  45.    Don't buy this record.  It's really not worth even
  46. the discounted price.  I'm a big fan of both Fantomas
  47. and the Melvins but the (A) sound quality and (B) the
  48. number of musicians playing make the Monsterwork a
  49. literal mess...  "Mess" is really a good word for it. 
  50. Maybe "soup" would be too. 
  51.   
  52.    I really love Fantomas and the Melvins, so it pains
  53. me to say this but the ablum leaves a lot to be
  54. desired.  It's just dreadful.  ...and disappointing.  
  55.  
  56.    By the way - the Melvins songs on the album are NOT
  57. from the Trilogy they released on Ipecac.  Anyone that
  58. doesn't have "The Maggot" should give it a listen...

  78. I hope everyone will forgive this modest promotional interruption - I'm
  79. hitting the road on Thursday with my group the Blue Noise Band and just
  80. wanted to get the word out to what might be a potentially interested
  81. group of listeners.  We peddle a noisy jazz/whatever/rock stew that
  82. might be vaguely "downtown" if we weren't from, you know, Texas.  It's

  179. I bought the A JOYFUL NOISE video and was really suprized what sun ra had to 
  180. say.  it seemed to me pretty lame and shallow. . .  also his bandmates made 
  181. it look like a sort cult. .. so, is he really like that or is he trying to

  317. depending on what you want to do, there are several pieces of software which 
  318. are really excellent in my opinion and work beautiful on mac...
  319.  
  320. first is max/msp - it's a great graphically set up algorithmic and general 
  321. craziness program.  definitely takes some learning (lots of it) but can serve 
  322. as a great tool if it is capable of producing what you want it to...
  323.  
  324. next in my book would be SuperCollider - sort of loosely based on C / C++, 
  325. object oriented programming language that can generate some of the coolest 
  326. sound and make some of the coolest ambient soundscape business ever, to 
  327. sample or make whole pieces out of, and you can also do tons of other stuff 
  328. like build pieces based on samples and whatnot and process sound, etc. etc.  
  329.  
  330. moving on to sequencer based stuff is where i get a little lost but i love 
  331. ProTools (if you can afford it or hack it or find a hacked copy, it's the 
  332. best ever for assembly) and Cubase isn't too shabby either.

  450. Yeah I too have liked the records with Phew, the 1981 release with CAN,
  451. and Fier's Dreamspeed.  However, Phew released (2 I think, I have one) 
  452. cd as "Novo Tono" on Creativemann a few years ago (maybe 5) and the
  453. Novo Tono stuff was cut-up pop with Phew overlaid here and there. A
  454. couple good tracks but overall not very satisfying.  
  455. Is "Dreams" any better than "Novo Tono"?

  480. Pro Tools version one can download from the manufacturer's site.

  511. a grain of salt, perhaps.  but read that book "Space is the Place" by
  512. Szwed(?) and give a listen to the lecture that accompanied the first edition
  513. of "Live at Soundscape" on DIW, and you get the sense that his ideas were
  514. alot more coherent than you might have originally thought.  and there must
  515. be something to a guy who can keep  amazing musicians (John Gilmore,
  516. Marshall Allen) in his band for 40+ years.

  543. very few solo acoustic tracks, and I'm pretty sure O'Rouke never has.

  638. Depends on what you want to do.  As far as I know, most of the really 
  639. interesting stuff is still OS 9, but much will run in Classic mode on 
  640. OS X.   You may want to look for some of these:

  651. amount for editing (OS 9, works in Classic); it has a number of 
  652. interesting built-in effects.  Track length is limited by available

  656. editing and for saving longer files to disk, as you're not limited by
