We could look at just about any big-budget pop record and find many technical
merits. They all sound great, as they should ..... check out Bruce
Swedien's work on the latest Michael Jackson ... or better yet the work he
did on Thriller back in '82 or '83 ........

Happy Year of the Horse Everyone,
There will be a six drum game-piece performance of JZ's 'Xu Feng' at
8pm on Feb 24th at Miller Theatre of Columbia University. It is part of a
week's worth of Hong Kong cinema programs presented by CU's East Asian
Institute. More info at: http://sipa.columbia.edu/eai/hkfilm2002/ Susie
Ibarra will be one of the six players, and it's FREE, too!
Now for non-Zorn content:
I will be in Innsbruck, Austria from March 2-10, and would love some
recommendations on good live music in the area/nearby for the time I'm
there. Although Vienna is a trek, I am willing to travel and see the rest of
the country for worthy music. Any assistance in this matter is greatly
appreciated.
Much pleasant wishes,
Pei-Yi

Subject: parker/eskelin on a hot august night
A couple of years ago at the Internet Cafe in NYC, a duet between William
parker and Ellery Eskelin ... a hot August night, the tension was building,
people were pulling icecubes from their drinks and rubbing them on their
necks, so on and so forth. The music was just sooooo sexy. Then they all
went outside and had a smoke. I was AT that gig ! For some reason i wasnt
picking up on
that vibe ..... but thats not surprising. I also have a recording of that
gig.
i was there, too. anything but sexy for me (tho the music was great). for us
uptowners, it was a different sort of night. i left home as the brown-out
began, unwilling to sit home in the dark with no electricity (and not
realizing the subways would be stopped above 125th street). it was so hot in
the internet, but there was nowhere else to escape it.
on the way home, the subway stopped at 125th and i had to take a bus to
187th, except the driver decided to stop at 168th. the whole busload of
seriously unnerved people started yelling at him until he agreed to go the
rest of the way. i got off the bus at my stop, only to realize there were no
lights anywhere -- only police with flashlights on the street, and that only
on broadway. it's not a bad neighborhood, but i was actually scared to walk
the few blocks to my building. i stood in the middle of the street so that
cars would have to slow down (since there was no way to see what car was a
cab), and when one finally came i gave him $6 to drive me 3 blocks (nobody
was picking up fares). when i finally got home, of course, there was no way
to see my way around the apt., much less plug in an electric fan.
helicopters circled all night, shining spotlights down on us. many people
slept outside. it was one of the most intense nights i've had in new york.
and, jody, i would seriously love a copy of that tape.
