Efren,
Try to find out whether the Koln Loft Scene has anything going in Cologne.
This is a group of people doing good stuff over there. Frank Gratkowski is
one of them. If you know people who have something to do with the Moers New
Music Festival, contact them: last year, the Moers festival had a special
room (the famous Moers gymnastic classroom) dedicated to the current Cologne
scene, who also put out ltd edition cd's with their latest developments (my
sister bought some last year).
Also try to visit the A-Musik shop (sorry, no address, try the net), these
A-Musik guys lead you the way in their city. Cologne is great for cd-shops,
also modern classical.
For Dutch concerts, Koln might be a good city to approach the following
places:
Maastricht (jazz oriented mostly)
Eindhoven (good place: Wilhelmina, every monday)
Nijmegen (a new really experimental stage that goes by the name of
EXTRAPOOL, try to seek them out on the net)
improvised concerts in the Netherlands can be found at: www.jazzserver.org
Good luck, and good fun

Hi
I saw FNM with Patton a few times in UK, both at festivals and small venues
they were excellent.
Last year, and a few years ago I saw Mr Bungle, again excellent.
Last year and year before I saw Fantomas which were you guessed it
excellent. Patton goes from playing up his rock star image to hating it, to
loving it somehow seamlessly! So I would say go see Tomahawk, especially if
you're a Jesus Lizard fan and/or a FNM/Patton fan. The music is more like
Jesus Lizard than FNM, but any show fronted by Patton is not to be missed
IMHO ;)
For tickets for the Zorn Barbican show go to www.barbican.org.uk I've only
seen Zorn once before live and that was at the Barbican 2 yrs ago. I enjoyed
that show so much I had to buy tickets for this one as soon as they were on
sale :)
It was extra interesting seeing Lombardo drum with Zorn at that date, then
with Fantomas a month or so later. Damn that guy's versatile!
Cheers

I found Tomahawk's live show disappointing. Perhaps something is wrong
with me... I enjoyed the beginning of the concert but became bored
later. The band was tight, Patton's voice was superb as usual, and he
was entertaining all dolled up in his half shirt and make-up. Yet the
performance, like the CD, felt somewhat predictable. After repeated
listenings, a few of the tracks have grown on me -- especially Point and
Click. In my opinion Tomahawk does not compare to Fantomas or Mr.
Bungle.
Nevertheless, I would see Tomahawk again should the opportunity arise. I
skipped the Lovage concert though (probably shouldn't admit this). My
reaction to Tomahawk's show may be due to the spoiled New Yorker
syndrome. I've been fortunate to see Mike Patton's various projects on a
regular basis.=20

Subject: [no-JZ] coltrane live in europe
Can somebody comment on the new or newish Pablo release, Coltrane--'Live
Trane, The European Tours'?! According to the ad I've seen, this is a 7CD
set, Stockholm, Paris, Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart, 1961-63; supposedly ca.
20 tracks [?] *not* on previous Pablo Coltrane releases.
(Has this been discussed before? My memory ...)
So far, I've avoided all this European live material in favor of the
Vanguard box. Should I reconsider?? While I'm a big enough Coltrane
fan to enjoy a couple more versions of 'My Favorite Things,'
'Impressions,' etc., what do we get from these dates--solos, otherwise
unavailable titles, and the like--that's not to be found elsewhere. What
about sound quality--can we hear Garrison and Tyner moderately well? (the
entry on allmusic.com mumbles something about problems on this count)
As always: thanks, Albrecht

Thanks Caleb.
A slightly deeper search found:
Stomu Yamash'ta, percussion virtuoso, Kyoto, Japan
as a judge in the 1998-1999 UNESCO Prize for the Promotion of the Arts
Awards.
Shame, as he is obviously still active, that there has been no distributed
music for so long.
Steve, may be a new project for Cuneiform?

Waterloo Records is a big warehouse type setting for a record store.
Famous for putting everything together and separating genre by colored
dots.

Thirty Three Degrees is a small little shop but is very Zorn list friendly

Unfortunately, Mark Dresser will be coming to Austin with his bass the

Before you go further you should see the material on David Wild's Web site
<home.att.net/~dawild/index.htm> regarding the real origin of the
material on
the box.
The sound varies: Dolphy is not terribly well recorded on any of his
contributions. The rhythm section is muffled on a couple of sessions.
Garrison's humming is prominent on at least one session.
All that aside, there's some great stuff on it, and I think it's
important in
that it captures Trane in transition.
Here's the summary paragraph from a forthcoming review of it:
<<Live Trane captures a man in transition, moving rapidly to reach into
regions where no musician had previously gone. For all it flaws of sub-par
sound and botched cataloguing, this set is represents an essential document
for anyone interested in ColtraneÆs evolution, as well as the shift in jazz
from reliance on the American popular songbook to extended forms of
improvisation.>>
Hope all that helps you with your buying decision.

"The Low End Theory" is their masterpiece- it's the jazziest, and has the
best songs. But don't overlook "people's instinctive travels.....", their
debut- it truly catches them at their freshest, and has some classic songs.
The recently released "Anthology" is a good, comprehensive "greatest hits"
type deal........
But Tribe has some real stinkers in their discog....so beware their
catalogue after "the low end theory..."

i second the 'low end theory'... but my biggest tribe reccomendation has to
be the CD that's been on nonstop play in my car for almost a week now -
'people's instinctive travels and the paths of rhythm'... it's a really
great album, with (mostly) intelligent lyrics, and some silliness so it
doesn't drag you down. the tune 'go ahead in the rain' really rocks out, as
does about 98% of the rest of the album.
