman times ævÆ
had both a consonant and a vowel reading. FYI from the sleeve notes ôCicala
Mvta is Italian, and is written as the epitaph on the gravestone of the
greatest street singer songwriter of popular music in Japan before the
1920Æs. Soeda Azembo, who at the time around 70 years ago, unable to speak
his mind in fear of being thrown into prison, likened himself to having a
cicada stuck in his throat, a æmute cicadaÆ, the meaning of Cicala Mvta.ö So
now yÆknow!
Dave.

It is my opinion that there is another "democratic" choice involved in
voting--NOT voting.
In short the decision not to vote comes from a feeling that the voting
process is part of an undesirable government, and by not voting one elects to
opt out of this.
And instead of a government that sees this apathy and changes things. The
government appropriates tax funds for advertisements telling people Just
Vote, while they carry on business as usual.
But it is not as dark as that seems, some people have revolution growing out
of the scraps of eros and gunpowder in their speen.
And April Chiracs and Le Pens will bring May revolutions.
