  122. 1968,

  127. percussion instruments for music for a dance that had an African
  128. character by Syvilla Fort. But the theater in which she was to dance
  129. had no wings and there was no pit. There was only a small grand piano

  131. wrote twelve-tone music for piano or I wrote percussion music. There
  132. was no room for the instruments. I couldn't find an African twelve
  133. tone row. I finally realized I had to change the piano. I did so by
  134. placing objects between the strings. The piano was transformed into a
  135. percussion orchestra having the loudness, say, of a harpsichord."

  209. Like somebody here has said in another context, it's interesting if 
  210. you're interested in that sort of thing. It's roughly a gothic 
  211. (contemporaneous w/ Lewis' _The Monk_, etc.), set in the country outside 
  212. Philadelphia in the 1760s. It certainly has its moments of 
  213. sensationalism (hell, there's a human spontaneous combustion in the 
  214. first chapter) but it's got its longeurs too. For me, it was fascinating 
  215. to see the generic formulas (as we're used to them in the european 
  216. renditions) warped by an already-formed american weltanschauung (I can't 
  217. really elaborate w/o blowing gags) & the picture of domestic life among 
  218. the propertied colonial classes wa nicely detailed. Some things seemed 
  219. surprisingly Modern, although the 18thC. approach to "honor" got to be 
  220. wearing after awhile, & it's a big part of the plot engine ... I'd 
  221. certainly recommend it to anyone who actually enjoys Hawthorne, but you 
  222. gotta be prepared intermittently comprehensibe motivations, and for that 
  223. early american language.

  226. the related fragment _Memoirs of Carwin the Biloquist_, an abandoned 
  227. "prequel" narrated by _Wieland_'s antagonist.

  248. Altered States is one of my favourite japanese improvised band.
  249. Last year I invite them on Warsaw Summer Jazz Days in Poland and they played
  250. amazing never-forgetting rock-jazz-improv mix. Their live shows are always
  251. 100% improvised but watching on them you think they are playing well trained
  252. scores!
  253. Uchihashi Kazuhisa, Yoshigaki Yasuhiro, Mitsuru Nasuno beside they are great
  254. musicians, they are also very kind, nice and modest people.
  255.  
  256. I love all of their releases, maybe "6" is the one I hear more often than
  257. others.
  258. "Play Standards" is definitely the best start point for all pure jazz-fans.

  532. Varese).  As I'd said, the available versions are good, but I wish the
  533. much warmer premiere recording were available: hearing it on the radio
  534. late at night turned me on to Feldman.

  540. radio, of which I had a cassete. Slower, I think, and it also felt like

  558. There's a live performance of 'Rothko Chapel' coming up on April 13 at St.
  559. Paul's Chapel on the Columbia University campus here in NYC, part of a
  560. weekend trilogy that is itself the middle of a sporadic three-year series
  561. dedicated to Cage, Feldman and the New York School, titled 'When Morty Met
  562. John.' (The title of the series comes from a great anecdote, by the way:
  563. supposedly the two composers first met at a New York Philharmonic concert
  564. which they'd both attended to hear Webern's Symphony; they met in the lobby
  565. when they both fled to avoid hearing a Rachmaninoff concerto.)
  566.  
  567. Earlier the same day, Joan LaBarbara has organized a concert in Carnegie
  568. Hall's Weill Recital Hall featuring Cage's One, Inlets (Improvisation II)
  569. and Music for Nine and Feldman's The King of Denmark, for Franz Kline,
  570. Palais de Mari and The Viola in My Life. The next day in the same hall,
  571. LaBarbara performs Feldman's Three Voices for soprano and tape in the
  572. afternoon. while next door in Issac Stern Hall AT THE SAME TIME (grrr...
  573. it's not part of the same series...) the American Composers Orchestra
  574. includes Cage's Concerto for Prepared Piano and Chamber Orchestra (with
  575. Margaret Leng Tan) on a program with works by Puts, Thorne and Carter.
