  115. Coltrane scholar David Wild that disputed that this
  116. was all "*not* on previous Pablo Coltrane releases".
  117. Also one set of tracks was supposedly recorded in the
  118. U.S. and mislabelled as European dates. [His website,

  120. may have more details.

  122. As for the recording quality, considering they're live
  123. sessions, I'd listen to soem earlier Coltrane Pablo
  124. CDs or LPs to compare. If you like how that sounds ...

  269. I'm posting this to the list in case anyone else is interested.... Amoeba in 
  270. San Francisco (and Berkeley) sells used cassettes -- I have seen plenty of 
  271. old Chadbourne and Zorn (Nonesuch era) tapes. Not sure about those others, 
  272. but it's possible. If anyone wants to make a list I suppose I can check next 
  273. time I'm there. They also have used copies of the out of print Tim Berne JMT 
  274. albums now and then, for reasonable prices ($10-12).

  339. what clips I've seen it looks interesting. I
  340. discovered it from the John Waters Docu "Divine Trash"
  341. where he basically talks about how it inspired his
  342. early works. They show some clips as well as feature a
  343. mini-interview with Smith. Worth checking out.

  552. SBGWW (on Angelica records) always feels like a problematic live recording
  553. to me. Even if you've been to one of those shows (I attended the Groningen
  554. gig), it doesn't give you exactly what you would expect from a big
  555. semi-improvising orchestra led by the composer himself.
  556.  
  557. This double cd set is made up of 5 different sound sources from years of
  558. playing these scores. The title says 10 years, but the actual cd consists of
  559. music dating from 1992 till 1996. Even this reduction resulted in an endless
  560. patchwork of snippets with varying sound quality, and mismatching tonal
  561. colours.
  562.  
  563. Frith's Graphic Scores musically fall between his improv work, and his
  564. compositional/ orchestral projects, making it an interesting title in his
  565. oeuvre. However: recording orchestras requires more than a cassette
  566. recorder, or even an ADAT machine, in order to sound great in your living
  567. room.
  568.  
  569. Solists and improvisers in these big line-up get drowned easily in the
  570. slightly muffled sound. Ofcourse, Chris Cutler and Han Bennink are easy to
  571. pick out on these live sessions: they make sure they are audible, that may
  572. even be part of their percussion style.
  573.  
  574. But buying the record because a young Paolo Angeli, or Daan Vandewalle is
  575. playing on it, might not be the wisest thing: they are not exactly exposed
  576. well.
  577.  
  578. SBGWW is a document, no more, no less, be it with a great booklet including
  579. all of the photographs the musicians used as 'scores'.  I had to pay $50 to
  580. get an imported copy...
  581.  
  582. Still, if Winter&Winter or Tzadik decided to produce a new version, recorded
  583. with a consistent line-up in a beautiful recording space, I would definitely
  584. buy it again. Now I am holding on to my rarely played Angelica-discs.

  604. I would recommend this CD without reservation (if it's the one on Wergo with 
  605. Epei/Dikhthas/Akanthos), 2 instrumental ensemble pieces expertly played by 
  606. the group Spectrum (Barry Guy's on bass for Palimpsest), a piano violin duo 
  607. with Claude Helffer & Irvine Arditti, and a work for soprano voice & 
  608. ensemble. Wonderfully dense, slyly abstract stuff played with fire and 
  609. obvious enthusiasm...

  625. What do you zornlisters think of Broadway and musical theatre in
  626. general?  I just had the displeasure of attending a chorus concert in
  627. which they had some guest singers that specialized in ghastly belting
  628. (they quite ruined "Summertime" for me).  It's not that I don't enjoy
  629. belting (love it when Patton does it), but in show tunes it doesn't do
  630. it for me.  I know lots of people who enjoy show tunes quite a bit and I
  631. have no problem with those people, but I never quite understood them
  632. myself.  It's not a lack of experience, I've listened to countless
  633. recordings and have seen a couple on stage (the least favorite being Les
  634. Miserable).  If some could explain what I'm missing, I would be
  635. appreciative, but if I'm not missing anything that's alright too.

  650. visual stimulus kept my mind off of the storyline and music, I was also

  654. potential agression.

  688. My dilettante approach to Broadway is, now that jazz improvisors tend to
  689. overlook the great new musical songs to improvise over, there's no need for
  690. me to know these contemporary originals anymore. Pop and rock songs might
  691. have taken over this function of  providing a 'meaningful vehicle for deep
  692. soloing over a great tune we all know'.

  694. it is kind of cool to philosophise over how some jazz tenor saxophone player
  695. blows as if he sings you the lyrics through his horn. By knowing the actual
  696. texts as a listener, an extra layer of meaning bubbles up.

  698. when listening to some recent Sonny Rollins cd, I was just lucky to know
  699. Frank Zappa's take on LEILANI, which was so bizarre, I seeked this tune out
  700. to find a Mantovani version, but alas, without lyrics. Rollins is one of
  701. those guys who is capable of completely taking the piss out of a show tune,
  702. and doing something virtuosic and beautiful with it at the same time.

  704. At the moment we don't know the tune, we stop understanding a portion of
  705. what he is trying to say. So, if someone out there knows the lyrics to this
  706. awkward little tune LEILANI, mail me...

  708. That's why I believe it is such a good thing that people like Brad Mehldau,
  709. Yuri Honing, Christof Lauer (and even Frank London) take rock songs into the
  710. jazz world. It is that extra layer of understanding, the unsung lyrics, that
  711. makes playing instrumental verisons of 'songs' so great.
